Not a stretch at all. GRRM has said that Sam from the Night's Watch is in fact based on and meant to be a homage to Sam from The Lord of the Rings. He's one of the very few genuinely good people in this story.

Pippin the Hobbit is represented by Pypar (Pyp), and Merry is represented by Eddison (Dolorous Edd). Dolorous as antonym to Merry.

There is a pretty cool Easter Egg in the opening credits you might like. Pause on the iron rings that circle the golden globe. The first time, there is a dragon. The second time, there is a wolf, lion and stag (maybe more, it's been a while since I've watched) attacking the dragon. In the last scene, there is a wolf, lion and a bear (again, maybe others) bowing to a crowned stag. The three scenes depict Robert's Rebellion.

I wrote a short story as a kid about a brave knight rescuing a princess from an evil wizard named Izadork, Gandoof could've been a great assistant to Izadork. Lol

Heres an easy Lord of the Rings connection. Whats the name of Jon Snows best friend? Sam. But in actuality, the books were inspired by the real life event known as "The War of the Roses." It was a war in England that took place over sevearl decades. Mostly between the houses of Lancastor(Lanister) and York(Stark). It ended with the start of the Tudor dynasty that put Henry the 7th, Henry the 8ths father on the thrown. He became king by defeating and killing Richard the 3rd of Shakespear fame, in battle.

George RR Martin added the second r to his name because his hero is JRR Tolkien. And Sam is the bestie in The Lord of the Rings as well as Game of Thrones. You can also see the borrowed some things from the movie Dragonslayer (1981).

There were things said or done that will make more sense or have a bigger impact later in the show. Sometimes within the same season. Sometimes it takes several seasons. That being said, the show really is best watched a second time to catch all these little hints and portends.
