That's exactly what happened. Matt says in the new video that he doesn't actually believe that these theories are cannon, they're just meant to get people to think in new, creative ways. I kind of feel bad for matpat here. He was obviously very excited about this theory, and put a lot of effort into it. When he saw all the refrences to earthbound, it activated his "theorist senses", even though what he was seeing weren't clues, but just earthbound refrences. This theory was made back when little was known about the game, so I think he didn't have that much of the counterevidence we have today.

I think one major thing against it is that this theory is based off of the Earthbound Halloween hack something that Toby had already disagreed with upon Undertale's release. This is due to thing in it like slurs and general edginess. Now this I'm not sure of but when Mat went on the defensive, he said himself he didn't believe this theory but like I said, I remember it, but I could be wrong. Honestly though the biggest problem was taking on the Undertale fan base at the games release, they were of... dubious quality I'll say.

If I state that Pikachu could be a Chipmunk, then add that it has fur like them and walks on both feet but also on all fours like them, that's not a theory, that's just a dumb correlation debunked by basic facts (i.e Pikachu is described as a _mouse_ monster). That's the problem with MatPat. He's known for theories, but he spreads the idea that a theory is just a bunch of dumb guesses regardless of the truth. A theory is an attempt at finding the truth, otherwise it's not a theory. Now I don't know about the backlash he got for this specific video, maybe it was violent, but that certainly won't make me defend his theories when those are dumb.

There are A TON of Mother references in Undertale that weren't mentioned in this video, and many of the tracks in the game are also callbacks to some of the songs in particularly Earthbound (Mother 2). Toby Fox has also worked on several Mother spinoffs, especially in the music department, besides the Halloween Hack one mentioned in this video. I noticed the reference right when I first saw Papyrus' battle design, which was a cool feature, until I saw his stance. That threw me for a loop. What interesting games linked together, if only subtly.

When MatPat made this theory, he… was introduced to the latter. Needless to say, it was a big, bitter surprise that takes a moment to shake off. Then it happened again. 2 blows… But he kept his held up high, and now here we are today.

I enjoyed the video and the theory a lot but there were some definite liberties taken, like how would Frisk recognize Sans as Ness in the picture? Also Ness's warp ability involves him running like a human Dolorian or Epoch to build up speed for the jump in Earthbound, so he only uses it to travel long distances and he certainly can't "blink" around the way Sans does. I also think that Papyrus is a little too invested in the culture of the Underground to be a rogue Starman - even one with a goofy, friendly disposition. If anything it's more likely that Sans/Ness had a Starman uniform with him when he arrived in the Underground and Papyrus simply took a liking to it.
