The ultimate frustrating irony is that as a video editor, despite using music to enhance the watcheability of a video, when editing narration or speech, it's almost impossible to focus on someone's cadence or timing or natural speech patterns while jamming out to your favorite grooves. A lot of days I have to work in silence just because of all the spoken words I gotta stitch together smoothly and add musical accents after. But if i had chill vibes in the background, it would take me twice as long to string together coherent and smooth sounding sentences.

So little story before Covid hit I was taking piano lessons. Right when it hit I stopped playing for about two years. Then one day in 2022 I got motivation to just go to the piano and play random notes. Those “random notes” were actually the notes to play silent night. I still remember even doing this kind of testing on myself just to see if it could help me perform better in games and surprisingly enough, it kind of does. Personally, it seems sort of genre specific too. Lo-Fi tends be a go-to genre for me when I'm doing something else or I'm in a bad mood, but when trying to play games it gets me too mellow and I start underperforming slightly. But turn on something like rock, metal, electronic, anything that's louder with a more defined beat and I start to feel more active and alert; making my reactions and aim a bit better. Of course, this is probably different for everyone. But it's cool to learn all the things the brain is influenced by.

I love this one because music really helps my ADHD, ADD, and Anxiety. See, my counselor said my ADHD and ADD feeds into my Anxiety because it's a stimulant, and that in turn causes more anxiety. 😵 But when I started taking medication and using music, it stopped the loop and I can focus on bigger tasks much better. 😁

They way music interacts with the brain is fascinating. I once had a concert where our pianist had a stroke just before we started. She completely forgot where she was, and even started to go home. Once we got her back on stage, though, she played as if nothing had happened. She didn't recognize any of us, but her performance was completely unaffected. She was still recovering for years afterwards, and last I'd heard was mostly better, but nothing shows just how differently music is retained in the brain.

@@roomyhaddock3245 That is the most likely conclusion, but what gets me is the phrase "negative music," which seems to imply that "negitive" is an intrinsic property of that music, rather than a subjective one. It would be nice to read the original source, to see if this phrasing was a way to summarize the findings in this episode's script, or if the study itself has this vague wording.

I can confirm that music does indeed improve your exercise. I remember distinctly listening to DOOM music while on a treadmill and going 8 mph for half an hour straight with little to no feelings of fatigue. Thank you for talking about this cool as heck subject!

I wonder if that increased walking ability have to do also with the feeling when your really jiving and you literally feel the urge to move. I started wiggling and grooving at my desk and even find myself typing to the rhythm.

one thing that I have noticed is that matpat missed out on a detail. there is a rhythm game in dyslight itself, and in when you unlock mona, there is some dialogue where discoboom says that she is helping her resolve through the power of music

Hell yes! Lovin’ this theory; seriously Lilith Games, get on that mind control plot line. Also loving the game myself. I agree with Matt that Drew is cool and swave, but my favourite would have to be Bennie aka Bastet; gotta love that shield ability! Also love how her moves and personality fit so well with her origins as a fun protector goddess. Although… hey Lilith Games, if you’re reading this, could you throw in some other pantheons plz? Would love to see some gods from Japanese, Aztec, West African and Celtic folklore.

The second half of this theory reminds me of an episode of Nova. They used similar science to manipulate the reasoning patterns of test subjects. Testers were exposed to a story (two men are making coffee. Person 1 asks person 2 to make his coffee. Person 2 puts poison in 1’s coffee and normal sugar in his own. When giving the coffees, they get mixed up and 1 receives the safe coffee and 2 is killed) and asked to assess the morality of person 2. I don’t remember the specifics, but they used powerful electromagnets to turn off the section of the brain that assumes he poisoned the coffee intentionally, and the results were comprehensive

I listen to music before playing basketball and it kinda unlocks something... your brain works better you don't hold back, you react better if not faster (unfortunately the body still can be a hindrance to your mind if you're not working it out)
