There's a better explanation for the Yoshi's having many colors. It's not camouflage, it's anti-camouflage. Look at lemurs, for example. They live on the island of Madagascar, where their only natural predator is the fossa. Standing out and finding each other is more valuable for them than hiding, so they're quite vibrant. There are many different kinds because on a small island the winning strategy is to specialize on certain kinds of food, which is exactly what Yoshis do -- different colored Yoshis get more benefit from the fruits that correspond to their color in Yoshi's Story.

It's more likely a Lakitu shell. It's completely smooth and the visible part is red. It's possible that the pattern is either drawn on by Lakitu to the shell so that swirl is a gang symbol for Bowser's army so Yoshi either wiped it off or Mario's Mama Mia wiped it off as he was riding.

And to make a quick note on the "adaptation" thing, since Mr Pat is giving an abbreviated short hand version of it. Creatures don't grow things for a purpose. They don't suddenly realize "hey, I'd like to swim, let's grow fins." Instead, mutations happen randomly, and within a given population some mutations lead to lesser amounts of death compared to others (assuming the entire species isn't wiped out). Because there's less death within that "gene group," they are able to breed more, as well as last longer, leading to those genes becoming more prominent. And these genes must be beneficial (or at least not detrimental) at each step of the way, which is why you don't see animals growing wheels. Even if an animal started down the path of turning their legs in to biological wheels, it's wouldn't provide a benefit until it's completely mutated, while likely totally crippling their ability to move in the mean time.

Chantal E. I didn’t really like this theory as it feels like he just looked at more popular animals. Yoshi would more accurately be an early Abelisaurid. They have 4 fingers, have osteoderms which are just large bony scales, have blunt and round skulls, and still have arms with a functional elbow unlike later Abelisaurids.

I think this is a good theory! I think it’s also worthwhile to point out that in Japanese dinosaurs (恐竜- Kyōryū) are often referred to as dragons (竜- Ryū), so the earlier examples of Yoshi being referred to as a dinosaur could have been simply mistranslations.

That's a good theory, and possibly the case in some instances, however, in the original Japanese they call him a dragon using katakana, even at 7:29 the part matpat highlighted says dinosaur land, in the sentence before that it refers to Yoshi as a dragon (in katakana). A rough translation of that first sentence that I did was; "the dragon introduced himself as Yoshi and started speaking to Mario." and then goes to say; "recently in dinosaur land, a turtle creature has appeared." (that's the part he highlighted)

My theory: Yoshi is a Ceratosaurian. Why? Yoshis have a big nose, plates, and 4 fingered arms. Almost all in the ceratosaurian family have weird head ornamentals, osteoderms (plate like decorations on their back), and 4 fingered arms. Yoshi has smooth skin, and thus is not scaly. Plus, in the specific descriptions given in the video, all of the other options had scales as well - this was simply referring to things like thicker hide and protruding plates that could ward off enemies.

God of the Cripples I think it depends. Some of his theories, like the ness is sans theory, are probably just for fun and meant to be taken with a grain of salt. But if he cares about the theory, like all his fnaf ones, I tend to find that they’re more well put together and well researched. However there are theories that aren’t as well researched, and you can tell, like his one ace attorney one. At least he’s willing to admit his mistakes though or make light of it instead of backpedaling and trying to assert himself. In general though, I guess that’s the point of his motto, “it’s just a theory”. He can try to come up with something plausible, but they’re bound to have holes or be incomplete. They won’t ever be true unless word of god confirms it.
