Once again good Sir kudos for the awesome video. I was on a work trip away from home and this and a few other of your videos kept me entertained and helped to avoid feeling homesick. I cannot thank you enough for the amazing content. As for my favourite SG-1000 game, I never really had a chance to play this growing up. I did however know someone who had a power base converter for their Genesis and recall playing James Pond. Not sure if that was an early enough title for the SG-1000 but all I can recall. This video also made me notice the "Sega" chant that I thought was from the opening to Sonic actually came from the early commercials. That is so cool to learn. Keep up the amazing work my friend!

It's interesting how you embarked on this look at Japanese video game consoles at the exact same time as my good friend Alex Smith at the They Create Worlds podcast did! I've been showing him the videos as they come out. We did get a little boost in information because an oral history interview with Hideki Sato, the man behind a lot of Sega hardware, came out very recently. If you're interested I can give you a link. It's all in Japanese but we went about translating it, Google style. 1:15 Sega was actually *the* most prolific manufacturer of arcade video games through the 70s and 80s, period. Between it's Japan operation, Gremlin, and licensing they completely beat everybody else. 1:26 EE-PAW-KUH 2:35 Not exactly. The hardware was a computer. A home computer with game playing capability, but that was no different than the Commodore 64. So the SC-3000 was the original machine, the SG-1000 was the spin-off. 4:03 Actually Sega didn't really have a strong brand recognition. They may have been a large arcade force, but they never had any hits on the level of Namco or Taito. On the consumer end they had nothing and that's what made the biggest difference in the early days. 9:42 "How could that be a failure?" Cuz they lost a ton of money and consumer confidence by doing it :P

In japan in those days it was very common to upgrade electronics constantly. Employees would receive huge bonuses 2-3 times a year and go shopping. Here's what is very intriguing too me and I don't quite understand. So, the Mark 1-Master System use the exact same Z-80 Zilog processor at 3.5 mhz why was the Nes considered a more powerful console (too the Mark 1 and 2). Was it video RAM or efficiency...could it be the MMC chips?

I think it's safe to say that these games were perfectly fine in 1983 but they would look outdated shortly after. The hardware is designed around fixed screen games and any sidescrolling action seems to exceed the system capabilities.

I want to ask. Was it all coincidental, or did Sega/Nintendo move their launch date to compete with the other?
@GTV-Japan
@GTV-Japan 6 жыл бұрын
Honestly no idea! Some sources say July 15 can’t actually be confirmed but a lot of advertising says so. I looked back at Nintendo ads from 1983 and the fine print will have dates that change. For example early ones say “summer 1983” and then “July 1983” then “early July” etc as releases got closer. Sega didn’t put dates on their ads or promo materials. Unofficially I’d say coincidence because if it was planned way ahead why not move it up one week to get a leg up? It’s a great point. Thanks for bringing it up!

I actually remember emulating the Sega SG-1000 on my MacBook Pro in the early to mid 2010s via OpenEmu. It supports Sega SG-1000 games, and I thought they were all absolutely charming! My favorite game on the system has GOT to be a 4-way-tie between Congo Bongo, Pitfall II: The Lost Caverns, Zoom and especially The Castle (also is it JUST me, or does Orguss remind me of Trans-Bot on the Master System? The foes in Chaco N’ Pop look like the ones from Bubble Bobble, too)! The SG-1000’s legacy DOES live on! They are being re-released on the ColecoVision through AtariAge.com... more specifically: the Super Game Expansion Module-which finally resurfaced decades after the 1983 Video Game Crash ruined THOSE plans-allows BOTH MSX & SG-1000 games to be playable for cheaper prices (and BELIEVE ME, finding an SG-1000 ain’t easy. When compared to the Famicom, they’re as rare as hen’s teeth)! All in all, I don’t think the SG-1000 is a failure. Sure it’s not graphically capable when compared to the Famicom, but as Sega’s first game system, I think they did GOOD! One last thing: I wonder IF Hulk Hogan has a “Dragon Wang” in his manga adaptation...

Eventually that model of releasing basically all new consoles year after year screwed Sega over in the long run. Sega is for all intents and purposes out of the main console hardware business while Nintendo still sits strong, and I'd say its business model of releasing a system then kinda screwing over its loyal customers by almost immediately moving onto the next new thing, leaving the current console owners left wanting or maybe having to buy an expensive new console again, was a major, major contributor to this. So, yeah, Sega's business model was definitely flawed then imo and it would still be a terribly flawed model now too. Hopefully all the modern console manufacturers are aware of this.

Doubt that had much, if anything, to do with it. Nintendo relesead way more revisions (semi-incompatible ones even) than SEGA did. The thing is, in their different ways both Nintendo and SEGA gave up against the new players.

Wow, one hour. I always wondered what the difference between the sg-1000 mark III and the master system was, then I'd look it up... But now I've forgotten again. The master system is that home console I find interesting (better specs than the NES), and that I wish I liked, but for the life of me I just don't find the games available for it to be particularly good. Sorry europeans, I'm sticking to that NES you hate so much and bash like crazy.

Oh yeah. There was this british youtuber who started every video by showing his consoles and as he brought up an NES, he proceeded to drop it in a trash bin... I mean it was a joke, but yeah, they resent the NES. I think maybe it was the nostalgia nerd, but I'm not sure who it was. I also keep seeing thumbnails for videos that go "7 times the MASTAH SYSTEM SHIETED ON THE NES", with a very graphic thumbnail of the console taking a dump on an NES. In America, Latin America and japan the console is super loved, glorified, while their top player the master system is damn nearly ignored, I can sort of see why they would dislike it.

Not a failure itself, the company was because they felt they needed to keep dumping hardware for small revisions or add-ons that divided and cut their market time and again eventually outside of die hard fans causing company/brand name animosity that hammered them so far into debt they put themselves out of the hardware business. But in the end the legacy of that system went beyond Sega borders, the hardware brains at least, as a modified version of the z80 (z80a) was the heart of Gameboy, which got x2 beefed up in the Color, and then as a co-processor in the GBA line which like Sega kept old games ticking for over 20 years.
