@@ambermargheim5726 they never replied so.. what I gather is they are saying the game collects data on what items you spend time looking at the most (as in want as rewards) and uses that data to hardly ever give you those items,in an attempt to keep you coming back and trying over and over. But, I doubt its that deep and just low odds or random timer, and a big selection pool, limits you getting EXACTLY what you want when you DO hit for a rare item.

Considering a lot of teachers are limited to what they can teach and schools(as well as overworked and underpaid), it's very unlikely that we'll see much change in that regard. Especially when the people running the schools also have an agenda to remain in power and fill their pockets. If anything, parents need to start teaching this stuff at home. People need to teach their families, friends and so on. It's gotta be a community-based education, instead of an institution- based one.

Oh if I ever have kids, believe me they will get some teaching above and beyond their schoolwork from home. However, it is easier to spread any knowledge from an institutional level, so getting some help on that front would be good. Something that I would love to do if I could get J.K. Rowling to sign off on it is to create an extracurricular program covering CB and LF and throw in some mindfulness meditation and call it Occlumency... Would've been more effective when I was in high school during the height of Potter mania but still it could be worth it to try lol

Easier way to explain: If you have ever heard of the Toys "Gold Digger" or "Diamond Digger" then basically yeah, but if you don't, it's basically a hard block of dirt in a sort of shape (ex: diamond, block, etc.), anyways, you have to dig inside to see what you get; and you have to try to get 1 piece of Gold or Diamond, Each Block has 1 type of mineral/rock, and if you're very lucky, you'll get the diamond or gold depending on what Digger Toy it is. They make you try to get stuff that your mind desires, which means you try to buy as many as Digger Toys as you can so you can get the item you wanted. You keep wasting your money until you get what you want.

Lootboxes are very nasty manipulation, and psychologically can be equated to slot machines.... Except with slot machines, you often get something in return... With Loot Boxes, you get digital trash... which in a number of years will be useless...

You rarely get anything back, coins maybe but most of the time you spent more than you won. With lootboxes, it may be digital stuff, but you get to keep that on your account, even if it is just garbage. You ALWAYS get SOMETHING, and you never lose. You just don't necessarily always get what you want.

Being a psychology major I completely understand all of this. And it deeply saddens me that Nintendo is pulling these greedy shenanigans. They recently got involved in making their own mobile games with micro-transactions and now even AAA titles like their new super Mario All-Stars featuring super Mario 64, super Mario sunshine, and super Mario galaxy but only for a limited time exclusive! They added scarcity to make you feel like you have to buy it while you can! Back in the 90s with the original super Mario All-Stars, there was none of that garbage. It was just a collection of great games on one cartridge! Those were the days!

Honestly I don't understand how they make so much money off of the loot boxes. Never once have I even considered paying real life money for loot boxes in any game. They have only ever struck me as an annoying and shallow reward system. For example, within my first 5 hours of CS:GO, I was lucky enough to get one of those $17 crates. I didn't even for a second think of opening it. I just went on the steam market and sold it, essentially paying off my game for me. In PUBG, Rocket League, Shadow of War, Overwatch, Halo 5 and many many more over the past few years you will not find a single purchase of loot boxes or any other of the sort. To me, I buy the game, I play the content, and I push through any stupid reward system they've implemented. Don't get me wrong, I'd much prefer getting rid of loot boxes entirely in favor of a more fair and better reward system, all I'm saying is that I really don't understand how people can spend hundreds of dollars just trying to get in game virtual skins. It almost ruins the whole "being proud" aspect of the reward systems in favor of "I spent the most money so I look the coolest". Anyways, if you actually read this far thanks for reading my nonsensical rambling and I hope that you agree.

It's not just a "nonsensical rambling" tough. There are a lot of games that make all their profit on what we call "Whales", which are the few players willing to spend hundreds or thousands of dollars on the games' store. In short, most companies that rely on loot boxes already expect that 85% of their playerbase don't spend a single penny on loot boxes, 10% could just buy one or two boxes for various reasons, but that remaining 5% of the playerbase, the whales, will give enough money to make their profit.

I read your comment and I completely agree. I've never paid for any microtransactions ever and I actually sorta like loot boxes in games because they actually give you an incentive to continue playing. Battlefield Hardline was one of my favorite games but it was only fun until I unlocked everything and I was like... what goal do I have now? Then I realized that I didn't get the same dopamine rush after each match that I did with games like Halo 5 where you get 3 free daily boxes.

I just came from the Game Theory Candy Crush video. In my comment, I mentioned the skinner box. In thins video the skinner box is fully explained. That is great. Actually all of the stuff in this loot box video also applies to Candy Crush. There is a reward of leveling up whenever one beats a game. It is a randomized reward, because the candy that appears in the squares is random. There is a little bit of skil and strategy required to match candy, which gives an illusion of choice. The early game is very easy to win. One gains a lot of levels right away. It is an incentive. It is also a sunk cost in the sunk cost fallacy. It is more tempting to play Candy Crush for too long instead of quit because one doesn't want to waste that sunk cost of gaining the levels. I think the lootboxes in a video game is similar to that in a slot machine. It is a randomized reward that hacks the brain. I think there may be something else like that. The game I am currently playing is Magic the Gathering Arena. It has virtual booster packs. They can be bought with virtual currency. Getting the currency can be done by completing in game actions or by paying real world money. Each pack has a set of randomized virtual cards. These cards are used to build a collection and used in a deck for play. If one is building a deck, they are after very specific cards. So they open lots of booster packs to get them. So it is basically a randomized reward. Opening a booster pack always comes with an animation of the cards bursting out of the pack with a burst of light. Once I watch the video, I see that it really shoots up the dopamine. It doesn't matter what is in the pack. The animation happens anyway. The virtual booster packs is like the game equivilent to loot boxes. Yet it is also just like the traditional booster packs for the traditional Magic the Gathering game. It is not just Magic that does this. I remember the Pokemon card game doing the same thing. It seems that TCGs in general do randomized booster card packs. I think this is probably something a lot like gambling and loot boxes. There is a connection here. Maybe booster card packs are not ethical. It kind of disturbs me that children aquire them. I wonder if anybody ever pointed this out. I wonder if the government will ever make booster packs illegal. That is something to ponder.

A fun example of this working a bit too well comes from a browser game called Granblue Fantasy. Basically, there's this Japanese guy that wants to get a specific unit named Andira. She's extremely limited (appears 6-12 times a year) but also quite strong, and this man is determined to get her. He sets up a stream and starts rolling on the banner. Fast-forward quite a few minutes later and he's about 6,500 dollars (you get 10 draws from the gacha for every pull, and each pull costs 3000 yen or 25 dollars) in. He still has not pulled Andira. Despite having already wasted a large amount of money, the guy was fully willing to continue throwing money at the game, only stopped by his bank blocking his card under the premise that his card had been compromised by someone. The funny thing about this incident was that the developer of Granblue Fantasy, Cygames, actually got government attention for how well their system works and had to put a system in place to prevent this. Now, for every 30 pulls you do (which is 300 draws), you get a free character of your choice from that banner. It completely fucked over the way they pulled off the sunk cost fallacy, as now everyone just saves up 300 pulls to get whatever they want.

There must be something wrong with my brain... I always hated surprises and randomness. I always felt that they are stupid and unfair. For example: birthday presents. I don't know what I will get and since I don't know I feel annoyed and frustrated, because I could get something I don't need and/or want which means that people I care about wasted their time and/or money. Same with magic. I hate so-called "magic" performers. Illusions, tricks... not for me. My brain considers these people cheaters, dishonest tricksters. I hate that feeling and I also hate gambling. I see no point in even bothering since you could waste your time and money. It doesn't matter that you can win something big from time to time. If a proper reward is not certain I'm out of the situation. I'm not a gambler, I guess. My brain must be damaged.
