I know the concept is ludicrous, but this is one of my favorite episodes of the series. It's not high brow, but I love it when sci fi manages to take a hard left from reality. It was also a chance for the makeup team to really show off, as they got to perform extensive work on characters that get minimal amounts of makeup.

Spot’s c plot is my favorite part of this episode. Mostly because spot has always been referred to with he / him pronouns and has kittens - BUT ALSO - because this opens up the idea that even in a spaceship with personal quarters cats can figure out how to get mysteriously knocked up while also being home in time for their robot daddy to give replicated feline supplement.

See, TNG missed a big opportunity to just have cats wandering the corridors at random times, which would've justified this whole pregnancy thing so much more. Also, I wonder what the spay/neuter policy is here. I'm sure in addition to solving poverty disease and prejudice, the Federation has solved animal welfare, but wouldn't taking away their reproductive freedom infringe on their animal rights just as much as keeping Livingston in a tank?

Dwight Shultz's Reg Barclay is *literally* the most real person character that ever appeared on TNG. He's got flaws like any real person, and it works SO well compared to the "heroes" of the main cast. Love Reg!

the introduction of 'extra' characters that show up occationally to play significant roles is one of TNG's major improvements, the likes of Barclay, O'Brian and Lwaxana enrich the show so much, making it feel more real and breaking out of the limitations a fixed cast has, it also means you can drop amazing actors in for a random episode

I think Geordi is pretty human too. He's not known as like a miracle worker like Scotty (or even O'Brien on DS9), he's just a highly competent, professional engineer, who is also not totally happy in his personal life most of the time.

This is SUCH an interesting episode. Converting it from Sci-Fi to a more Horror genre. (Done far better than the one with Crusher's "sex ghost"!) I particularly loved the amazing "physical acting" done by the cast! In the conference room, you see Barclay moving more "arachnid-like". (at least, as much as he can as a humanoid) And you can even see the early stages of a "knuckle dragging monkey" in Nurse Ogawa's movements as well! And they do it in such a way that it is not excessively overt upon initial viewing but is clear / obvious in hindsight. And yeah, McFadden being the director was WHY Dr. Crusher was "taken out" by a poison/ acid spray early in the episode. (So she could focus entirely on being "behind the camera" instead of splitting her attention any more than need be.) Technically Dr. Crusher was only in the very earliest stages of the virus before she was put into suspended animation. (which would have halted her de-evolution) So no, her face wasn't "fixed" by "re-evolving" but by the high-tech medical reconstructive surgery. Personally, I think it would have been BETTER if they had had her with some "high tech" medical patches on her face, or something, at the end. (showing that she is still healing) But they probably didn't want to DEPRIVE the audience of seeing that lovely lady's face any more than they HAD to! lol
@jerodast
@jerodast Жыл бұрын
I would've loved if, unlike Troi making Data a prank cake to forgive him for stabbing her in "Phantasms", Crusher was just REALLY CRANKY at Worf in the denouement and like, 2 more episodes :) Yeah medical patches would've been a good idea but I guess they just felt like "this one was already so bonkers, let's just keep it simple and hit a full reset button" haha.

Masks was fun too. This episode is the "Spock's Brain" equivalent of TOS... an episode that while not good...is a whole lot of campy fun and just as rewatchable as the good episodes. "Sub Rosa" is the equivalent to "And the Children Shall Lead", an episode not just bad but excruciatingly tedious and if watched at all, should only be watched once just to say you did, if you are trying to watch every episode of the series.

@@patsk8872 Many apparently did, myself included. It definitely does not deserve the hate it apparently gets. Star Trek has always had shoddy science. Is it just because they use the horrifying "E" word? I don't know. Was it a great episode? No. Was it thought provoking or real-world relevant? Not really. Was it terrible? Absolutely not. It was fun. ... and that's what I think is lost on most people. They've forgotten how to have fun. Some for risk of looking somehow silly in the eyes of others, so they overcompensate. Others simply derive what they think is enjoyment by identifying and labelling everything they possibly can as "stupid" or (the more common word used these days)"garbage". Nothing is allowed to be just good, or average, or poor anymore. It has to be Excellent, or its garbage. Well I'm sorry, this episode is FAR from garbage, it just happens to not be excellent.

I mean it was explicitly implied in "Parallels" that Worf was thinking in that direction and Troi was open to it; these bits are continuing in that vein. Loved it ! You Gals had so much fun ! 🙂 Yeah, it's a bonkers script.., but what I love about it is that the Actors got a chance to play with character & personality. If you watch it back a 2nd time, you can really see the characteristics of the 'de-evolved' life-forms that the each of the crew were becoming. Kat remember back to acting classes 101, the exercises where you have to 'personify' an animal a.k.a. 'Charade' it for the class. This show was that for me.... Oooh.., & also ponder this... Gates Mcfadden.. Choreographer & Theatre set/stage design, & her Jim Henson production connections... hell yes - this was right in her 'wheel-house' for ST: TNG Directorial Debut, & by all accounts she had a BLAST ! with the material, as you can see on screen. Closing note : Dwight Shultz - always good, so great at Character commitment, possibly as good as Patrick Stewart. If you ever get to see him in the Role of Captain "Howling Mad" Murdock on the 1980s action series The A-Team, HE'S JUST AS GOOD 😍 ps. It wouldn't matter, because they wouldn't have had the budget to do anything other than just bring someone's pet lizard onto the set for a day. If they had the ability, you bet your backside they'd have made something considerably more alien-looking.

It seems like they did actually put in some overtime on makeup for this one, but I don't think any of us could imagine the cat wrangler's nightmare if you tried to put creative lizard alien attachments on Spot haha. I think there's a certain contingent of fans who felt like as the show approached the finale it should be all heavy hitters with lots of character every single time, so this one was like "argh, maybe this is funny but you're spending one of your few remaining hours on THIS?" I bet that feeling has dissipated a lot now that the original airing is long over, everything's available on streaming, you can jump around to any episode you like, and people can appreciate it for what it is.

I think the idea is, life evolved from a single starting point on the planet, so even though certain genes developed and mutated and evolved to form your own species, you also still have plenty of inactive genes that were the seeds of other species too. I do wonder how much that is true, I think it's SLIGHTLY more realistic than it sounds but also those "fragments" must be way too fractured and not-in-the-form-they-mutated-to-as-species-diverged to actually turn you into a spider or anything haha.

I mean this one I think works just as well as a crazy romp on a modern show haha. There are other really great episodes where the continuity or effects or stiffer act structure or whatever feels a little more off from a really good episode of a modern show, where I have to slightly make a mental adjustment to account for the older style, but this one I don't feel like I have to do that - if I'm in the mood for something this goofy, of course :)

@jerodast
@jerodast Жыл бұрын
I didn't see this full episode in awhile, and I tried checking Memory Alpha summary but I could not figure out what happened to the computer exactly, do you know? I can't imagine why any devolved crew member would actively erase the memory or anything. IIRC Voyager computers have some kind of bioneural components that can actually be infected biologically, which naturally they used in several episodes much like this one, but I didn't think that was the case on the Enterprise-D, was it? Maybe it was somehow related to other ship breakdowns due to Worf Damage or lack of maintenance - although it's concerning if the ship technically goes to hell in just 2 days of passive operation haha. I think I heard they might actually carry a backup memory core and so on, but it would probably have to be installed manually. If it was set up so you could just flip a switch, I'm sure that's not a bad idea to have ONE backup configured that way, but it also puts the backup at risk of the same damage that might affect the main computer. No "air gap".

I love the batshit episodes something fierce. Sub Rosa, this, a few third season episodes of TOS... seriously! The science is absolute garbage but I barely care. And yes, Barclay is my favorite non-main character. He's basically me as a Trek character except I have this weird feeling I'd be enlisted. And... I cannot wait for the movies. The 9th and 10th ones are also ones that I think are worthy of debate, but are they fun to watch? Plus you need to know one thing about DS9 to watch First Contact whereas Insurrection is practically _based_ on the latter stages of said show, so...

The science is always garbage. I think people single this one out because it happened to use the scary "E" word. But its no worse than a Sherlock Holmes hologram character becoming sentient, or four adults being turned to kids by the transporter (another episode that was just crazy fun). Star Trek has NEVER been "hard sci-fi"

@@k1productions87 Fair enough, but it does try to present itself as living in our universe of physics, and in our universe, evolution is not a straight predetermined line. Evolution basically means random crap happens and if it's good, that gene becomes more common until things change. In the Trekverse evolution IS a straight predictable line... one of the reasons why I'm hoping they choose to do Voyager at some point is due to one of the most epic examples of that concept in the second season.

@@cypher515 Except in this episode, Data outright says that numerous possibilities could emerge, rather than a singular path, and that it could involve traits from many different species, depending on one's planet of origin. Which one it happens to be depends on which dormant genes in which person happen to randomly be the most dominant among the dormant genes. As for the Voyager episode, all the Doctor said was natural evolution, and "possibly" a future stage of development. NOT "this is exactly what WILL happen" and there is no rule anywhere that says it has to. Again, its people attributing definites and absolutes where there are none.

@@k1productions87 In that Voyager episode the exact same thing happened to two entities to the point that said entities were genetically compatible, which is only one of the reasons SF Debris broke the ratings scale for it. But seriously, we're splitting hairs here. I agree that they valiantly struggled and mostly succeeded in papering over the cracks of the science with Treknobabble. It's just that when a plot relies on the science, it can get distracting when they stretch it this far. In my opinion, anyway.

@Raja1938 Жыл бұрын
From various interviews of writers & producers, it's not that they misunderstand science. They have science advisors, and many of the writers have technical backgrounds. It's just for the purposes of a 50 min show, they have to weigh fidelity to hard science against telling an entertaining story in a format understandable for a mainstream audience. When the two conflict, the story wins out more often than not.
@k1productions87

That is literally the opposite of what they said. Data very clearly spells out how the introns have genetic information of life from all over one's planet of birth. Yes, it was just an excuse to have many different variations, but they VERY CLEARLY state that it IS NOT just "we evolved from spiders", and they say "mutation" multiple times on top of it. Its funny,... whenever someone uses the scary "E" word, its like every other word they use just goes in one ear and out the other and treated as if it never existed.

@@Raja1938 There have been literally 0 times that evolution has been brought up in Star Trek that have had even a slight amount of scientific accuracy. I understand your point, the story takes precedent over the science, but they do have a particular issue with evolution that always bugs me.

@@FortoFight To say they've never brought it up accurately is a bit hyperbolic. Offhand, I remember from "The Omega Glory": KIRK: There are people here over a thousand years old, Bones. MCCOY: Survival of the fittest, because their ancestors who survived had to have a superior resistance. Then they built up these powerful protective antibodies in the blood during the wars. Now, if you want to destroy a civilization or a whole world, your descendants might develop a longer life, but I hardly think it's worth it.
@jerodast

This take is actually a bit of a misunderstanding of the idea though. They're not saying literally spiders came before us in the evolutionary tree, they're saying spiders and us had a common ancestor in the tree. Within that common ancestor genome there was the potential to evolve into both spider and human; the species diverged more and more. So that's what they're getting at. Honestly if they didn't just leave it as "de-evolution" but explained more it was "de-evolution followed by re-evolution" it would ALMOST make some sense haha. So don't get me wrong it is very goofy, but I like that idea of moving up and down the evolutionary tree because we all share those same origins.

I never liked this episode just because I don't like Horror as a genre to begin with. It's very well made but I just can't stand it. Roxann Dawson from ST Voyager directed several Enterprise episodes to great effect. (may be one or two Voyager episodes as well if memory serves) There is a similar deevolution episode in Voyager but it's regarded as the stupidest episode of the whole series. Threshold from season 2. Ironically, I quite like it contrary to Genesis. Barclay reappears in later seasons of Voyager as a Starleet Communications specialist who helps Starfleet to establish contact with the stranded vessel thanks to his genius... Deanna is there to help him through his social hardships as well and she has some bad ass moments with some other random but important character as well. His apparition in First Contact technically predates his apparition on Voyager, both in the timeline and in production. He left the Enterprise sometime after First Contact. Although, he also appears in the videogame Elite Force II as the Enterprise engineer in lieu of Geordi for some reason. Kat, you should watch The A Team some day... Dwight Shultz is in there and blasts everything off !
