This thing is 30? *sweats profusely* I found a "working" Game Gear at a thrift shop not long ago. The screen and sound were in rough shape. Luckily, I worked with someone who knew how to do some soldering work. So I bought the components needed and he replaced all of the capacitors. Now it looks as good as it can get on the original hardware. It's nice to have a piece of hardware from my past. Well sort of. I never owned one, but I did get to use one from someone I used to know back then. But hey. Today is what matters and I can proudly say, the one I own is mine. Thanks for your insight as always. Having Phantasy Star on the road was certainly enough reason to buy one... Damn right GTV!! Gun Star Heroes and the first two Sonic games were great and I loved the TV Radio feature. Especially at school... or like you said. Having at home. But by then I was sneaking out to go cruise with my friends. Allso used in school. At study hall. You know, to "study" music, games, etc. Since the teachers usually weren't pressent other than a occasional check-in. Having portable music with your video was a great magnet for certain things in study hall as well. What was that?? The girls wanted to catch a certain show during school?? I happened to have it. Gather around ladies. Let me help you out a bit. But you got to get reeaall close... oh, sorry. Just stretching. ;) It also made Detention fly by much faster using a book to an old outdated school book. So I cut out just the right amount to put the Game Gear inside. The book was labled Physical Science. Very appropriate I thought. By the way, I'm still waiting for my light novel to become an Anime. "Manly Delilnquent 1/3 trying to pick up Delinquent Girls with my desk transporting me to Another World!" The desk becomes a Testarossa, my Leather Jacket is endowed with the power of countless Karate Masters, Samurai, and Ninjas!! My car also transforms into a mecha called Macross! You got your Anime Girls with the typical school-girl uniform excpet super long skirtsl one uses a Metal Yo-Yo', another has a Rocket Launcher... they are the Muddy Pair!! And my girlfirend Limu wears a tiger bikini and flies through the air with lightning powers but she has cat ears instead of horns... and there's this thing about if someone throws hot water on me, I turn into a girl, warm water its a cat, and cold water transforms me back. So that's where the 1/3 part... oh, (cough) sorry. What were we talking about?? ;) (Ahem) That ring a bell for anyone? Can anyone name those actual Anime parodies? Sorry... just trying to get the longest/most comment award on GTV one of these days. =) Also my friend from Japan had one so we would switch one back and forth with each other so I could play the RPG's. I only got caught once and they wanted me to explain why I was playing the "Satanic"" Mortal Kombat at a private, religious school... I had to be the smart-ass of course. Told them my Demon Familiar ordered me to do it!! It did NOT go over well but enough to laugh and tell a story about it. My dad would come in with a serious expression but a bit of a smirk. Like, what did you say THIS TIME?? ;) By the way, the best radio was 69.2, the frequency for Magical Sound Shower. Best damn sound for the best damn racing game of the 20th Century hands Down - OutRun!! Picked it up in the background around 6:07... that song brings back so many memories. I loved it and still do!! That's what reminded me of the story. I do have someone drawing it that's much better than me. Right now, its just a silly story. As usual, another great upload and video from my favorite KZbin Channell and all-around awesome dude. You never cease to impress and this stuff sure brings back Nolstagia in a bitter-sweet way. Awesome stuff GTV!! Thank you for your hard work as always. Its like you bring Japan and parts of the past back to the present. And its awesome how you do it and the detail you put inot it. Honestly, they really didn't need to enhance the color palette of the Game Gear. For a portable system the SMS color palette would have been perfectly fine. I honestly wish they had just used identical hardware inside the GG because then we would be able to play direct ports of GG games on our SMS systems today without too much trouble. Although I suppose we would still have the resolution issues that most GG to SMS conversions have these days, with the garbled mess being shown along the outer borders of the screen. This should honestly be masked off in code for these ports so that it ends up just being black borders or something of that nature.

on the master gear, it was a little glitchy, maybe the cart size was just too big, or they decided it wasnt worth the expense. who know but it sucks all way round
@skins4thewin3 жыл бұрын
@@GTV-Japan Well that's cus the resolution is different. The GG can't properly display all the lines, same with any SMS game being played on the GG. Or is the game buggy in some other way? I don't think I ever tried Phantasy Star on the GG via an adapter. But they could have ported it just like they did so many other SMS games by simply reducing the viewable screen area. Shouldn't have been that hard & I imagine it would have been a popular title in Japan at least. Probably wouldn't have gotten it here in the states but at least we would have a Fan Translation of it by now & a great GG version of the game to play.

I have so many memories of my game gear. Of course shortly after getting it we got the AC and car adapter because that thing destroys batteries. Car adapter was great for when we went on an 8 hour road trip to Florida. Got Sonic 2 with mine, but got more games like super columns, Ecco the Dolphin, Sonic Triple Trouble (my favorite) and Caesar's Palace. Later when I was a teenager my mom picked up a bunch more games for cheap on clearance including Sonic Chaos and Super Battle Tank so I had a chance to go back and enjoy the old handheld in a fresh way.

@@GTV-Japan I actually got a Game Gear as my first handheld. I was a big fan of the Sonic cartoon (the bad one. I was a little kid) and saw another kid playing what I later would learn was Sonic Chaos on a Game Gear and of course I was super interested. My parents actually got me a Game Gear shortly after because it was one of the first things I showed a genuine interest in. I loved it and had so many fun times. I even finished Ecco The Dolphin, which just like the Genesis game ends with an unfair autoscroller where taking the wrong path leads to death, and the nightmare inducing Vortex Queen. A few years later my older brother got his hands on an old brick Game Boy and some games, and what it lacked in graphics it more than made up for with games. Metroid 2, Tetris, Final Fantasy Legend 2 (I know it's actually a SaGa game), Wario Land, and later, Pokémon! I forgot about the Game Gear until I was a teenager and my mom brought home a bunch of Game Gear games she found on clearance in a shop when I was around 13-14

Not that the Mirco ones aren't cool in their own right, but just looking at them gives my hands cramps. I only played Game Gear a few times, but if there is one thing I'd say that makes the GG superior to the Gameboy, it's that the design was clearly designed for a more comfortable gaming experience. The Gameboy had your hands in close quarters, folding them over each other on the back. The GG was designed to be similar in size to a game controller.

Awesome video! The Majesco Game Gear I heard has a slightly better screen, but the modding community for the game gear is really great if people ever want to venture into installing a modern screen on it. I nearly picked up a $30 game gear at a thrift store years ago but I wasnt sure if it worked so I passed on it. It's one of those libraries I didn't play as I kid but I look forward to diving into it in the future. I seen this picture with a size comparison of the Game Gear Micro next to a dreamcast vmu, and it's smaller than even at that! Even with the magnifier the game gear micro is a very niche product. Sega really dropped the ball on that one.

It always made me sad that there wasn't ever a Super Game Boy equivalent for the Genesis. There's even a perfect name: Mega Gear! Also, fun side note, the Game Gear's backlight is actually provided by a florescent bulb, and lot of mods for the system remove it and the screen and replace it with a modern LCD screen, and it usually gets over 12 hours of battery life!

Slight correction on the resolution. The Game Gear’s screen works more like a crt than a more traditional lcd. This way, it is capable of higher resolutions so sms games aren’t squashed. In fact, some game gear games are quite literally master system ROMs on a game gear cartridge.

The idea that Sega was gonna buy someone else's hardware, including portable hardware was something that would have been a mistake since Sega headquarters in Japan had their own hardware engineers and this is something that keeps getting underestimated by even the professional gamer journalists. The NES was nothing but portable FamiCom/NES hardware with battery saving limitations and a black and white screen decision... NEC's PC Engine Express was a posh high end electronics and 1987 cutting edge tech in the palm of your hands but obviously it was not a Nintendo device... and the customer was able to stay being fooled in that prices was informative when it was not... you were getting what you paid for... the only thing with GG is that the screen aspect ratio and resolution could have been solved to match the NEC but who knows... additional engineering and possible higher prices that would go down if unit sales reach one million plus in a years time or less.

I m still waiting on retro bits rerelease of the Sega Nomad they made several adapters for the RDP2 so I m hoping for a Master System and Game Gear adapter i thought about getting one of the gamegear minis but they are just not enough for me to go through the trouble of importing one I would probally get the Blue version since it comes with gunstar heroes and sonic chaos(sonic and tails)

Same here. Especially when the new will wear off and you might find it discounted later. A thinner ps vita like machine with the same GG shape and 50 games built in woulda been better I say.

Game Gear was always a weird platform in that it was doing Master System games but with different resolution and things added or taken away? I'm a Sega fan but I've never really seen the pros of GG because the cons are very obvious at times. It's a nightmare to collect for as well so I've stayed well clear! I also thought Sega selling the micro was a bad idea. I mean unless you're a toddler you're not going to be able to play the thing! 😆 Anyway good video. 👍

Fun Fact: Once upon a time Nintendo wanted to make a portable system (GameBoy). They had a deal with Citizen to make the screen (the Game N' Watch previously used Sharp screens). But Nintendo for some reason decided to go with Sharp. Yoshihiro Taki from Gunpei Yokoi's team was tasked to bring the bad news to Citizen. To do so, he decided to make a new (fake) set of specs for a colored portable screen, sent it to Citizen and told them the mono screen will be done by Sharp. While Citizen the colored one at a later date. Then ghosted them. LOL Years later the Game Gear was launched by Sega. Surprise, surprise, Citizen manufactured the LCD screen. According to accounts of Yoshihiro Taki, he disassembled one and found the device suspiciously similar to the fake design he gave Citizen. Which their contact at Citize denied. LOL (Source: Yoshihiro Taki interview by Florent Gorges

@GTV-Japan What's even funnier is Yoshihiro Taki knew the fake machine he made was not feasible, given that it's a battery drain and expensive.. 2 complaints always associated with the original Game Gear. In comparison, then Nintendo president Hiroshi Yamauchi mandated the portable machine to be within ¥10k ($72 in 1987). Yoshihiro Take kept a professional diary where he took notes of his daily activities with Nintendo, meetings and with whom. Even a lot of technical data.

Are you sure that the Majesco Game Gear sold for only 30 bucks?? That seems impossible! I don't know how they could have possibly sold it that cheap, without the system having some MAJOR drawbacks compared to the original, which as far as I know it doesn't. Heck, from what I understand the screen is actually slightly better on those units!
@GTV-Japan3 жыл бұрын
It was! Maybe they had unsold units and didn’t have to build any. Who knows!?

Hey I wanted to let you know I heard an old old interview where some guys from Atari were talking about the 80s90s and they mentioned that even in 1991 the game gear made a $15 profit on each unit. Some kind of cheap screen or something. It really made jack tramiel mad and he’s walk around the office grumbling about it. So maybe the GG was cheap to make Even when it was new. So maybe it was next to nothing to remake in 2000
@skins4thewin3 жыл бұрын
@@GTV-Japan Lol damn.... Maybe you were right then.. i still haven't heard anything about it only costing 30 bucks tho. I am thinking that price may be what it sold at before it was finally removed from shelves, aka the heavily discounted price that happens to unsuccessful consoles. I do not believe for a second that it was sold for 30 bucks when the system was first reintroduced. There is just no way. Lol it does make you wonder just how much they were making off the Gameboy as well, and how little they must have been making off the Lynx. And I guess electronics being manufactured for next to nothing overseas is nothing new.
@GTV-Japan3 жыл бұрын
That’s possible. Also the lynx had a weird special screen so it probably cost more

@@GTV-Japan Would bet money on that being the case. Sort of like how the Nomad and Virtual Boy both got all the way down to 50 bucks before they were done. I ended up buying both of those systems at that price. Would have never bought them at full price but when I saw them for that cheap I thought hell why not? I didn't know that about the Lynx tho, what was special about it's screen that made it cost more?

I know this is blasphemy for gamers, but growing up i had a gameboy and enjoyed it. But always thought it was severely overrated. When i played GG i actually felt the fun i had when i would play a home console. When the gameboy color came out i thought maybe now it would surrpass the GG in my eyes, but i was also dissapointed, in that it was just a GB with with a mediocre color pallet. It wasnt until GB Advance where i felt nintendo finally created a worthy handheld like the GG. Point is i loved GG, i played it and enjoyed significantly more than GB and GB color. I always argue that nintendo handhelds although nice n fun have also been overrated compared to other companies handhelds which in my opinion were significantly better than what nintendo were doing at the time.
@GTV-Japan3 жыл бұрын
I don't think its blasphemous! Any other company besides selfish stubborn Nintendo would have seen to release a color upgrade as soon as the game gear took off. of course there was the lynx two but 2 (actually 3) color competitors? it was crazy. I had a gameboy too but by 91 i was totally done with it, except for FF legend games. I thought the early batch of Nintendo made games, Tetris, Alleyway etc were ok, but Castlevania, TMNT and a few others were not very good. And i would read the gossip section of EGM in 93 94 95 96 and they always kept touting a color game boy around the corner, only for it to not happen. well it did in 1998?! Good Lord! People only keep defending Nintendo for one reason. The myth that they "Saved the gaming industry" combined with the fact that they are the longest running hardware manufacturer, this streak, legacy, what have you HAS to continue uninterrupted and be blindly defended at all costs. At least that is how I see it! Thanks for sharing your opinion!

@@GTV-Japan Yes i understand your point, and agree. Although i still like nintendo, because im a fan of art and videogames. Growing up n still now i owned and played nintendo products, however i was never blind to how their competitor's handhelds were just as good if not better than nintendos. Like i mentioned, i always had significantly more fun and impressed by the GG when compared to gameboy. Same with neo geo pocket color. It was imo a handheld that blew gameboy color out the water and could compete imo with the great gb advance,given more chance and time. Seriously, i would see and play neo geo pocket color n GG games and be hyped and impressed, and then see all the pokemon games that were so popular for GB n GB color n thinking how underwhelming they were compared to the other handhelds. Same again for PSP and DS, DS was great but PSP was amazing, and i would even say same with Vita and Switch. Switch is a great hybrid, but the vita imo was just as amazing and a better handheld, given the smooth controls and dpad, while switch has more gimmicky controls. Thank you for responding and your content!

@@GTV-Japan Yes indeed! But what I find amusing is that it's clearly targeted only for market Japanese market, but most people outside of the target market end up importing them and end up being disappointed as you can see in many reviews here on KZbin. Don't know if what I worded makes sense to you but you get what I mean right? It's like people getting mad over game franchises turning into Pachinko/Pachislot, but this has not only already been done since forever and people complaining about it are not even the target demographic meaning they will likely never deal with the actual product itself.
