In my opinion, the level where Abby fights the Rat King is an absolute master class on video game level design. Naughty Dog starts by having Nora tell us the lower levels are "...overgrown to shit..." That sets the stage. Tension is built as you go deeper into bowels of the hospital as it steadily increases in horrific magnitude. Then, it pays it off with a kick ass boss fight. (Not gonna lie though, on my first playthrough, I fucking died soooo many times I was close to rage quitting. I kept running myself into corners, struggled to switch weapons [before I learned about R1], was damn near out of ammo and that thing still wouldn't die. Then I thought, maybe you can't kill it, maybe you're supposed to run away? Nope. I actually had to look that part up on KZbin to see if that thing could actually be killed. Fucking thing. 😄😄)

tbh this was foreshadowed well, but it was a pretty basic "human protag vs huge monster" type fight where the protag just runs and finds its weaknesses. nothing special in terms of the level design either, but it was great for the horror. Abby's plot armor is too big to make it a master class tho

You didn’t mention the other parts that foreshadowed the monster. You hear its moans several times while in that section. Abby even reacts to it and questions it. You also see the trails of blood and Abby comments on it as well. Finally, you see ginormous holes in the walls in several parts of the hospital, and I think even Abby starts getting scared.

So funny story about my first encounter with this beast. When I first saw the door had been knocked off the hinges after she turned the power back on, I specifically remember saying "Oh great, looks like another Bloater fight. Hopefully they give her a bigger space to fight it than Ellie had". So you all know the story of how she got the med kit, and I knew the "Bloater" would come after getting it. i was right about one thing, and that was that a boss fight would ensue immediately after getting the kit. What I was very, very, VERY wrong about.... That was no goddamn Bloater.

Sure I don’t like that Abby killed Joel but through my play-through of the game where I actually payed attention to the story; i know what her motivations are and why she did what she did; even if I don’t agree with how everything unfolded; I understand it Which is the point of storytelling. No it’s called the rat king because it’s a bunch of different infected fused together very similar in nature to an actual phenomenon in real life where rats tail get connected together by some means.

Lee 24 well the difference is that you can be in the dark and mutate to have a thick fungal armour. This isn’t really a mutation it’s just a fusion, a bunch of infected getting connected in grotesque ways and combining to share a single collective consciousness.

I was so horrified but to me it was one of the easiest kills. I guess i was very lucky to have a lot of bombs, molotovs and ammo stocked up. Just threw 3 Bombs at him at once, used the flamethrower and the shotgun. And he was out in like a minute (I played on moderate). But it was the worst minute ever.

Shambler and Bloater are the same stage of infection. There is an easy explanation about the rat king. He is a mix of stages that mixed together, they are basically glued, like the actual rat king thing.

I just love how every player goes for the shotgun with every surprise combats, 'cause same. It's my default weapon when travelling in TLOU. It's the best for a short distance enemy that ensures almost instant death when shot with it😂
