My dad was in a near fatal car accident in his early 20's that left him brain damaged, I never knew what he was like before since I was only a year old when it happened, but when I saw basically the same thing happen to Charmy in the comic it cut DEEP. His role as the most OP character in Knuckles Chaotix reminds me of Cream and her role in Sonic Advance 2. The character who is youngest (and therefore closest in age to the target audience) and makes the game easiest to play (seriously play Sonic Advance 2 as Cream, she can beat the final boss WITHOUT MOVING)

You know when you think about it charmy and shadow’s back story is kinda the same. Both started out with family which is lost during a militaristic raid, are sealed in a pod, and experienced something that sent them over the edge for at least a short period of time. In shadow’s case watching a little girl (who was also the only person to treat him as an actual being with emotions) be murdered by a grown adult with a gun and then be put in stasis for a very long time by the very same people who murdered her. Which just writing this out sounds ridiculously morbid.

They do eventually get genuinely good, but they have a very, very rough transitional period. After the original Robotnik dies (Issue 50), things go off the walls insane until Ian Flynn takes over and does clean up. Whenever I recommend Archie Sonic to folks, I usually tell them to watch the SatAM series (that way you can properly get attached to the Freedom Fighters), read issues 1-50, and then skip to issue 160, and just Google some of the important bits you've missed while you read onwards. It's not a perfect solution but honestly, unless you're a masochist like me who must consume EVERYTHING, you probably won't want to put yourself through what some of the writers cooked up.

[Lupintic Dream] Linguine I can never say the storytelling went down after issue 50. It definitely immediately went downhill when Sega forced Archie to adapt Sonic Adventure 1. You can just tell from the writing they were not prepared to do that. There are a couple stories I like after that train wreck. The 1st Metal Sonic having a change of heart and melting in the lava(later brought back as Shard), the Overlanders coming back(The concept of the story, not how it was actually written) and Return to Angel Island. Before Ian Flynn came into the book. And I know it was poorly handled but I still like the potential of Anti-Antione’s story.

I like the premise and even the writing to a certain degree, and I do think Jonathan Gray is a very talented artist, however I feel his overly exaggerated artwork at that point in time did not bode well for said writing. It was just a little distracting, for me at least. I'll give you Shard though. It was very cool when they did that psuedo-adaptation of Metal Sonic's death from the OVA, and how that would eventually lead into the development of Shard and his growth as a character. I really wish Shard stuck around for the post-Super Genesis Wave, but I guess Sega doesn't like the idea of there being more than one Metal Sonic, or Metal Sonic having an actual personality (even though they would later allow Captain Metal to exist)? Regardless, I would've liked to see his relationship with Nicole developed further. Really missed a golden opportunity there.

Tbh I don't think Charmy is "hated" he's just kinda "there", I mean I remember folks complaining about Cream not being in recent Sonic games yet I didn't hear anyone complain about Charmy not being in TSR. Unfortunately he is just a quota character that's part of the chaotix but has very little substance as an individual (in Sonic rivals 2 you can play as Espio with Vector being in a support role yet Charmy wasn't in that game at all and tbh I didn't miss him). Tl;dr he's just your typical unpopular (but not hated) character whose appeal pales in comparison to other more prominent and/or more defined characters (in a franchise with such a large cast).

I think you will find the difference between Cream and Charmy is that at one point Cream was part of the main group and her absence in that group dynamic has become very obvious to people in the last few years. There are a lot of Sonic fans that became a fan during them times, me included, so it is a little weird seeing her being excluded. Especially since they replaced her with Chao in TSR explaining the reason she isn’t in it is because she is a child. I find that excuse a little poor though considering over half the characters are kids themselves. Oh people did complain the Chaotix wasn’t a team in it though. People have been asking for the Sonic heroes groups back for a while now 😅

I have heard about the brain damage, but I never knew how bad the poor bee's life got in the comics. I personally never minded Charmy's antics nor did I find him annoying. I've heard some people say it's because of his voice, but I never really minded his English actors. That said, from what I have listened to, I really enjoy Charmy's seiyuu (or Japanese voice actor), Yoko Teppouzuka's preformance. She does an excellent job making Charmy sound adorable! That aside, I really enjoyed the video! It was fun learning about how the character was written and treated through different comics!

Even though I prefer Ian Flynn by miles, I still like many of the things Penders put into the Archie Sonic world as well and I loved his Knuckles the Echidna series (the Dark Legion is probably the only thing I think Penders wrote better than Flynn). STC in hindsight was just a downright cynical take on the franchise, almost a Family Guy approach to writing them. Nearly everyone was either an on the nose jerk or they were a punching bag for one. Only exception was Amy and Teckno and that's only because feminist executives demanded they put up a good example. Sure Sonic, Knuckles and the Chaotix would often ULTIMATELY do the right thing, but they sure would go that contemptuous extra mile to hide any smidgeon of a heart. I mean us Brits definitely love our sarcasm, even our warmest kids shows tend to have it to some playful degree, but I really feel like a lot of the US' attempts to have a 'likeable' edge and 'attitude' did not translate well here.

I knew there were some crazy stuff happening in the Archie comics, but I didn’t expect things to get that crazy and sad when it came to a character like Charmy. A part of me can see why Sega can get strict when it came to the Post-Genesis Wave stuff and currently on the IDW comic series. For me, Charmy is just a pure little kid character that I don’t mind. He can get annoying at times like a little kid can be, but he usually doesn’t mean any harm when he gets into trouble for the most part. I kinda like his naivety in the IDW stories. Kinda highlighted in the middle of the Metal Virus arc, with him really not liking that they couldn’t save everyone in the city he’s in. Which sadly resulted in him being one of the first to get infected. A part of me is kinda surprised that there doesn’t appear to be much moments between him and Cream yet though. With both of them being the youngest of the main Sonic roster and all. A nicely informative video you did here overall. His premier in the old Sonic Manga definitely looks weird so far.

Charmy is one of my favorite adorable characters, He is like the Little brother to Vector and Espio. I blame the Heroes and 4kids voices, they were trying to make him annoying on purpose. I like his current Voice who is also the current voice to Tails, Colleen made Charmy more tone down but still cheerful and kid like, he is playful yes but also very loyal to his friends and is willing to do the right thing. Charmy, Vector, and Espio are like family to each other.

In fairness with Archie, I feel they could have gotten away with just slipping in a kooky side of Charmy akin to the games. A lot of the SEGA cast slowly evolved to act more like modern selves in the comics. They ditched 'street talk' Vector for his Bronx detective gimmick after all and no one batted an eye. Hell was Espio even a ninja originally? Archie Charmy did always feel a bit childlike anyway, a bit wide eyed, even if not in a sort of bratty way. Some people act younger than their age.

I also have another issue with “Charmy gets brain-damage” plot point, as Flynn did the same thing about 10 issues prior with Ixis Naugus (which is a whole other problem, but not very relevant right now), and Flynn would establish MULTIPLE times that Chaos Emeralds can restore memories and fix brain-damage. So why no one ever logically thought to use a Chaos Emerald on their old friend Charmy is completely unknown to me. Either they forgot or they truly hate him more than the STC characters 😂😂😂😂

...yeesh. Y'know, I was never very familiar with the Chaotix. I only knwlew what I saw from S3&K, the 3 first episodes from Sonic X, and not much else. So when I saw the intro cutscene from Sonic Generations, my first thought was "Wait, who's this crocodile dude? Is that a bee with a helmet? What's the purple, horned guy even supposed to be?!" Because of that, the Chaotix always stuck out to me as just sort of... there. Like, an extra cast of sorts. I couldn't even believe that they were already present during the Classic Era! But, as time went by, these guys started to grow on me. I dunno, I started to like their chemistry as a family of sorts. But these videos, especially this one... damn if my respect for them hasn't increased a lot more. Thanks for that, Nick. Toot toot, Apologist.
