You are really good at this. You would make an excellent Logic Instructor for a school like maybe…Full Sail University online. You have great energy and your videos are never boring. You have the skills to have a few more revenue generating sources. You have opened my eyes so much because you don’t just ell us about it- you show us by getting straight to the real application and on to the next! Cheers to your soon to be 50k subscribers!

I've been using Logic for 10 years and I did not know the time selection/stretch trick from the piano roll thanks! Just to add on though if you separate by note pitch on a single output instrument like drum kit designer, the resulting tracks are not separate mixer tracks. If you change a plugin on one, you change it on all of them. A fast way to separate them for real into audio is to select all the regions and hit control + command + B which bounces the track in place to audio. There is no fast way to separate them as midi instrument outside of duplicating the OG instrument track as many times as you have regions and dragging them down to the new instrument tracks.

This is a great video, and as always I've learned a few useful little tips. I hope you don't mind, but I have a couple of little things to add in case anyone finds them useful: 1) When using the step sequencer, if you want to change a particular value for every note on one row (like when the snare was super loud in this video at 08:05), you can either click on the little up and down arrows at the right hand side of the track header, or click and drag them up or down to make bigger changes. It works with whatever value you have selected, including note on/off, so it's also a slightly quicker way of adding or deleting notes from every square in a row. 2) If you separate a midi region by note pitch (like at 10:56), each track it creates is actually running through the same instance of the instrument plugin, so it only shows up as one channel in the mixer (and if you mute/solo the individual tracks in the arrange window or change their volume, all the tracks will be affected at the same time). By itself, this doesn't give you any more control of the mix. If you want to be able to mix the individual drums in a kit separately, you have two options. Option 1: duplicate the drum track a few times (select the track and press cmd+D). This creates entirely separate copies of the track, so you can then separate the midi region by note pitch and drag the different regions to the relevant new tracks. But the much more efficient way of doing it is Option 2: use multi output instruments. Lots of instrument plugins (including drum kit designer) can send different things to different channels in the mixer (you have to make sure you have the multi-output version of the plugin loaded). You'll then notice a little + sign on that channel in the mixer. Click on that a few times and it'll show you all the different outputs (kick, snare, hi-hats, etc). If you want even more control, you can select one of the multi-output kits in the library. All the routing and everything is already set up for you, but it includes all the individual microphones (snare top/snare bottom, etc, as well as overhead mics, room mics, etc).

Thanks for these tips! One correction though: As I've learned recently, the "Chance" parameter in the step sequencer does NOT randomize the given step on each iteration of the loop. Instead, the probability you set will simply determine whether or not that step will play EVERY TIME. So the step will either always play or never play, and "Chance" just determines the probability for one or the other scenario, but once you play the sequence back for the first time, it stays deterministic from there.

Excellent SEIDS... Drum production tricks are always a winning topic. Humanizing them and getting the random hits as you showed. Also you cover midi instruments well. I enjoy seeing how you use loops to inspire and then get those loops working as midi instruments. Good stuff. Blessings and success to you!

Many thanks, very useful! Just a quick note that if you change the starting position to anything other than 1 1 1 1, the project becomes incompatible with Logic for iPad.

It's really really useful. It can be a really quick and simple way to program a drumbeat, but you can also get really experimental with it. For example, you can make different parts different lengths, so I love making a hi-hat part that's like, 1 beat shorter than everything else, so each time the pattern plays, the hi-hats play at slightly different points. The whole thing eventually lines up again, but it means a 2 bar loop is now essentially an 8 bar loop or whatever. Great fun!
