as a mushroom nerd, the bleeding tooth fungus was my first choice for toad, because, as you mentioned, red w/ white spots and white w/ red spots is a very important distinction when speaking about mushrooms. I assumed the twist was going to be that toad and toadette aren't the same species, given that toadette is (colour) with white spots and toad is whit with (Colour) spots. they're incompatible, they're different mushrooms. lowkey disappointed this wasn't mentioned. :/

In fairness, going into the Mat types was interesting and is the kinda stuff I originally subscribed to this channel for.
@tarrenp40212 жыл бұрын
I think he emphasized the bleeding tooth fungus as this was the original design for toad(s) and was hoping to find property basics for the species, rather than assert that every toad, despite being identical in almost any way, is completely different. Red toads are shown to have children with blue toads in canon, etc, so this may be the reason he didn't go down that route.

Toad with hair is not too uncommon so Toadette is probably just one particular Toad. I mean its not too surprising for Toads to name themselves.
@hencethebeetroot2 жыл бұрын
@@UltraAryan10 Toadettes have other differences though: the ponytails - which notably appear to be made of the same material as their cap instead of the more human-like hair seen on Toads - and their color scheme (which is a color with white spots, as opposed to white with colored spots). They're not drastic differences, but they're differences nonetheless, leading me to believe that Toads and Toadettes are related, but still distinct, species.

And to add on to that, Toads don't always stay as one color. In Paper Mario: The Origami King, somewhere along Picnic Road (IIRC), there is a pile of leaves where you can find a Toad. If you talk to him, he would complain that because he was in the leaves for too long, his colors changes. This means, if color (and, as some others have pointed out, patterns) denote a mating type, it means Toads are VERY type-fluid. Now I'm sure it was played up for laughs but that could show more aspects of Mushroom Kingdom society.

Something I'd like to point out: specifically about Toads and their names. Generally, generic Toads are given names based on their color.(ex: Blue/yellow Toad). But there is only one toad named Toad(usually called the most dedicated servant of Peach, especially after Toadsworth's disappearance). He has a white head, red spots, and a blue jacket: a classic toad look, but sometimes toads prefer jackets the same color as their head. It's specified many times, although I wouldn't be surprised if it were ignored several times(for example, all of the toads in Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon are called Toad until you meet them). Similarly, we generally only see one Toadette. Same with Captain Toad(who I suspect is the same person as Toad) and Toadsworth. I think Toadette is simply another toad who has a specific style: a main character among toads, if you will. Also, I've never delved into the original Mario lore, but from the evidence Matpat showed in the video, there are only nine "Mushroom Retainers." Probably just the world development just invalidating previous lore, but it makes sense to me.
@DaNintendude2 жыл бұрын
Captain Toad is a different Toad than the main Toad. As we see in the Galaxy games, Captain Toad is a red-vested Toad. And his personality is fairly different than the main Toad as well. Captain/Explorer Toadette is the main Toadette, and this is backed up by references in other games. But Captain Toad himself is a different Toad than Toad. Another interesting thing is that Toads can possibly change their cap color. The Toad you can play as in Super Mario 3D World isn't Blue Toad from the NSMB series, he's just the main Toad with blue spots. I believe we see a Toad in a modern Paper Mario game claim that his cap color changed as well. And it's possibly based on where they live.

That's sample bias. There are only a few couples shown here. Statistically most toads don't have pigtails. On a meta level it's because the rpgs are more concerned with unique character designs (or used to be before nintendo made that against the rules) but in universe pigtailed toads are uncommon and therefore most toad relationships don't include a pigtailed toad.

One mistake that I'm surprised about: Toadette is not a type of Toad. Toadette is a character like Toadsworth is a character, like Mario is a character. What I mean is there are no such thing as "Toads and Toadettes", just "Toads and Toadette". Toadette is just one Toad who has dressed up as a girl.
@locklecuyer59262 жыл бұрын
I mean... toadette has a different cap so it must be a different kind of toad, like the color, its not like it can just grow pigtails out of mushroom

@@locklecuyer5926 Who said the color and pigtails are natural? Since there are no other Toads like Toadette, the reasonable conclusion is that she made those modifications.

One thing you missed about Toad's colors: in Captain Toad when you get hit, you become a small Captain Toad, and the colors on the cap get reversed: it's white spots on red base. So it still could be a Fly Agaric
