George RR Martin gave some distances early on in the books, but stopped and tended to use hyperbole/vague answers because, as he admits himself, he is absolutely appalling at judging how big things should be, how far things should be, even how old characters should be. He always makes buildings/landmarks way too big, characters way too young, and distances drastically too far for any of the things that exist and happen in the books to be realistic. There have been guesses that the Wall to King's Landing is anything from 700 miles to 4000 miles, and no answer really makes sense. The real landmarks they're based on, Hadrian's Wall and London, are about 320 miles apart, but Westeros is definitely meant to be bigger. And for what it's worth, a pigeon (in our world at least) can fly 600 miles in one flight, non stop, taking roughly 10 hours, which is crazy impressive.

There were mentions that it took a month for King Robert's retinue to travel from King's Landing to Winterfell, and a few other times things like "a fortnight" were mentioned, but in the later seasons those little "throwaway lines" disappeared, so no context was given to how long it would actually take. Just because events took place in the same episode, or from one episode to the next, it doesn't mean they were happening "in real time"... without the context of those casually dropped lines, it's left to the imagination, and the imagination of the fanbase went the "Littlefinger's teleporter" route.

@mandykimmav3 ай бұрын
I don't like the line myself. I don't really like most of the writing in this episode. However, to be fair, pride is the consciousness of one's own dignity. Stannis offered refuge to the Wildlings if Mance kneeled. Mance refused to kneel to Stannis to secure that refuge for the Wildlings because of his personal morality. So even though Mance verbally stated "Fuck my pride", objectively, his action in the end was indeed motivated by his own pride.

I think that, in the show, Gendry says his name is Rivers. But that's probably a mistake. Usually a bastard's name depends on where he/she was born, since Gendry was born in King's Landing, which is part of the Crownlands, he should be Gendry Waters. If the father is from somewhere else, then they might give him/her the bastard surname from the father's land, especially if the kid is sent there to be raised closer to the father. In Gendry's case, If Robert had claimed him, he might be called Gendry Storm (since Robert was from the Stormlands) but Robert never claimed him (probably didn't even know of his existence), so Gendry Waters is probably what he would be called. But there's a chance he never had a surname at all. Most smallfolk don't and since no one knew Gendry's father was a nobleman, he probably wasn't given a surname at all.

Bran has already crossed the wall again though? The Three Eyed Raven and the power of the children is at least part of the power in the wall. Its been holding back the dead for thousands of years, but if the Three Eyed Raven is no longer beyond the wall too? How does that change things? Is the only way to destroy the dead forever is to let them come? And as you said dragons "refused" to cross. There's no evidence I have heard that they CAN'T cross. It's been hundreds of years and clearly Dany (most likely Nissa Nissa) & her dragons are not "normal".

@@orphanedhanyou The last ‘book canon’ episode is Season 5 Episode 10 where Jon Snow dies. Even then, Stannis is alive in the books not marching on Winterfell yet So Bran coming back also shouldn’t have happened because like dragons and other magical beasts they shouldn’t be able to cross the wall because of the magics infused in the walls foundation. The children were chased North by the first men and then the wall was put up by Bran the Builder. I’m pretty certain it’s in ASOIAF lore that dragons cannot pass the wall. Yes Cragen said they refused to, but they refused to because they can’t pass it being magic beasts

There are issues w/ the first 4 episodes of s7, but I think they are among the strongest 4 episode stretch of the series... This episode however.. killed the entire season for me. Don't get me wrong, its got its moments. Great spectacle, some good dialogue, some heart breaking moments. But its just so devoid of logic.. both the setup and the way it ends up going down. The plan itself never made an iota of sense, and then the implausibility of how the events unfold just killed the immersion. They were trying to mash a bunch of ill-fitting puzzle pieces together so they could get an undead dragon. This really is the first time the major set piece moment of the season is based on a plot that makes no sense.

That's when D&D wanted to get it over with ASAP, so they started to ignore the lore, logic, pacing... No dragon is supposed to be able to fly over the wall. The wall was made out of ice and magic, so no magic being was able to cross that threshold. And of course all decisions Tyrion made in season 7 were dumb to begin with (D&D writing)...

Here are some huge absolutely nonsensical plotholes. The wall is magical. It was built to keep out everything supernatural. Not even dragons dare to cross the wall, as we learned in HotD. Dany's dragons don't seem to have a problem with it. It was also said that the wall keeps the dead away. It is impossible for the dead to pass the wall. So why the hell do they go behind the wall to bring a dead man to Cercei? First of all, this dead man can't cross the wall and neither can everyone else, because it's magic. Now we lose a dragon to the dead and it comes back as an undead to destroy the wall, so that the dead can pass the wall, because of plot. Dragons cannot cross the wall and neither can the dead. So if no one does anything, nothing happens. But we have plot and since we are in the penultimate season, we don't give a shit about all lore and logic. We also invent teleportation systems. Where in season 1 it took weeks/months to get from A to B, we now do it in 10 minutes. History repeats itself. Dany is is to John what Rhaenyra is to Deamon. Shouldn't surprise anymore. 😂

"b" isn't so unrealistic. they couldve gotten to him before he mounted the dragon. but "a" is very stupid. the fast travel really made things stupid. i try not to think about it so much for this episode though because besides the fast travel, this was a legendary episode. The dialogue between the boys travelling beyond the wall at the beginning was some of the best in the show. especially because we waiting so long for some of those characters to meet/reunite.

A) Where do they say it was a few hours? Considering how far north they are and that it's finally truly winter, the darkness could be way longer than just 8 hours of sleep we recommend in our regular lives. They never say "we waited x hours or x days". They could've been waiting days. So everyone that jumps to "they waited just as long as the scene that cut away from them took" is ridiculous. B) Jon couldn't risk Drogon getting swarmed C) The wight was tied up, that's how they were carrying him up to this point. He's still tied up on the dragon & they use one of the spikes to attach him to the dragon. Do you just close your eyes and ears when watching?

she only should have brought drogon. he has the plot amour. the fact that an ice spear can hurt a dragon when dragon glass, weapons from Valyria hurt them. It's dumb. Poor Viserion poor Dany.
@orphanedhanyou3 ай бұрын
Your logic doesn't make sense? Regular spears hurt Drogon. Why can't a magical spear hurt Viserion? This is a battle of ice vs fire. Fire isn't just going to win every time.

@@orphanedhanyou spears only hurt dragons if they hit in vulnerable places. The show kinda forgot that. The only reason Aegon's sister wife died was because the people from Dorne shot her dragon in the eye. But dragon skin is like stone essentially. But the writers forgot that just like they forgot lots of other stuff.

this is one of my most hated subplots and episodes, completing the marvelisation of the series, fully sacrificing logic for the sake of spectacle

Why? Another comment complained about the time being short, why Jon didn't just rush onto the dragon, the wight being back to Kings Landing. Another complained about the wall being magic holding back dragons & the dead. But Bran, the Three Eyed Raven, has already crossed the wall though. The magic that went into the wall & to keep magic out was built by the same power of the Raven & the children. And now he has crossed that magical line breaking it. The only way to finally end the army of the dead vs just hold them back is to let them in and finally engage until the Night King is killed. Plus we never hear evidence as far as I know that dragons CAN'T cross the wall. Just that they WON'T. Dany & her dragons clearly are not "normal" anyway. Their eggs were hundreds of years old & stone!

The Night Kings enemy is the The Eyed Raven & all humanity. Killing the non bonded dragon with no rider with a clear straight shot is the better option.
