Gable Fascia Flashing

This person called to get an estimate to fix the roof leak. the roof was leaking where the fascia board comes in contact with the roof flashing. well lack of roof flashing! Their contractor that did the roof made it leak right after getting done and had been fighting it for a couple years. He eventually said the rain was coming in the soffit vent and there was nothing that he did wrong. Then he quit responding all together. They had water coming in both sides of a dead pocket causing inside damage.

Bleh yeah I see this alot. I repaired a leak on a 4 storey apartment building this year where the original roof installer did the same thing on a dormer. It leaked from the day it was installed, for 15 years. By this point a fair bit of water was getting in to the unit below. All the OSB was totally rotten underneath. It was also in a bad, tight spot so no one could really help me remove and re-install the old plywood, right on the edge of a 4 storey building. It was a tough repair. I like your quick fix with the flashing, I did basically the same thing on the apartments to get them through until the cost of the full repair was approved. It took about 6 months before that happened, during which time no water leaked in to the building, so this is definitely a viable solution if you need a quick way to stop the leak and want to worry about repairing the water damage to the structure later on down the road. If you're like me and you live in an area where it snows, freezes and thaws alot in the winter then just beware that some of the melting snow and ice in the winter time can definitely get behind that flashing, so just be careful about leaving it like that for too long depending on the situation. Is galvanic corrosion ever an issue when nailing aluminum flashing with a galvanized nail? How about with a stainless steel nail? Are aluminum nails available to obviate the issue (if it even IS an issue?)

Hey, I have the same situation going on. I have a gable end just like that the valley is about 30” across with NO cricket. I can imagine the best solution is to add in a cricket with PROPER flashing?

No I'm pretty sure the contractor that put the cricket in did so thinking it would somehow fix the leak, but as you can see, it did not. Either way can be done and shingled properly so it will never leak. In my area, we would call that a "dead valley", in other words, a valley with no slope to it. (I mean what that spot would look like without the cricket). I have seen them done with torch on roofing, steel valley metal and even lead flashing on tile roofs. Personally I think the torch on is the best since everything gets sealed up really nice but metal works fine too, depending on the situation.

What a debacle. The only thing I would say is the homeowner should have had you or another reputable firm out to correct this a long time ago, Perhaps, it got away from them when they thought it had been remedied. What an absolute mess and it would have been easier to do it right the first time versus coming out multiple teams to caulk it.

Thank you, You are right! I do do quite a bit for free because I feel it goes a long way in gaining someone's trust. I'm not going to do a lot that cost a lot in material or time for free though. I did get the job though.

😂 so the flash card didn't go high enough to cover the area it leaks than you caulked the entire bottom of the card so the leaking water going under the card can't escape and the water definitely doesn't follow the dripedge down under all those cobbled repairs

Everything is built so cheap with crappy materials,I also dont like how the shingles are cut flush with the rake edge and possibly water gets down under edges of rake and end of valley metal.

Everyone says great job, but I beg to differ. Yes we know you said its a "freebie" temporary repair, but still it is a sloppy repair done too fast and without actual tools. I seriously doubt this will stop the leak. Any time there are abnormal and overly complicated roof structures, (as in my own house, unfortunately), leaks can develop here there and everywhere, not just in one little corner "fixed" with a 5 inch piece of flashing. If you really do good roof work, I would suggest remaking the video when you are prepared to do a full and proper repair.

I've seen countless so-called "professional" roofers do their work over the years ---- and each and every time their stupidities and shortcuts soon come back to cause even more problems. I tried for more than a year just to HIRE a roofer to fix a leak created by the last company who installed my roof --- and every single so-called "pro" roofer turned down the job. Nobody would even take the job on, at ANY price! The roofing business has a way of employing plenty of addicts and incompetents, and even the well-meaning roofers are almost always incapable of putting in the work to do a job properly. I could go on for hours giving examples, like a new roof we hired where the roofer right away voided the warranty on the shingles by stupidly installing them using "vertical racking". I know ALL about roofing, pal, and I apparently know WAY more than the roofers do. In fact, you have to know more than they do in order to know all the things they are doing wrong. I understand that no contractor likes to be told how to do their job --- but most of them are pretty incompetent and just want to take the homeowner's money, leaving them with all the problems that show up later. There is only one roof that I have ever had done that was done absolutely properly and correctly --- and that was the roof I built all by myself! It is not easy to not have a helper when installing a new roof, but I did it. Please don't bother replying, because I've had quite enough of your ignorance.

The point of this is to show how to make a temporary fix quickly and easily to prepare for upcoming storms, and allow time for approval of an actual repair proposal. He never suggested this is a good long term fix. He's also made it clear to the client this is not a formal repair, but a stop gap.
