I sometimes feel that it's just a Westerosi joke when noble houses trace their origins thousands of years ago. It goes like this: -My family is 8000 years old. -That's cute, my is 10000. -Every one knows that my is the oldest, 100000 years to be precise. We've been here before the Children. That's true, I'm not fooling around.

"...from the dynasty that held it by right...."? The Targaryen reign might have been longer but what made their reign any more legit than Robert's aside from the fact that they were the first? In both cases, they took it.
@a4j6y2l96 жыл бұрын
the targaryens didn't just take the iron throne, they founded it. before aegon's conquest the seven kingdoms had always been separate sovereign realms and it was the targaryens that established westeros as a unified power and managed to grow that power over the reign of their dynasty. the targaryens ruled for 300 years and robert seizing the throne and disrupting that stability sparked several nasty wars and a huge issue of succession.

He was a misguided kid who felt he never fit in; He was put in a contrasting position and made some misguided decisions which he has paid the consequences for. I don't wish for anyone to go through what he did. In the books he even says "Lord Eddard kept me close but was never warm to me, because he knew some day he might have to kill me" which shows his position as a glorified hostage, it was a big mistake by Rob to send him to his Father in the first place.

He was willing to tell Robert Baratheon of Joffrey, Myrcella, and Tommen's true parentage, even though he knew that Robert would execute innocent children because of it. Yes, he warned Cersei beforehand, but he also acknowledged that Robert would hut them all even if they ran. What's more, he resigned as Hand of the King because Robert wanted him to help assassinate a pregnant teen aged Daenerys. Why are Tommen and Myrcella less deserving of Ned's discretion? And would Robert have stopped with the Lannister's in King's Landing? What about the innocent children at Casterly Rock? Or in Lannisport? Ned Stark was personally cool with starting a massacre that would outstrip the killing of Robert's bastards in Season 2, and justify it with loyalty to his king/bff. Even with Robert dead, Ned's willingness to expose the Lannister incest secret led to thousands of deaths in the War of the Five Kings. Yet Lyanna's secret had to be kept at all costs. And don't get me started on Howland Reed's cowardly killing of Arthur Dayne and Ned's taking that one to the grave, all the while denouncing Jaime every chance he could for killing a madman who'd murdered Neds father and older brother. Ned was certainly a hypocrite and deserved to be outed for his self-righteous, convenient honor, but his death was still a bit extreme.
@artoriasbenoit6 жыл бұрын
The problem wasn't that he was "stupid" if anything he was one of the first people to find out about Joffrey, the reason why he died is because he wasn't willing to go against his honor, which we see, was his death.

Morally speaking he doesn't deserve it. By simple cause and effect however he totally does. Same with Robb, too stupid and rigid towards law and honor. It could also be argued that their upholding of law and honor is very selfish towards everyone around them. Look at the chaos and destruction caused by them not taking a more utilitarian/pragmatic approach.

Why are people always insisting that he was noble, honest and had honor? Ok, he kept the vows to his sister and broke 1000 other vows. He did not write in the will, what Robert said. He lied to his wife, to his children and pretty much everyone he ever met. So, he did whatever necessary to proect John. But, when other characters do whatever is needed to defend the life of their children, nobody talks about how honourfull this was.

I wouldn't say he deserved it. Even the woman who told him he would regret the choices he made and die for them didn't want him to die. Him dying was just integral to how Martin wanted to move the story along. I like to sit and think of the scenarios if Ned never died there. The things he would be able to make right and change and how the story would have gone. To me, he still is the best character in all of Thrones. That's why even 6 seasons later, his impact is still felt.
