Galaxy Quest has always been, and will always be, the best Star Trek movie ever made.

It's quick, but on the alien planet when Jason is giving everyone jobs to get the sphere, he says "Fleegman, you set up a perimeter". It makes me think this was the inspiration for what he would do in the reboot. Also, I kinda think that isn't Guy's real last name. Jason made it up and Guy used it as a stage name. Maybe it was just a fluke in editing, but it always stood out to me. Another great payoff is the Guy-is-going-to-die joke. When Sarris is shooting everyone on the bridge, Guy just stands there screaming and is the only one not shot. Your guys love of movies is a delight, so to see a full podcast on one of my all time favorite movies made my day. Never Give Up! Never Surrender Dudes!

I never thought about it before but hearing you gys discuss the characters arcs but this actually ties into Leonard Nimoy (Actor who played Spock). His 2 biographies were titled I Am Not Spock and then later I Am Spock. And that sort of ties into both characters, the captain needing himself and others to realise he's not that person but also with Alan Rickman making peace with the fact you are that character in many people's eyes and thats not a bad thing

As I'm approaching 40 (ugh), I'm also finding myself tearing up more, even watching movies that I've seen 50x where there haven't been tears before

40 wasn't actually that bad, but for some reason 41 was the real kick in the teeth...

If there's one word that describes this movie, it is SINCERITY.

Please can you guys react to the making of Galaxy Quest documentary? It's such a gorgeous tribute and only deepens one's affection for the movie. Plus (of course), we would love to feed off of the joy of you both experiencing it for the first time.

I'd say the parallel for Alexander Dane/Dr. Lazarus (Alan Rickman) would be Leonard Nimoy and Spock. Spock's famous line of "Live Long and Prosper" and the hand gesture that goes with it would be the direct inspiration for " By Grabthar's hammer, by the suns of Worvan, you shall be avenged"... And Leonard Nimoy also famously wanted to move on from the character and have Spock die. Spock dying was a condition he set for taking part in Star Trek II the Wrath of Khan... (spoilers I guess) And he was surprised by the morning and heartache and just how affected the fans were by it. He had the realization IRL that Alan Rickman's character has in Galaxy Quest.

Its so fun listening to you guys, love these deep dives into movies that changed all of us. I wanted to say that I love that you guys highlight Enrico Colantoni in this because when I saw this for the first time I knew him from the Canadian tv show Flashpoint where he is my favorite character and he acts the crap out in that show. I just love his performances. And also hearing how he got the part is also so fun and how he is in interviews... I dunno, its just something about him thats what I can only describe as the meme of dicaprio pointing. For me personally that is. And I love the Saren jokes xD if there is something that I am a die hard fan of it is Mass Effect. Sure I am SW fan and LotR fan having a bunch of statues and lightsabers and the one ring around my neck for over 15 years. But if its something that I cant stop talking about and to this day discuss on forums and cant wait for N7 day and VA doing yet another reunion it is Mass Effect. But anyways, great episode guys! I really hope this channel grows more because your talks are so genuine and its a joy to listen to.

I think one of the reasons the aliens work is because they're _also_ the fandom. Like, they believe sincerely in the ideals, the trappings, the whole shebang. I think it's why Mathesar's triumph at the end works so well, because the happy glee in his face when he says the tagline is pure fan joy - it's how a Trek fan would look if Leonard Nimoy himself personally said "Live long and prosper" to them complete with Vulcan salute.

Tech Sgt. Chen is stoned. They didn’t remove it from the movie. Just because they didn’t show him blazing a joint doesn’t mean he is stoned out of his mind. He is constantly eating he clearly has the munchies from being high as a kite. He is delayed in the transport scene because he is trying to get food from a vending machine, on the shuttle down to the planet to get the barillium spheres he has a bag of popcorn. While he is still a weird guy, he is a stoned weird guy.

Yeah, the big background gag is that in the 80's when they shot the original show he was high on cocaine, but now he smokes the happy grass instead. 😁

30:53 - “Oh, this is basically Harrison Ford.” No doubt Trekkies took pains to point this out during your initial reaction, but this was also Leonard Nimoy during the 70s and 80s, going so far as to title his first autobiography “I Am Not Spock”. (His second autobiography was titled “I Am Spock”, a reflection of his acceptance of what he meant to his fans, just as Alan Rickman’s character learns in this movie.) Similarly, Tim Allen’s character was largely based on William Shatner’s famous egocentrism/narcissism (unfortunately, by most accounts, he never evolved via growth and self-reflection like his counterpart in the film).

I recommend Strange New Worlds 2 seasons so far and is set a decade before the original series and is very good.

Does anyone know if the original cut of Galaxy Quest is out there somewhere? I'm not sure if it was R-rated or PG-13, but I definitely remember seeing this movie on PPV in 1999 or 2000, and Sigourny Weaver definitely said "Well FUCK that!" when in every current version I've seen it's clearly dubbed over to say "screw that." I don't remember any other specific lines or jokes that were cut out, but I think there might have been a sex joke or two that were cut out to get a PG rating.

Alan rickman almost quit the role of snape, he didn’t like playing the villain for so long until jk Rowling told him what snape does in future books and that Snape is actually the hero, he liked it so much he stayed, he never told anyone about it as it was a secret and probably didn’t want to spoil the surprise for anyone
