I agree with his comments. I trained judo for 10 years and became a black belt, but injuries have caught up to me. Now I train mostly BJJ because it's easier on the body. But the intensity from judo has helped me transition well into BJJ and helped me push the pace in my training. I just wish the BJJ community was as open to cross training at different schools as the judo community. Judo believes in letting the individual become the best, so train anywhere that will make your judo better, and we welcomed outside people to train with us because we could learn from them. I would train at 3 different judo schools during competition time, and that was common. BJJ has more pride in their school, so you only train with members of your organization. And everyone wears a team gi from their BJJ school and stays within their team to train. I wish there was more openness with BJJ. It would advance grappling a lot.

@@suokurppa752 unfortunately I've seen it a lot in other schools where I live. Most of the time they're open for people to train at other places if it's within their system or your coach has a relationship with those coaches. I've seen it with Gracie's for sure being really territorial, but other schools are also very territorial. Usually students go to other schools secretly. It's a lot better now than before, though, and hopefully it gets even more free so there's more cross training.

I started off in judo 11 years old then jiu jitsu at 25. Judo involves bigger more power based movements and gave me advantages vs bjj guys when starting bjj. Bjj has its advantages in longer drawn out conflicts. Overall judo can get a guy off you in the streets better than bjj as bjj requires you to be vulnerable to get into it such as on your back. First 60 seconds of a sreet fight you bjj will need to be high level to avoid damage from an all out assault if on your back.
@shemshem9998
@shemshem9998 2 жыл бұрын
what I always say with the BJJ and judo debate on defence. if you need your BJJ, you have already fucked up, you never want to go to BJJ, because that means you are on the ground already, where you can't run, get curb stomped in the head by another guy, etc. the best-case scenario in any fight, is with you standing and the other guy on the floor, which is the exact goal of judo (well comp bends that a bit, but still)
@jackjack4412
@jackjack4412 2 жыл бұрын
So would judo be better than wrestling in this aspect? Because with wrestling takedowns, you're going down to the ground with the other guy.
@ytname18
@ytname18 Жыл бұрын
@@jackjack4412 from my uninformed opinion both would be good in different ways. What you say about going down with the takedown in wrestling might be true. Judo might also be more suitable against a stronger opponent. But, judo is more accustomed to someone with solid clothes. Such as a jacket. With regards to ground, judo has the advantage of more elaborate groundwork from a self defence standpoint plus teaching submissions. However, some people argue that you shouldn't even be doing that stuff on the streets and just 'wrestle your way up'. I think for most people you're probably not going to be in that many fights anyway so just pick a more or less effective martial art that you like. If I was living in an environment with lots of violence (as a guy bigger than most) and I had to choose between the two I might go for wrestling, because you can slam people with it and because of the explosiveness it creates in it's athletes.

@@stur6722 nope, I did technical bjj, as in perfecting everybosikble technique and not just the stuff thst would work in comp, I've done bjj in a ufc gym, and gracy bjj. And I've tried out in a lot of different dojos, but none had propper tske down guys, now and then you would get a guy who did some wrestling on the side but you would just headlock them in a second. I've only met a hand full that could actually stand a chance against me in standing game, and most of them where cross training different martial arts. They just don't focus on it enough, because think of every bjj match, half of them start with the guy who is worse at standing going straight to guard, or even if they actuaky go for it they trip each other in the first 5 seconds, and then continue the other 2:55 on the ground. No single bjj school has a true focus on take downs. I know brown belt bjj guys who prefer to stay guard rather than standing, and I'm only a blue belt in judo. There isn't enough of a focus on standing in any form of bjj

Judo imo is way better than BJJ. BJJ is kind a “boring” and doesn’t require much athleticism. Judo, being faster, stronger, more explosive, having more endurance etc. makes you a more effective fighter provided you are learning the techniques. Nothing against BJJ though it is definitely beneficial but idk I think we can’t just rely on that. Judo will save your life on the streets.

The 3rd lesson wound up with a huge bruise on the inside of my leg after a blue belt passed my guard and intentionally hurt me. I have done Judo for over 10 years and have never been hurt other than my back from time to time and that's just me getting old. We had a BJJ guy come and train with us for awhile and he wound up breaking one of the guys ankle because he was an asshole. He couldn't win without some sort of dirty trick. Even against my son who was a green belt at the time and he supposedly had higher rank in BJJ and my son beat his ass. He got kicked out after breaking the guys ankle. Ankle locks aren't allowed in Judo.

I train in both, although my main sport is judo. There's something about BJJ that you didn't mention: injuries. In judo, you take big beatings, it can hurt a lot, even break a bone sometimes. But in BJJ, injuries come from damaging your body when resisting too much, putting too much strength. These injuries can last for ever and damage your body long term, especially the neck. Most adults don't realise that and prefer to train BJJ, because it's less cardio and less scary than judo. But long term... Ouch!

I agree with most of what he said. And I have used BJJ twice in my life to keep me safe from violence. For context I trained Judo recreationally in the 1980s and early 90s and along with Karate and some boxing starting earlier . BJJ was a game-changer and I started training late 1993-ish. Much easier on the body and because it was systematised and on was taught to be relaxed it allowed me to submit good Judo black belts as a white belt, or at least be able to go the distance (generally I used wrestling takedowns which worked well against judoka not used to single leg and double leg attacks, etc.) The arc of application and timing in Judo can be years and in BJJ it was weeks. Judo also cause a couple physical problems with limit my movements today. Now I am old, but for the general population, BJJ is much better, easier to learn, easier on the body (depending on training), and much more effective along with some basic takedowns and clinch work against punching. It is also more enjoyable.

Wrestling throws vs judo throws what do you think????
@Yourdrunkuncledave
@Yourdrunkuncledave 4 жыл бұрын
Well first of it should be said that there is a substantial amount of overlapping techniques between the two. I think Wrestling can be a little bit more incremental at times, what I mean is that often in wrestling, you gradually work your way from a standing position to a ground position whereas in Judo this doesn't really happen and hence it seems to be the more explosive one of the two. Both are equally effective for different reasons and situations, I think wrestling takedowns might be a bit easier to pick up in a short amount of time and they are relatively low risk high reward whereas Judo throws are rather high risk high reward, they tend to be more impactful in Judo, but you often sacrifice your back when throwing, both approaches have their advantages and disadvantages.

Theres a funny little story about how "effective" martial arts can be due to its popularity and bullshit. When I grew up in the 70s and 80s. Karate was like magic. Then came taekwondo to stay. That was lethal. Judo was very popular but despite the fact that I was Stockholm champion I never believed that judo was effective. So it probably wasn't. Because I didn't know how effective it was I had no confidence outside the mat. Tae kwon do guys could fly and all kinds of crazy things so you probably won a fight just by saying that you had a yellow belt in tkd. Hell... A "flashy" kick and an 18 Yr old opponent wet his pants... Now I'm 49 and I don't laugh at any jiu-jitsu guys anymore. These were the "lame" arts when I grew up. From a pure self defense perspective, Judo (and wrestling) are superior when things go well, which if you're reasonably experienced, they generally will. BJJ is idea for when things go very poorly, and is to a large extent, is based on succeeding despite a worse case scenario, so much so that BJJ practitioners often use the worse case scenario as a starting point, which get's made fun of a lot, but isn't completely unsound. One builds a cake assuming everything was done correctly, the other builds a cake assuming you fucked up the recipe and the oven is too hot, then works backwards to fix things and end up with a decent cake anyway. Two equally valid ways of dealing with the same basic problem.

Judo is Jūjutsu. Kano said it best; “Jūjutsu are the techniques, but Judo is a way of life”. Jūjutsu (Jiu-Jitsu) is all about real combat grappling. Judo is a sport. Jūjutsu is combat. There is the main difference. Same techniques, different purpose. Judo works in self-defense. But if you bring back the aggressive and deadly techniques Judo banned for many years, it’s Jūjutsu again. Judo today is a lot less than what it used to be. They banned leg grabbing and ne-waza (ground fighting). Which means they won’t bother to train people in them. Kosen Judo on the otherhand, keeps all those intact. But that particular style of Judo is not as widely available. Personally, I’d say stick to Jūjutsu. But Judo is a good beginner martial art and then transition into Jūjutsu. Any style of Jūjutsu. doing judo and bjj helps you grow into "any other sports" more than any other sport? really? even cycling and tennis? i dunno. generally in judo there's usually more emphasis on just spendinqg time in class doing basic physical education type stuff. Like you would find in HS (american) football or wrestling program, comes from the youth based orientation vs the adult class orientation of BJJ. Combine that with more emphasis on just pushing pace and plyo / explosive movements over the control and technical flow of BJJ( this is a big generalization and of course it all has its place in both sports ), as a general sports thing, judo is probably a better gateway into just general athletics than BJJ. Which really depends on the school or club. But no more so than high school wrestling or football. And, a competition oriented BJJ club is going to be a lot more grueling and physical and athletically demanding than a softball Judo club geared towards kids and hobbyists.

Rick Rodriguez Judo is like boxing because it has way more artificial rules that forces people to focus on a smaller subset of grappling. In the context of grappling bjj, especially submission grappling definitely resembles kickboxing in the analogy since it basically has no rules. Nobody forbids you to focus on takedown game in bjj, in fact some wrestlers won ADCC before. It is just not wise in the context of submission grappling. If by real fight, you mean in mma then yeah sure, a pure judoka might do better than pure black belt bjj of the same level under unified rule set due to athleticism but even that’s not a guarantee since bjj will outclass judoka on the ground. If you mean vale tudo, bjj will fair much better.

@@ddg-fi5bp I'm talking about a fight. In the street or mama sure. And you're talking about competition judo and bjj. I'm talking about the actual art form taught. Which is why I prefaced my statement with any "good judo school. " some only focus on Olympic rules judo. That's not good. However plenty of judo schools teach the artform as intended. Some even spend 70% of their time doing newaza "rolling " So it is perfectly plausible that high level judoka could more than hold his or her own on the ground with any bjj practitioner. Also as i stated before their takedowns and takedown defense would be lightyears better.

Rick Rodriguez If ur not talking about a sport, it’s hard to say. Let’s say schools that focus on mma self-defense. A good example is Gracie style bjj. Gracie jj emphasizes on throws too, just fewer throws than judoka do. And once on the ground, Gracie jj gets much deeper on ground survival, guard reversal etc. Since ippon is usually merely a transition, I think spending more time on the ground is wise since there’s so many ways u can end up on ur back (in a scramble, knockdown, takedown), or need to proceed to finish after u take someone down. Also, almost all mma fighters train bjj, u can’t say the same for judo.

Would love to know the IJF rationale behind that decision. For me it seems closed minded or even they are worried about what I believe to be inevitable and that is we are going to end up with world ranking judo players becoming world ranking BJJ and vice versa and saying " fuck it I'm sick of this BS and I'll create a new system which is more complete and I'll call it Brazilian Judo Brizialliando Jiudo Judo jitsu" Etc. Must admit I'd wouldn't ask for permission fuckem, can they prove it? Also stopping cross training is like saying " oh you do judo? Well you can't do strenght and conditioning then." Anyway that's what Kano did. He learned multiple different Ju jitsu styles and kept what he liked gor rid of what he didn't to create Kano ju jitsu (judo).

I suspect the reason is to stop their world class competitors getting injured whilst competing in other sports, so from that perspective it makes perfect sense. Look at what happened to Robert Kubica (F1 driver) when he decided to compete in rally driving in his down-time. He had a terrible accident which ruined a promising F1 career 😔.

@UCCiLUnz8KCTO-oQ8n-bAhLA you don't get you idiot. Newaza means "ground techniques". The Gracies tried Judo but it was to hard. They were to weak for other throw techniques so they focused only on "Newaza". So basically bjj is just a small part of Judo. The Gracies didn't created NOTHING. They fooled you dumbasses white Americans.

Boxing is just punches, Kickboxing is kicks and punches. BJJ is throws and submissions with less emphasis on throws. Judo is submissions and throws with more emphasis on throws. Throws more useful for slamming someone on concrete for self defence. Submission focus is more useful for 1v1 fighting in a padded cage
