@Maria-mk3sf4 жыл бұрын
@@user-DullardBones You're right about that. Even my culture has a shapeshifter. His story is very interesting though he is not as much of a scheming trickster as some others. He's called Boto where I'm from and he's a pink river dolphin. Sounds weird but it's a real animal believe it or not. You can search it up if you need to. Legend says that he's a dolphin by day and a handsome man by night. He goes on escapades near the river where he lives, and seduces one woman per night. However, if the woman gets pregnant her child will be a boy, and turn into a dolphin once he is a year old. Since the child is unable to live properly on land he must live in the river with his father, and the woman has to part with the child. But don't worry, the legends also say that Boto is a caring father and respectable man so no need to worry about the dolphin kids. They are not forced to stay away from their moms per say... They just have to stay apart from them for half the day because in their dolphin forms they lose memory of their mom, and in human form they lose memory of their dad, Boto.

The kanji 三 in 団三郎 is read “zabu”. Also seen in 九九 (multiplication table) where “3 × 6 = 18” is recited as “saburoku jūhachi” (三六 十八). Probably it has to do with the fact that, if I recall correctly, the character’s older Chinese reading was something like “sam”, which explains why it can branch out and evolve into “san” and “sab(u)” at the same time. Perhaps the trailing “r” caused the reading alteration to avoid n-r consonant sequence? (I’m just guessing as a Japanese linguistics major.)

I mean, in Pathfinder you could talk to your master about using the race creation rules to create a tanuki race. Alternatively reskinning the kitsune may not be a bad idea, and if you are playing Pathfinder 2e, well.... Kitsune are one of the core races in Tian Xia and a very popular race in 1e so it will probably come back and then you could reskin it (or adapt a gnome, Pathfinder gnomes do have a similar flavor as good ilusionists after all).

@@unfortunatewitnessX Pathfinder player means that he plays Pathfinder and not D&D, Pathfinder 1e was basically a reworked and/or rebalanced version of 3.5 D&D that discarded prestige classes in favor of arquetypes or "alternative class feathures but in a package" over time and that in its 2e reworked combat completely and nerfed casting a lot in favor of having feat-focused characters.

Thanks to this I have several questions about another video game Tanuki: Mamizou Futatsuiwa, from Touhou Ten Desires. I mean, she and Ran Yakumo (a Kitsune btw) have this kind of relationship but, if the Kitsune was called Futatsuiwa, why does she, a Tanuki, have a Kitsune's surname as her own? And she said her power was Top 3 above all Tanuki? I think you should check that franchise, it has Japanese myths and legends everywhere, but play it under your own risk! It's genre isn't called "bullet hell" for nothing.

I think that brief clip from The Sword in the Stone, to illustrate the centuries old "transforming competition" (among other battles) between the tanuki and kitsune, was the first Disney animation visual reference I have seen Gaijin use in the 5+ years I've been subbed to the channel. When my sister was watching this video, saying it was between Tom Nook and a fox, I knew there was going to be yokai battle going on between two of the more famous yokai covered in this series; I just didn't know that they shared a common ancestor from China (appearance) and a common linguistic ancestry ('mujina' from the Nihon Shogi). You learn more every time you tune in. Thanks Gaijin... I mean GimGam. lol

Don't worry about Danzaburou's pronunciation, it's a little confusing, but I'll try to explain it a little here for those curious: In Japanese, the character 三 which means "three", can be read as "mi", most commonly in terms like 三つ "mittsu", three (of something), or 三日 "mikka", third day/three days. This is a purely Japanese reading. The other most common reading is "san", which comes from Chinese. This is often heard even as the number three when counting. The reading "sabu" comes from a modification of the original Chinese pronunciation of "san", which was anciently "sam" (and still is in Korean). The Japanese adapted this "samu" as "sabu" (the same happens, for example, for 木, which can be "moku" or "boku"). You can hear it in the proper name 三郎 "saburou". Lastly, because it's in the middle of the word, the "s" can sometimes become a "muddied sound", i.e. a "z" as in 団三郎 Danzaburоu.
