Gagne's Nine Events of Instruction emphasize capturing audience attention, clearly stating objectives in a conversational manner, connecting new knowledge to existing knowledge, presenting content using varied media, providing guidance through scaffolding and mnemonic devices, creating practice opportunities for low-risk skill application, offering immediate feedback on practice, assessing performance to gather data for improvement, and enhancing transfer and retention by mirroring real-world contexts and providing job aids.

One thing I love about learning theory is how it does often connect back to what you already know. This was my experience when I entered higher ed as well. I just kind of went with it but as I did my own professional development I could start putting a name to things I was already doing while adding a few extra skills.

Nice!! Yes, it is great to be able to connect what you’re learning to your past experience (stimulate prior recall! Haha). Getting comfortable talking about your experience and skills in ID terms will help you a ton with the transition.

Are pre-assessments in a course used to gain attention (as per this model)?
@DevlinPeckYT3 жыл бұрын
I don’t think that’s a common approach. Pre-assessments usually help you get data so that you can evaluate the learning effectiveness of your program. Good question though 😃
@paigeholmes15063 жыл бұрын
Devlin, can you apply these to designing microlearning?
@DevlinPeckYT3 жыл бұрын
Hi Paige, I don't see why not! Microlearning has many definitions though, so I may not be the best person to ask about this. Many people I respect in the field view this as a buzzwordy term that doesn't have one clearly agreed upon definition.
@paigeholmes15063 жыл бұрын
@@DevlinPeckYT Yes, I am discovering that definition gets fuzzier all the time. I am working on a project that delivers asynchronous just-in-time learning along with competency-based modules on "soft" skills in the context of the early childhood education profession. We have learning paths for different ECE environments. As a fairly new and overly educated designer, I run into the problem of trying to cram the nine into a tiny module. My strategy is now to stretch the nine out in the learning path. However, we have modules that will be independent of the learning paths. Are there innovative ways to create or examples out there of all nine in a microlearning module?
@DevlinPeckYT3 жыл бұрын
@@paigeholmes1506 Hi Paige, I am not sure! It does seem like it would be tough to fit all of this into a short module. I imagine the assessment could come at the end...maybe grabbing attention and providing practice opportunities would be best for a micro learning campaign like this.

Information Technology and Big Data culture borrowed from learning theory to sell BIG computer solutions and AI, so there is a HUGE cultural gap between these two fields, teaching and Big Data IT, with many of the same words are used and misued causing confusion. People who have worked in heavy big data environments may simply turn off any learning theory graphics simply because they remind them of horseshit marketing graphics for selling big data. I encountered some of these learning theories with my own online research into education while doing graphic design for a technology company, and AT THE SAME TIME was seeing SIMILAR LOOKING "learning theory graphics" coming from the Big Data companies with phrases like "data drives action and turns processing into wisdom", and realized that these are COMPLETELY DIFFERENT WITH A HUGE CULTURAL GAP BETWEEN THEM. You may think that the phrase "using stories" is about a way to explain something, BUT to someone else the same phrase obviously means propaganda and they cna't imagine stories being used in any other way that as a way to trick people. If you don't know about these being cultural different you may make the mistake of arguing with a big data manager about his choice of words. It's simply a matter of two cultures with some words meaning different things and sometimes opposites. There is no similiarty between learning theory proposed by teachers and "informatton processing" theory by big data. People who have seen IT related "learning theory" will read your graphics wrong because they will see the graphic itself as having a meaning that goes beyond the parts, as something that supports this or that type of computer program to solve problems. Someone with experience in cross cultural communication may have more to say on that.
