Here's a tip for you guys: Next time you wanna play a game, do a test play beforehand. Research it a little. Try to know what you're doing when you pick up the controller. Doing blind gameplays can be fun and all, but not knowing what you're doing can lead to the video becoming a little frustrating to watch, specially when you've been doing many blind gameplays lately. I'm not saying that you should master all the games you play, just... try to know how to actually play it first, okay? Show that you care just a little for the outcome of your gameplay, even if it's not the top score. Hanging out with your friends and playing games together is awesome, but it makes things even better to see you do well in a game along with the fun you're having.

When he goes for the downwards strike with his left/right he opens his mouth you give a punch to the face then when he covers his face punch him in the stomach a bunch. Second time around is trickier because you have to hit the tape to take out his belt/guard

It is. Also unique to this game is the ability to recover health by waggling the Wiimote while an opponent is knocked down, the ability to NOT fall down when about to be knocked out by waggling the Wiimote, and the ability to recover a ton of health once per match from eating Doc's chocolate between rounds (by pressing the minus button) are all new features I wouldn't expect them to know, but I'm hoping they figure out. There is also no tutorial for this shit. At least I don't think there is.

If you watch the NES Punch Out episodes again, Dan doesn't ever duck there, either, because it was never really required. I think he's just simply unaware that a Duck maneuver exists and is playing it how he played the original Punch Out. In any case, he'll either stumble on the Duck move or muscle through it, whatever's fine.

Ok a few things and please give it a thumbs up so they can read it. 1. press buttons when you knock someone down to regain life. 2. press start (I think) between rounds and Doc will eat a candy bar and you will regain life. 3. Save up your star punches and for super punch. 4. If you get knocked out press buttons really fast before Mac hits the ropes and you will stay up for one more knock down (sometimes). And 5. Okay, so, I did it last episode, I'll do it here, too. Grump Tips. +1 me so that the Grumps might be able to see this if they don't do one whole session. 1: You can duck down. I don't know why Danny didn't try it after Arin said it, but whatever, it's important. 2: When Little Mac is going through his KO animation, you can repeatedly press 1 and 2 as fast as possible, and there's a slight chance that he'll catch himself before he falls on his knees, and still be in the fight. 3: I'm glad to see Danny is showing some progress with this, but the ultimate Punch-Out strategy is and will always be dodging and THEN punching. 4: This is out to all the Lovelies: Calm down. Punch-Out is a game that teaches you about what you have to do the more that things become a challenge. It doesn't throw all the tactics and extra abilities you have at you at once, because it wants to scale itself to your level of understanding. I had beaten the entire first play-through before I knew about the Chocolate, Restoring Health, and being able to get back up in the KO animation, and it took me a very long time to understand the Dodge-n'-Counter tactics, and especially to duck down on King Hippo. It took me less time, however, because I was by myself, focused on the game specifically, and not doing a game show for thousands upon possible millions of people. Chill. You're going to have to deal with this. That's how Punch-Out works, and Danny is going to have a hard time with it because of all these other factors. The best thing that you can do is see comments like this and bring them to the top so that the grumps might see them if they choose to put this game down for a while, which considering the game Punch-Out it, they almost definitely will. They're not stupid, they're distracted. So let's teach them what to do when that distraction finally catches up with them and they need some advice.

Zeromega159 that was the first punch out for the nes, in which ducking wasn't a thing... ducking was introduced in super punch out for the snes and was key to dodging hay-makers, wide hooks and such.

Dan didn't know that you can punch Hippo's face whenever his mouth is open, even after he misses a punch. Doesn't figure out that he can duck, at all. Even a single hint would have helped him here, but through all chance, Doc decided to be ZERO help in this fight. Can't really blame Danny for that.

Why the air-quotes? Go watch his other Punch-Out playthrough; he destroys that fucking game. (expand for discursive design analysis) If he's ignoring the "duck" button (you actually block, don't duck, but...whatever), it's because, in the NES game, 99 times out of a hundred doing so is fucking useless. It reduces your already-limited hearts (which, given the way the fatigue mechanic works, is a major deterrent to doing anything which reduces your hearts), makes you "safe" for fewer frames than a dodge does, and can't negate most special boss-punches (as a dodge can). And because you don't KNOW which punches it can block and which it can't, that makes using it uncertain, risky, and not worth the trouble. In effect, the block button is rendered a kind of redundant alternate-dodge ability, the use of which is required rarely, and the effects of which are inconsistent and unpredictable. There are only a handful of very specific punches from very specific bosses which even require you to block to withstand them. And y'know what? They're famously difficult, and players get stuck on them, because it's calling on you to use a skill the rest of the game doesn't engage with much. There's a reason so many NES players got stuck on Great Tiger -- because surviving his teleport-punch requires you to block well, and up until that point in the game, there's a pretty good chance you haven't been blocking much at all...because, due to the way the game is designed, blocking is fucking useless, and there's been no need to do so. /designrant

Everything and anything is "on" the game. Games are interactive; communication between player and game is a two-way street. If Punch-Out wants you to know when to block, it should have designed blocking to function more usefully and in a more predictable, explicable manner. You can't "get good" at blocking in Punch-Out; all you can do is memorize which specific punches from which specific bosses it works on, and which it doesn't. By way of comparison, look how blocking is taught (and then utilized) in Dark Souls. They tell you how to use it, it works on most attacks (even boss attacks) depletes your stamina in a way that's straightforward and intuitive, and so you stick it in your tool-belt with all the other abilities the game has taught you, and use it regularly. To put it another way, let's imagine a hypothetical example. Let's say I design a first-person shooter, with all the normal controls, but when you press A, instead of jumping, you curl into a little ass-ball. The actual use of the ass-ball ought to be to dodge attacks -- but every time you use it, it depletes your already-limited ammo, and you never have any way of knowing which attacks it'll successfully dodge or not. It's totally random. You'd probably wouldn't use the ass-ball button very much, because its use is unpredictable and that unpredictability isn't really offset by some compensatory reward. I love Punch-Out; it's one of the first games I ever owned, and I've gotten to (without beating) Mike Tyson more times than I can count. But you can like something while acknowledging faults in it. That's okay. It's how we learn. Here's how Punch-Out could have made the block more useful: don't make blocking expend a heart, and give enemies a fatigue mechanic that works the same as yours. And, like yours, they should lose hearts when they punch against a block. So you lose hearts when you hit THEIR block, and they lose hearts when they hit YOUR block. And when either one of you gets fatigued, their character turns pink and becomes vulnerable for a little while. Bam. Suddenly the player's blocking like crazy. And when they reach bosses which require expert blocking to overcome, they're no longer going, "What the fuck?! How do I beat this guy?!"
