Here's a short testing video we did showing how to open up, repair, and reset/change the battery in a Gallagher Smartfix Fault Finder. It takes a small 3v Battery with the universal part number CR2032 or just 2032, whatever is stamped on the packaging.

I got quite an old one of these, changed the battery a couple of times on it. Low battery fault was showing again on screen, so I changed it, fault was still showing, and after tinkering with battery a bit it has stopped showing anything on the screen (completely dead). I guess it’s dead and rubbish now, unless you know of a fix for this? Edit: Nevermind! Watched the rest of the video and saw the trick shorting out the battery terminals and that fixed it! Thanks very much!

Yep, sometimes you have to do a reset on it at the same time the battery is being changed. They do offer parts for this tester as well so they can be fixed.

Hi. What would cause this tester to under-read voltage? When compared to a speedrite tester it reads about 20% lower voltage but the current is the same. Thanks

Hi Jim, it depends on what the other brand of tester is and how you're testing it. Some brands of testers will test other brands of fence chargers accurately and some brands don't. It also depends if you're using a fault finder type of tester, most of those don't have a ground probe on them. So if you use one of those you have to test across the unit at fence and ground at the same time, if you don't, you'll only get a partial kv reading. When you're out on the fence, your hand and body are acting as the ground probe, so then you're testing across fence and ground at the same time and you'll get an accurate reading at that point.
