@@gamechannel1271 yeah. this. not only is the constant license validation a problem that will make it unusable once the validation system goes down (they did provide an offline validator 8 years ago or so but that's sadly no longer available), but gamemaker games have always had serious compatibility issues with different versions of windows (this has gotten somewhat better in the studio era, but still). what finally killed it for me, though, is the switch to a subscription model

As a construct dev, the programming is very limited, but it's minimal coding and built-in graphics creation make it *very* attractive to artists. It's the gamedev platform for people who hate to code. It is kinda limited, and really really big games tend to break, but if you want to get into jams it's incredible. Price is a bit annoying but they have a semi-crappy free version that's cool if you just wanna try it out.

As a Unity developer, and knowing what bad things Unity’s been doing nowadays, it seems hard to switch engines considering Unity is what I’m extremely used to. That’s obvious, considering the only full game I’ve released is made with Unity. I’ve made many others in the past, but they weren’t as good/finished as that game. Maybe continuing to take a break from game development is a good idea, but I still gotta get used to another engine other than Scratch.

ID tech 1(the doom engine): easy S teir notes runs on a fxxking calculator, limited to dos if you don't use source ports, use gzdoom if you want more complicated stuff and not simple changes, people still make (full) games on this now almost 30 year old engine (shrine/shrine 2/ Lycanthorn, sonic robo blast 2, freedoom.wad etc) The wolfenstien 3D engine (i call it the wolfen engine) C teir notes use the rise of the triad engine, less ports then doom (which is surprising since wolf3D is not only older but more basic), needs heavy modification to work properly with new music (even midi) games that use it: wolfenstein 3D, wolfenstein spear of Destiny, shadow caster, Blake stone, rise of the triad (modified enough for me to distinguish the 2 here but they are the same engine none the less) rise of the triad engine (I call it the triad engine) A teir direct update to the wolfen engine cursed with only about 5 source ports and like 2 that add stuff (not including the new ludicrous edition) games that use it: rise of the triad

Godot users like myself are rooting for Godot to be the Unity killer. Realistically it probably won't happen that way, but it sure would be satisfying to see an open source engine outpace a multi-billion dollar company, and wildly enough it feels within reach.

Speaking about source, Davey Wrede on The beginner's Guide (a good game, made in source, if you enjoy walking simulators) said source is a game in which is easy to make third person games consisting in rectangular rooms connected, and nothing else. The stanley parable was also made in source, but moved to unity for the deluxe edition, mostly because it's easier to port to multiple consoles.

Hello, construct-using dev here, 1. Construct 2, though lacks a couple features (wich can easily be recreated in construct 2 anyways), is free 2. We aren't wizards, vimlark's a wizard I have no idea how he adds so much polish 3. The scripting restrains though exist aren't usually as bad as you'd expect because they can be overcome in around an hour

I would definitely drop Gamemaker lower. I started on it thinking it was easy and made several apps, seemed cool, but in retrospect the ide was pretty rough and not improved by gm studio 2. What really killed it for me though was the community management. Basic questions would get downvoted as though it wasn’t marketed to total beginners and so often the first response was essentially “RTFM.” It was super lame and sad, and now I’ve got several apps in limbo cause the IDE makes me feel some kinda way

The concept of "unity not being good at anything" is pretty common in youtube, but saying godot has better 2d than unity is a huge overstatement. Unity has been in development for many years and the toolset is huge. I do believe it would have a lot more depth than a fairly new game engine, even if it is only in 2d.

"Scratch" Oh this is easily one of the worst for anything complex. The performance isn't even that bad anymore if you port to turbowarp, but the developers seem to insist on things that make it either cumbersome or just plane debilitated in the name is education and security. 1. Scratch is terrible for Data Structures. 2. Scratch has read-only Strings. 3. Scratch has no good way of creating a new variable/list. Some asinine construct of custom blocks doesn't count. 4. Functions in Scratch are pass by value and void return type. 5. Lists are limited to 200k in length. 6. File i/o is limited to manual list export/import. There is no way to do automatic file i/o. 7. There is no way to skew or stretch a texture in the current version of Scratch, which means that easily stamp-filling triangles for 3D rendering isn't an option. 8. Cloud variable limitations are highly problematic for any serious use case. Overall, Scratch is cool but I really hate the limitations it imposes on you. Definitely the kind of environment that forces you to work around its eccentricities rather than giving you the tools you need to do what you want.

Game developer here. I have used all of these engines. Unity and Unreal will always be in competition because Graphics and morons mix easily. The majority of Unreal games are first person based and Unity is user friendly. Godot will always beat out the competition due to zero licensing fees. Source (and source 2) are designed by valve who isn't financially available to the public. Buildbox is the best tool if you are not going to code- it is not only for phones. Amazon lumberyard is based on CryEngine which is out of date, but is the friendliest crossplatform provider you can find for online usage. Game maker studio is strictly 2D and teaches the basic fundamentals, how much work and dedication you will need, as well as how crucial specialized tools are from the start. Construct 3 does the same thing as game maker studio and Build box with added extras. RPG Tsukūru is a simplistic 2d pixel engine purely for RPG elements, long stories and phase based gameplay. Scratch is barely even a game engine, but it is designed for those in elementary school if one is interested. This tier list is trash due to biases, poor comparisons and possibly having no experience using them. If you did, you would understand that you can only contrast so much when using potatoes to solar systems in your examples.
