And so the Jaqen debate begins. Why did he let himself be captured and put in that wagon? A: He was on the way to the wall to quietly kill Ned Stark. Why did he tell Arrya that nonsense about paying for 3 lives with 3 other lives? A: It was to test her to see if she could name a life to be taken.

In the books, they go much more into detail on how dangerous wildfire is. In the chapter where he went to the alchemist, the chamber was deep under ground to keep the substance cool so it can't spread as easily. They hardly ever even light torches inside to avoid the chance of igniting it, and create it with a room full of sand above them that will collapse on them to smother the wildfire if it catches while being handled.

She fought her entire life to break out of the predefined gender role given to her, probably faced decades of abuse and torment for doing so, FINALLY earns her place in the king guard and swears an oath to protect Renly until death... and then like a week later fails due to a literal vagina demon, essentially gets framed for his death, and guaranteed an execution if ever captured. I would be screaming and crying too girl 😂

The interesting thing about Brienne is that its not like she's rejecting her role as a noble lady. She just also wants to be seen as a knight and warrior. Which is actually the more transgressive thing about her. And she faced a childhood and teenage years (Brienne is actually about 17 when we meet her in the books) actually surrounded by a loving father and a household who not only accepted her pursuits but gave her a healthy education for it (she apprenticed for her fathers butcher so she could get used to killing and the smell of blood, etc). The one exception was her Septa who called her ugly and said that whatever compliments men would give her would be lies and sadly that would be proven true when she was actually around other knights.

I love the little detail of Loras not believing Brienne was guilty. He clearly had a bit of a beef with her for embarrassing him in the tourney and also getting into the Kingsguard (named the Rainbow Guard in the books, amusingly - not very subtle are you, George?), yet clearly thought better of her then to accuse her of his love's death despite reports saying otherwise. Shows he has at least a professional respect for her, even if he personally did not. (Though in the book he took the death rather worse, but you'll have to read it for yourselves. The books are full of lots of small differences that really change the underlaying narrative and motivations.)

Is this a rare example of straight obliviousness? Brienne: "I only got to hold him the once... after he was dead..." The girls: "Did she just really believe in their cause or something?" Wildfire seems to be based on Greek Fire, which was a mostly unknown liquid made by the Byzantine Empire which burned extreely hot and yes, floated on water whilst burning. It was probably an early formulation of napalm.

Eh, I've seen people miss more glaring things. I don't know what their schedule looks like, if they only watch a single thing a night of if they record in batches, but that can definitely affect overall concentration. Also the fact that you are trying to interact actively with the medium for the reaction to have some additional entertaining value. Also we're (mostly) all watching this with the benefit of having seen it multiple times, also maybe read it. Everybody misses something the first time around. They've missed a few moments here and there, mostly moments where character motivation is explained, or certain details about how certain events happened, but overall it's nowhere close to my personal top missed moments of other reactors, which include being convinced that LotR Orcs are Fungus like 40k Orcs and thinking Anakin's mother was the one to sell him into slavery in Star Wars.

In fairness, they’re probably just thrown off by the fact that Renly is gay and didn’t consider the possibility of unrequited love for someone of the opposite sexual orientation. Plus I guess Brienne so far seems like the type of person who would be more motivated by honor and duty than by romantic feelings. So it’s not _crazy_ crazy that they don’t get it right away. ehhhhhhh. Renly did have a small soft spot for Brienne but more so because he genuinely appreciated her loyalty and devotion. I don't think Renly ever saw himself as an "outsider" to society. Even though he's gay in a hyper masculine warrior culture he's still a lord of a regional power. Brienne is a woman from a lesser house whose existence is open and extremely transgressive for the culture. and if something Loras says afterwards has any weight, Renly privately found Brienne to be "absurd"

College, I come home and find my roommate from Saudi Arabia, a grown man, SOBBING, inconsolable. I asked what was wrong, he told me the King of Saudi Arabia had died. I was confused. He explained to me in the US, you get a new leader every 4 or 8 years, but the King was their leader longer than even his own father had been alive, to him it was just like his dad had passed away. Jaqen (the mysterious man who has just promised Arya to give her three lives) speaks in third person because it is customary in his own - supposed and apparent - homeland of Lorath (one of the "Free Cities" of Essos, whose inhabitants traditionally speak while omitting their own names and using the third person to speak about themselves: "a man will give three lives" etc.). There might also be another reason for his speech mannerism but it's better not to give you possible spoilers... PS: this is not particularly important nor it is related in any way, but apparently also Shae is from Lorath originally, but she does not use that way of speaking (probably because she did not live there long/she assimilated better to the culture and life of Westeros).

The women on this show do absolutely pop off. This show is revolutionary for many things and one of them is because it has all these very powerful uniquely different women roles that feel fresh and organic in this game of thrones world where woman suffer a lot of injustice. And these roles were before they started force feeding woman into powerful roles like they do today. No offense. Just naming the bad ass women characters up until this episode: Cersei, Arya, Yara (Theon’s sister), Dany, Catlyn Stark, Margaery Tyrell, Brienne, Shae, and low key Sansa. That’s 9 unique roles for women that we see many shows and film trying to copy today in a generic lazy manner that just feel very organic and masterfully written in Game of thrones.

She absolutely did care and while in the show its a lot more cloudy, in the books she did have them all killed. She even told Robert to his face, that if he brought his only acknowledged bastard son to Kings Landing, she would have him killed. Why do you think she had his natural children aborted?

Oh I just meant she didn’t care that he made that decision. She was okay with it. The scene she had with Tyrion seemed to make it clear that he made the decision in the show.

@@goldenholdenolden “Renly Baratheon had been more than a king to her. She had loved him since first he came to Tarth on his leisurely lord’s progress, to mark his coming of age. Her father welcomed him with a feast and commanded her to attend; elsewise she would have hidden in her room like some wounded beast” (...) “And Renly Baratheon had shown her every courtesy, as if she were a proper maid, and pretty. He even danced with her, and in his arms she’d felt graceful, and her feet had floated across the floor. Later others begged a dance of her, because of his example. From that day forth, she wanted only to be close to Lord Renly, to serve him and protect him. But in the end she failed him.” She got bullied hard her whole life and her father stopped arranging marriages after 3 betrothals fell through. He was the first person to show her the slightest grace, so she developed a massive crush that turned into fanatical devotion to him. Though, she loved the idea of Renly more than Renly himself, she barely knew him, she certainly didn't know about Loras, and she cried when he married Margaery. Renly himself was always kind to her, but barely. She fell in love with this gay guy because he danced with her, the daughter of the lord he was visiting, and was as properly courteous as is expected of a prestigious lord in such a situation. It didn't take a lot to keep her on the leash (though even if Renly was kind of knowingly taking advantage of her devotion, he did respect her).

@@goldenholdenolden No Brienne was in love with him. Renly showed her common courtesy and validated her choice to live as a warrior. Brienne never acted upon it due to: 1. she takes her vows as a Kingsguard seriously (if the Rainbow Guard even had the no family or lands rule) 2. Her family is noble but not noteworthy enough to warrant her as a possible match for him 3. Even without those two points, she probably wouldn't have acted on it simply because she didn't wish to risk being heartbroken

There is a really cool theory about why Jaqen H'ghar was in the black cells of King's Landing. I think the theory is a solid one and very likely the "truth" of how he ended up in the cells and why he was in the cart going to the Wall.

@@wastingtime9004 , Little Finger had an insurance policy that Ned Stark would die. Little Finger had hired the assassin to kill Ned Stark on his way to the Wall, should Joffrey not behead him. Little Finger wanted Ned dead in order to execute his plans. I'm sure you've heard people tell you that the books are better or that you need to read them, but that's not for everyone. You though? You two are EATING UP the intrigue and the drama. And the show skips A LOT of what the books do with that. The show moves SO FAST compared to the books and only hit some of the good stuff in order to keep a pace that keeps you on your heels with everything that's going on. You two would absolutely love reading the books.

I dont remember if they go into this in the show, but in the books, Brianne was in love with Renly. There was a dance at Brianne's homeland and no one wanted to dance with her, because she was always an ugly girl. Renly took pity on her and danced with her all night. Since that time Brianne's heart was for Renly. I may have gotten the details off a bit, but that's the gist of why Brianne is so committed to Renly. So yes, Brianne was distraught over his death.
