Nice video. One suggestion is to consider nail placement on last under shingle at end of the valley. Water will possibly cross over nail head as it goes under last top shingle of valley and reaches end of valley metal. Additional metal might have been used considering it was the reused shingle and nail placement wasn't negotiable

We usually weave the first couple of courses on the bottom of valleys like this video. Especially if the valley slope is that low. Not only is it nearly impossible for them to leak but each side holds the other down when it gets really windy. Its impossible to lift the bottom of a wooven valley without tearing the shingles. After two wooven courses on each side go ahead with your french cut or whatever.

Nice repair job.👍 One item to point out is that the original installer ran the shingle courses to close to the valley. In fact it appears the shingle just starts to curve back up the other roof plain. The shingle courses should not come any closer than about 1.5 to 2 inches from the center of the valley. If too close, the water can be drawn back under the shingles and cause problems. Thanks for the video. 😊
@Lifes_Apprentice
@Lifes_Apprentice 2 жыл бұрын
I do not know why anyone shingles that way and know exactly what you mean. we hold ours around 2inches up from center of valley like you are saying. They ran it 2 inches up the opposite side. they did not nail the shingles too close to valley from what I could tell but that just leaves like 12inches of shingle in the valley loose

Watched your video to learn how to repair a leak on a mobile home coming in through the a/c on the roof. Literally, the brand new roof leaked like an open faucet during our first major storm a day after the installation. Our roofer has been back several times with a can of foam, a 4' metal water diverter and tar all of which have failed. A video on how to work underneath a tight area and this troublesome dead pocket where the air conditioning unit meets the roof would be appreciated. I'm ready to tear it all out because I'm sure he did not use step flashing.
@JR-kk6ce

Great video. I'm not a roofer, but I am old enough to have outlived several shingle roofs. I live in SW, Florida, and the biggest cause of leaks which I have found are in valleys. Specifically, closed valleys, California valleys, and others. The best way to avoid leaks long term is to use an open W valley. As one can see from your video, all sorts of debri, including shingle granules, will accumulate in the closed valley and cause water to back up. A properly done open valley will not and will outlast the shingle roof.

They way things are done depending on where you live. Florida has very different codes then the rest of the us. That valley metal should run the length of the valley and flashing in the dormer below. Seems like that’s all kissing. And they didn’t seal the actual valley. That what you get when you’re not required to have a license.
