Y'all severely underrate The Undiscovered Country. Probably the greatest finish to a series ever. First Contact is a little overrated: time travel as a gimmick when it should've been an all out war. Search For Spock is a great movie too. Stealing the Enterprise and the entire last act are all epic.

There isn’t enough data to properly rank it, but I would be curious to see where Star Trek: The Motion Picture: The Director’s Edition (Presented in 4K) lands on the list. I think it is on par with the other films good films (if not better). The theatrical cut of the film is essentially a rough cut: Paramount would not allow the director Robert Wise to polish the film after the premiere (post production was extremely rushed) and the firsts cut was delivered the same day as the premiere) because the studio felt the press would ravage the film as a mess if it were fixed after the first showing (hurting the opening weekend box office). Now that the film is officially finished, I would saying it is a very solid picture. Alternatively, the changes between the director’s cuts of The Wrath of Khan and The Undiscovered Country are much smaller, and like most director’s cuts the editing is not as tight, but there are more character moments, so it really depends on what the viewer wants. Personally, I would rank TOS films as follows: 7. The Final Frontier 6. The Motion Picture (Theatrical Cut) 5. The Search for Spock 4. The Voyage Home 3. The Motion Picture (Director’s Edition) 2. The Undiscovered Country 1. The Wrath of Khan

For anyone old enough to have experienced it in theaters in 1979, the Motion Picture was epic in every sense. I remember well; the audience was shocked. We went from plywood sets, aliens basically wearing Halloween costumes, plastic ships on strings, and painted backgrounds to a complete overhaul of every aspect and detail. Better soundtrack, amazing effects, incredible bridge, best warp core version ever. Is it perfect? No. But this was an unimaginable achievement and the only reason any future movies could exist.

Top 5 for me: 1) ST VI 2) ST II 3) First Contact 4) ST III 5) ST IV Damn, I mean ST III Search for Spock did need some editing here and there, but #7, IDK. Definitely have a relook of ST III, LT. Commander Uhuru even gets a chance to do something different here. Even though it's limited, she takes over the transporter station at the starbase and gets our crew on board the Enterprise. The Escape sequence can not be matched, in my opinion; think of it as a space opera for you when you are backing up your car out of a driveway. But it's done so much better. They should have flushed Capt. Kruge's character is out a bit better; maybe adding the part where he steals the bird of prey from the Romulans (non-cannon reference). JJ Abraham Trek doesn't come close, let alone beat out this movie, which you can still watch and be thrilled to watch it. How is ST VI towards the bottom of the list? It's one of the best send-offs I've ever seen.

So many people I know have dunked on Voyage Home for decades. When First Contact was named at third, I did a bit of a fist pump because that meant Voyage Home was considered the second best ST movie ever across the board.

Regarding TNG movies… I feel like a plot similar to Yesterday’s Enterprise or All Good Things would have been better over what they chose for Generations. An age old question who is better, Kirk or Picard, why not do that? I don’t mean in a adversarial manner but rather an anti nostalgia and differing in command style sort of way. Kirk is much more the Chaotic Good while Picard is Lawful Good. Have the Enterprise B (Kirk and whoever else is onboard at the time) crew travel to the Enterprise D era through a time anomaly. Picard greets the Enterprise B crew and is revelatory to Kirk, but then a crisis occurs and the two Enterprises have to deal with it. The crisis leads to strife between the two iconic captains, which is where the real conflict of the film happens. Perhaps Kirk violates the Prime Directive, Kirk disregard Picard’s protest, which leads to a skirmish between the Enterprise B and Enterprise D. The two captains then have to make amends when a larger threat arises (perhaps a Romulan ambush). The Enterprise D is heavily damaged like in Generations and the Enterprise B sacrifices itself to save the crew of the Enterprise D. The plot is straight forward, but the point of the film is to show the difference between the two captains and to warn against meeting your idols. The biggest issue with First Contact is Patrick Stewart is playing Die Hard Picard; he needed to be more regal. Also, Data isn’t a Terminator, but that’s nitpicking. I don’t have the energy to complain about Insurrection and Nemesis…

Personally, I would rank all the films as follows… 15. Into Darkness 14. Nemesis 13. The Final Frontier 12. The Motion Picture (Theatrical Cut) 11. Insurrection 10. Generations 9. The Search for Spock 8. First Contact 7. (2009) 6. Beyond 5. Galaxy Quest 4. The Voyage Home 3. The Motion Picture (Director’s Edition) 2. The Undiscovered Country 1. The Wrath of Khan

To be fair, Picard has disregarded the Prime Directive plenty of times as well. They both have violated the "Temporal Prime Directive" within their own movies. Picard once, arguably twice: using the Nexus to change events then (debatable) when he went back in time to stop the Borg and assist in First Contact (which is where the most egregious offense is, exposing the people of Earth to technology far beyond theirs before they even had taken their first warp flight).

I like The Motion Picture, Wrath of Khan, and Undiscovered Country in no fixed order. Saying The Motion Picture is "slow" is like saying Alien is slow or Unforgiven.

it's slow and boring.

1, 2, and 3, matches my all time ST movies as well. Maybe a little more 2 than 1, but it would be very close.

I agree with you on 'Wrath of Khan', it's only real competition is the Star Wars film 'The Empire Strikes Back'. But I would have made Star Trek 6 number 2, Star Trek 4 number 3, Star Trek 'First Contact' number 4, and (that's right) Star Trek 'Beyond' numbers 5. Despite wanting to keep it from being too 'StarTrekkie', 'Beyond' is the ONLY Trek movie of the 3 eras that feels like a REAL episode of the Original Star Trek! P.S.- No F'n LENS FLARES, EXPLODING planet Volcan, Illogical romance between Spock and Uhura, or the SIN of FLIPPING Kirk out for Spock in a sad effort. Finally, Benedict Cumberbach does a fine job as Khan, but it is POLITICAL CORRECT BULL-SHIT to insist on ALL VILLAINS being STRAIGHT WHITE MALES! Out!!

This would be a difficult task. First, the Kelvin Universe is a completely Other take. The original cast has so much cache that I'd put all of theres on one scale and the Kelvin on another. Otherwise, for me, even though I enjoyed them, they'd be at the end of the list. Kind of the same with TOS and TNG. All TOS at the top (even 5), and TNG next. While Wrath of Kahn was better, The Motion Picture was great, as long as you take into account that ST movies were new and had a massive learning curve (how do you make something a decade after the show that ramps up to movie level? The intros of the characters was fantastic, and even the coast around Enterprise was amazing... speaking from seeing it in the theaters at the time).

My ranking is different mostly because of my positive feelings about The Motion Picture, but I also share Roddenberry's issues with The Undiscovered Country. Galaxy Quest doesn't really do it for me, either, but I suppose I'd have to rank it over most of the TNG movies. --- The Great Ones --- 1. The Motion Picture 2. The Wrath of Khan 3. The Voyage Home 4. First Contact --- The Good Ones --- 5. Beyond 6. Star Trek '09 7. The Search for Spock --- The Okay Ones --- 8. The Final Frontier [Galaxy Quest] 9. Nemesis --- The Bad Ones --- 10. Generations 11. The Undiscovered Country 12. Insurrection --- The Insulting One --- 13. Into Darkness

Nimoy said without Star Wars there would never have been Star Trek movies. So we can enjoy them both, for different reasons.
