GameMaker will always have a place in my heart. My programming life started as a kid learning BBC Basic for Windows, but Gamemaker is really what started my love of programming. So many hours spent creating passion projects that are unfortunately lost to time. 10 years later and I am a professional game programmer now. I grew up with game maker as well. But I quickly grew jaded of it in the GM Studio 1.x days. I never looked back after switching to Godot.

@@gamechannel1271 yeah. this. not only is the constant license validation a problem that will make it unusable once the validation system goes down (they did provide an offline validator 8 years ago or so but that's sadly no longer available), but gamemaker games have always had serious compatibility issues with different versions of windows (this has gotten somewhat better in the studio era, but still). what finally killed it for me, though, is the switch to a subscription model

As a construct dev, the programming is very limited, but it's minimal coding and built-in graphics creation make it *very* attractive to artists. It's the gamedev platform for people who hate to code. It is kinda limited, and really really big games tend to break, but if you want to get into jams it's incredible. Price is a bit annoying but they have a semi-crappy free version that's cool if you just wanna try it out.

I use Construct 2 for about 8 years for personal projects, spent little time making games on it. Mostly of my "C2 carrer" was making personal apps. Construct 2 and 3 is HTML5 and JS based, so the limits of this engine are the same limits as HTML+JS. I made a advanced expression-based calculator, a small app that estimates render time for 3D renders, a map editor for a game that is also made in C2... my most recent is a dashboard/overview for my musical projects so I can easily tag and listen to my own projects, kinda like soundcloud. I sometimes think myself if I'm the only living person that does that. Making apps is a lot more tricky than making games in C2, because of that I HAVE to know every single detail about this engine. I wish I had a portifolio to show those projects Xd

3:10 construct is strictly good for that kind of games tho. as a previous user of it for over 2 years, I can def that if you scale your game even a little bit over that size, the foundations will absolutely crumble - in comparison to what you could do in the likes of godot and unity, at the very least (modular components, hierarchy, scene templates, performance, effects, data manipulation, etc) it is absolutely blazing fast for jams tho, since you generally wont care about any of the scalability features above

I disagree with the order of some of the game engine and the reasonings for the order and I do not think you are looking at them objectively. Unity for example. I do not disagree with how they have shifted since going public but you said they do not dominate in any area but I have to disagree as the majority of top games created on the apple store I believe it is around 70-85% are created with unity. You also put Godot above Unity which I do not agree because of how mature the unreal engine and unity are. I personally love Godot but I do not think it is on the same playing field as unreal or unity as of yet but it is a good engine. If Unity dominated in an area that would probably be mobile. I also notice you left a lot of other game engines off the list that others are commenting about and I have used such as Stride, Cocos & Flax.

Strictly speaking about 2D development you can't seriously say that Unity is even close to Godot. It doesn't even support 2D. It's a 3D environment with camera tricks. Godot has a dedicated 2D editor with superb UI elements. And Unreal is too much of a overkill to make anything 2D. Some other aspects of Unity are still above Godot since it's a more mature engine, as you said. Although I don't think it has an unattainable status. Its tech isn't unique. It's not revolutionary. Other engines can catch up, and they will. The company is not even worth mentioning. Any product is made in spite of scummy money bags, not because of them.

They mainly dominate in the mobile area which is what they usually advertise for their engine and a mobile game can be either 2D or 3D. @@SurmenianSoldier For one the only supported language is GML which is very much on the slow side and is a tad low on features, 3d is nearly non-existent, no built in lighting engine, incredibly limited physics engine, ordering of object code is done with separate events where there is no ability to create your own, and a lot of smaller things like the camera being locked to the pixel grid (literally no fix for this) The engine is incredible for most things 2d, but it gets limited when you start trying to do things more advanced

Lol gm was my first game engine when i was 12 used it for two years and it is awesome for 2d sprite games for people who want to make games but keep it simple, yes you can do a lot more like 3d which is a lot harder with so much limitation but the cost of going beyond and above is high.It has a different atmosphere and its awesome, so comparing it with others are not really needed since their goals, methods and users and gms goal and methods and users are so much different.

As a Unity developer, and knowing what bad things Unity’s been doing nowadays, it seems hard to switch engines considering Unity is what I’m extremely used to. That’s obvious, considering the only full game I’ve released is made with Unity. I’ve made many others in the past, but they weren’t as good/finished as that game. Maybe continuing to take a break from game development is a good idea, but I still gotta get used to another engine other than Scratch.

Try Godot for three days and you probably won't turn back. I was using Unity and tried out Godot on a whim, realized the engine is awesome. With 4.0 it's really going to blow up, so now is a great time to start learning it. There are still some drawbacks but the engine developers actually understand and care about the updates users want, unlike Unity that is a black hole.

I would definitely drop Gamemaker lower. I started on it thinking it was easy and made several apps, seemed cool, but in retrospect the ide was pretty rough and not improved by gm studio 2. What really killed it for me though was the community management. Basic questions would get downvoted as though it wasn’t marketed to total beginners and so often the first response was essentially “RTFM.” It was super lame and sad, and now I’ve got several apps in limbo cause the IDE makes me feel some kinda way
