Learn to dock a boat in tight spaces! In this video we explain how to dock a boat in close quarters using just your engines to pivot yourself 180 degrees and turn on a dime - this is how to spin your boat with two motors! We also show an alternative method to boat docking if you can't quite make the turn and need to use your wheel.

An easy way to remember which way each motor will push the boat in reverse is. Put one hand on each throttle, stick out your thumbs, that's the way each motor will push the boat in reverse. Opposite for forward. That's provided the port side motor is counter rotating, which most are. Learn Port vs Starboard and Bow vs Stern. That adds an extra level of professionalism to the overall video and makes it easier to explain which throttle you have in which position. Otherwise Bravo! Very impressive ladies! Whoever taught you two how to handle a boat deserves a cold one he did a good job.

These are the things I've been teaching my now 11 year old daughter. Take your time, it's not a race, plan your moves, it's not going to react immediately like a car. Read the wind and current. I'm curious, how long have you been boating and how did you learn? Loved this, I'm going to subscribe to this channel.

Thanks so much for this tutorial. I have tried to get my 26 ft boat with twin 225 Yamaha's lined up with my boat lift (usually by myself) and I didn't really understand about the better control while backing. This will also come in handy when docking at a restaurant or even getting gas at a crowded marina. I need to spend more time practicing and definitely will watch this video over and over. When the wind or current happens, my tendency is to panic and overcompensate but now I know not to be heavy on the forward throttle. I agree with thegrtwhthunter that it is nice to see two beautiful young ladies educate rather than be exploited in string bikinis!

Awesome tutorial! I like the saying "Only go as fast as you wanna hit he dock" but if it is windy however you will need much more throttle to be able to maneuver the boat. With my single-engine outboard, I just go towards the dock as fast as I need to have steering ability and then I push the wheel hard over to the dock and put in a short reverse and it will stop all speed/momentum and bring the aft in.

Excellent video, definitely learned a ton since my dual engine experience is in the single digit hour range. Would like to point out that the reason that the forward running engine has more influence at lower RPM's is because of the propeller design. The propellers are designed to push water most efficiently going forward through how the water flow is introduced to the blades, the pitch, and the slope and even a small amount of flair at the blade edge. Turned in reverse fashion they do still move water but with nowhere near as much efficiency and thrust as forward. So that's why you need more RPM in reverse to get equal amounts of thrust as the forward running prop. Neat video idea if nobody has done it: Source a sort of junky boat and motor combo (because it just might cavitate and blow up or even break the blades off), mill the propeller down so that it fits on backwards, compare forward performance with it on correctly with reverse as well as driving forward and reverse. Should be awful but entertaining. :-)

Good Job Amanda. Here is a little hep on nautical vocabulary so you can teach those who has never been onboard and also will help you among other fellows skippers. Your boat configuration is a twin engine, so you have a port engine and a starboard engine. Your port side is your left hand when looking ahead of the boat or to the bow. The starboard your right. So turning the bend you set your port engines astern and the starboard engine ahead to turn the boat to port (to the left) without the need of turning the rudder (the wheel), just keeping it midship (to the center). To swing around the boat you did Kicks astern on your port engine and kicks ahead on your stbd engine. We called "stop engine" when the propeller is not turning but the motor is still running. It is easier, faster an less confussing to say: "stop engine" That would help you in situatuin when you have to stand facing the stearn of the boat to move it backwards in zig zag to sort out other boat at anchor or evan bouys, with one engine ahead and the other astern and then switching. Keep it up

LOL In the Army we had LCM & LCU. The LCU was 120 feet and 3 props. It has been too long since I ran one, but you throw one engine in reverse, one in forward and I think you throw the steering the opposite direction you want to go and it would crab side ways into the dock. I think the Army had gotten rid of most LCU.

It was weird how you would get the 120 boat to crab side ways to the dock. Wheel was thrown to the opposite direction and one throttle was shifted forward or reverse and the other throttle was shifted in the opposite direction and what i recall center throttle in neutral, I looked on goggle several months ago and mist of the boats are gone. I heard the navy has ordered some new LCU.

I have a 29 fot inboard boat with a bow thruster so for me the most important thing is to get the transom in and then i can thrust my bow in

What I learned most from this video is that if I ever strike it rich and buy a big boat, I'm just gonna hire y'all to captain it for me. #LeaveTheDockingToTheTwins

Excellent work. I work with Marine Rescue here, and we have two sayings that you two have exemplified in this video: "Slow is pro", and "Neutral is a gear". Thank you.

Like a champ. Gotta love the tight canals in the keys. Running stone crab traps a couple years on a twin was cake. Docking a 45 sailboat with a single engine in wind was pucker and the key was planning your approach to have the prop walk help you. G

What a great video. Thank you so much for the good info. I agreed with every thing you said, but it also takes the right touch to do it correctly, and that is what you have.
