PLUS i would say that for gorilla direct look is avoided because in their communication it's a sign of confrontation, so it's an other point to consider why he is not recognising himself. Perfectly! In animals as in Great Apes (Gorillas, Chimpanzees, Bonobos and Orangutans) as in humans, self recognition in a mirror is not innate. An adult human, facing a mirror for the first time in his life, while unaware of its properties and even its existence, would also behave irrationally. It is only the lack of knowledge of the mirror that makes him react in this way. In humans over 2 years of age, after learning in the mirror with their parents, they recognize themselves in their reflection. In the dominant male gorilla, this learning is much more difficult because : - he's not helped by his parents - it does not receive explanations about the reflective properties of the mirror - he hasn't been exposed to mirrors since he was a kid. Head of a family of a dozen members, females and children, this silverback must protect it. Faced with the image of a gorilla he has never seen before (himself), having penetrated his domain to stole some of his females, he has only the idea. *Peaceful, he avoids looking straight into the eyes, sign of invitation to fight between two silberback gorillas (not between blackback gorillas)* , he glances at his reflection out of the corner of his eye. Rears up on his back legs to show his corpulence, by raising clouds of dust, by lateral charges and very powerful and slaps the ground with a large thud, he tries to intimidate and scare off this reflection which, strangely, adopts the same attitudes as his own. Moreover, this stranger disappears when he is no longer in front of the mirror. In my description attached to my video, I explain that behavior in silverback gorillas and the behaviour of other members (blackbacks) of his family. Hit the “show more “ option, I attach a description with more information to each of my 150 videos published on my channel. kzbin.infovideos

Yeah of course, that "other guy" is just as big, strong and threatening as he is, also seems to be able predict and copy his threat display to the t and a fight there in the jungle can cost you your life, sometimes with weeks in agony before death liberate you but also put the females and youngsters in a position without that silver back to protect them. I suspect they avoid direct confrontation for as long as possible, some last resort move.

*The access to my mirrors is totally free and I am not able to reserve the access only to the animals which would have been registered to obtain an access pass , refused to the silverbacks because of their particular behavior explained in the description attached to my video!* If the placement of mirrors in the rainforest may seem sadistic when looking at the images of the reactions of this silverback due to the fact that in gorilla silverbacks looking straight into each other's eyes is a sign of mistrust (eye’s contact in silverback gorillas = fight), behavior totally different among blackback gorillas, I break the monotony of the daily life of some animals in this remote area of the rain forest. They are not imprisoned for life in pens or cages with the distraction of watching visitors standing behind their fences or bars, eating the food they have neither picked nor hunted as Harambe, born in captivity and dead 17 years later, still captive , killed by a bullet in his enclosure. They are not tied as dogs with leashes, locked as dog or cats in flats especially with dressing rooms equipped with a large mirror! Moreover, this stranger disappears when he is no longer in front of the mirror. He don't hate the ground but this intruder in the mirror. As he is a quadruped, his hands and his feet are covered with horn. And finally if, he smacks on the ground with cupped hands (open hands) or with his feet flat and slap on sandy ground then he does't hurt himself. These slaps on the ground must be very loudly because he wants to show his power and thus scare the invader of his domain (their own image) and push him to escape. what's funny is that gorillas are capable of recognizing their reflections like other apes, but the problem is gorillas consider eye contact threatening, so most of the time they just wont examine their reflection long enough to realize it's them.

*In humans over 2 years of age, after learning in the mirror with their parents, they recognize themselves in their reflection. Among gorillas, in the insecurity of the jungle learning at the same time as their parents who have not done this and who do not speak, this is much more difficult even for intelligent individuals. An adult human, facing a mirror for the first time in his life, while unaware of its properties and even its existence, would also behave irrationally. It is only the lack of knowledge of the mirror that makes him react in this way.* The silverback is the colour of the fur on the back of the chief of a gorilla family of a dozen members (his females and offspring) *_Case of a silverback gorilla:_* Faced with the image of a gorilla he has never seen before (himself), having penetrated his domain to stole some of his females, his only goal is to scare this intruder out of his domain. Peaceful, he avoids looking straight into the eyes, sign of invitation to fight in these primates (only between two silverbacks), he glances at his reflection out of the corner of his eye. In bipedal position to show his corpulence, by raising a cloud of dust, by lateral charges and very powerful and loud slaps on the ground, he tries to intimidate and push away this reflection which, strangely, adopts the same attitudes as his own. Moreover, this stranger disappears when he is no longer in front of the mirror. *_Case of a female gorilla_* In front of a mirror, she sees a female she has never seen before, a stranger? (her reflection): A new female for her husband, the silverback (harem chief). Such are the male/female relationships in gorillas. So she doesn't know jealousy and she can quietly stay in front of her reflection, looking her reflection straight in the eye and so, do her apprenticeship in the mirror which will allow her to recognize herself in her reflection. *_Case of gorilla babies_* In front of a mirror they are happy to discover a new playmate who takes pleasure in copying exactly every one of their own moves. They are very inquisitive exactly like in humans. To learn more about these wildlife encounters with giant mirrors installed in the jungle in Gabon, after watching, read the accompanying description of each of my 170 videos published on my KZbin channel kzbin.infovideos

*In apes as in humans, self-recognition in a mirror is not innate. It is the result of mirror training, easier at home for young humans with the help of their parents who have done this training and who have the words to explain to their young child the properties of the mirror.* To do this, one must be exposed to one's reflection many times and examine it quietly: one's face, body and the gestures (attitudes) it copies. *While mirror training can be **_successful in blackback gorillas_** (females, adolescents and children), it is **_compromised among silverbacks_** where looking another silverback, or his own reflection in a mirror, straight in the eyes is a sign of defiance, an attitude that these peaceful males avoid.* *The access to my mirrors is totally free and I am not able to restrict it only to the animals which would have been registered to obtain an access pass , refused to the silverbacks because of their particular behavior explained in the description attached to my video!* With my mirrors I break the monotony of the daily life of some animals in this remote area of the rain forest: They are not imprisoned for life in pens or cages with the distraction of watching visitors standing behind their fences or bars, eating the food they have neither picked nor hunted as Harambe, born in captivity and dead 17 years later, still captive , killed by a bullet in his enclosure. They are not tied as dogs with leashes, locked as dog or cats in flats especially with dressing rooms equipped with a large mirror! Look how happy these young gorillas are in front of these great mirrors! kzbin.info/www/bejne/eWS2gpdnpMSlZpI kzbin.info/www/bejne/hYPFmGacdqplibc Look at how their father's reaction (this silverback), has evolved near the mirrors his family is looking at kzbin.info/www/bejne/hYPFmGacdqplibc?t=155 Please do not forget to read the description attached to each of our 180 videos published on our channel kzbin.infovideos

@XHB06400CANNES2 жыл бұрын
In animals as in humans, self recognition in a mirror is not innate. Head of a group of a dozen members, females and children, this silverback must protect it. Faced with the image of a gorilla he has never seen before (himself), having penetrated his domain to steal some of his females, his only goal is to scare this intruder out of his domain. Peaceful, he avoids looking straight into the eyes, sign of invitation to fight in these primates, he glances at his reflection out of the corner of his eye. Under these conditions, learning to use the mirror is not possible and cannot be successful. Watch my other video and read its description kzbin.info/www/bejne/hYPFmGacdqplibc "Gabonese Gorilla family all have cool reactions to their mirror reflection except for the silverback" The silverback has calmed the displays of aggressions he performed in an attempt to get rid of this intruder (his image) who encroached on his domain. He observes his females and descendants attentively and non aggressively who are glued to the mirror. His gaze passes furtively over his image, but only stops for a brief second. In my description attached to my video, I explain that behavior in silverback gorillas and the behaviour of other members of his family (the blackbacks). Slapping the ground is something powerful on another level of getting slapped😵😵😵

He doesn't realize it but he's paying himself a pretty good compliment if he's that worried about the stud he sees in the mirror and feels the need to get defensive about it.

Not really, since any gorilla seeing themselves in the mirror would perceive a peer threat.

@@attackfighter Not really, since non-silverbacks don't care as much about seeing another black-back in the mirror as a silverback would care if he saw (what he thinks is) another silverback in the mirror. He "knows" the reflection is another silverback, about his size, in about as good shape as he is, and (probably in his own opinion but idk i can't speak gorilla) thinks this guy could take all his wives if he doesn't scare him off. In other words, he's threatened by the stud he sees. Therefore paying himself the aforementioned compliment without realizing it.

*In an attempt to frighten this stranger he has never met (his image), with whom he does not want to share the females of his harem, this silverback, standing in a bipedal position, arms outstretched, shows his large build, his strength with **_heavy loudly slaps with cupped hands_** on the ground. These slaps on the ground must be very noisy because he want to prove his power and thus scare the invader and push him to escape. His reflection taking the same attitude, he hesitates to fight it.* As in humans, self-recognition in gorillas is also the result of learning to look in the mirror. To do this, one must be exposed to one's reflection many times and examine it quietly: one's face, body and the gestures (attitudes) it copies. *While mirror training can be successful in some blackback gorillas (females, adolescents and children),* after a long practice in mirror in laboratory as in wild, it is *compromised among silverbacks* where looking *another silverback* , or its reflection, straight in the eyes is a sign of defiance, an attitude that these peaceful males avoid. *After many years of encountering these mirrors, this silverback has still not learned that a silverback reflection does not present the slightest danger for him.* In my description attached to this video, I explain that behavior in silverback gorillas and the behaviour of other members (blackbacks) of his family. Hit the “show more “ option, I attach a description with more information to each of my 180 videos published on my channel. kzbin.infovideos

*I don't think the adjective "funny" matches this video. Funny = to make people laugh or amuse; humorous.* Rather, it has an educational, scientific character showing that in apes as in humans, self-recognition in a mirror is not innate. This is the result of learning in the mirror, which is easier at home for very young humans in the company of their parents who have already done this learning and who have the ability to speak out to explain to their young child the properties of the mirror. Among chimpanzees or gorillas, in the insecurity of the jungle, learning with parents who have not yet learned and who do not speak is much more difficult even for the most intelligent individuals. After a long apprenticeship in the mirror, some chimpanzees, some blackback gorillas and orangutans performed the mirror test unambiguously, but not always. *_Case of a silverback gorilla:_* Avoiding looking straight into the eyes of his reflection, sign of invitation to fight in these primates (only between two silverbacks), he cannot begin his learning process in the mirror that requires him to observe his own reflection straight into the eyes (an other silverback). *If this learning is compromised among silverbacks it can be successful in blackback gorillas (females, adolescents and children)!* Don’t forget after watching to read the description attached to each of my 180 videos published on my KZbin channel you will know very interesting information about animals reactions front of my mirrors in the jungle kzbin.infovideos

*The silverback has just realised that by not looking this intruder straight into its eyes so as not to challenge it, but only by glancing at it out of the corner of his eye, he has overestimated the distance between them. He is very surprised to discover that this rival is flat, hard and cold! In the description attached to my video, I explain this behavior in silverback gorillas.* By clicking on the "show more" option, I attach a description with more information to each of my 180 videos published on my channel. kzbin.infovideos
