Why do they even bother calling it a 2.75 slot card, when it's really a 3 slot card? Are there plans for a 0.25 slot card in the future? LOL!

That's how it starts... Next you'll be googling the terms, before you know it you'll be A+/ Net+ certified pondering whether the Microsoft certs are worth the cost, should you just go to college, or maybe just get a job in the field and learn your skis that way... For me it was hearing my drafting and design teacher talking about building his computer network at home...20+ years of IT work later... It must be something about techie talk that draws certain people in.

@@infantryrecon101st Yes and no. It's expensive and the drop in temperatures are not too drastic since the stock cooler is one of the better out there. But that said, I think it looks great and I don't think I've seen my GPU temps above 60°C since I installed the block even with a decent OC. If you have the money for it and value the lower temps and noise I'd say go for it.

Always a pleasure to watch Steve do a teardown! I wish there were more of them (not only for GPUs, but for MoBos and other computer hardware as well). REGARDING THE FAN: I believe the model number can be broken down as follows... The first two digits ("PL") simply stand for Power Logic, the next ("D") is the series; this is followed by the (3-digit) size and (2-digit) thickness, then either "B" (for Ball bearing) or "S" (for Sleeve bearing); lastly, we have the voltage and "L", "M", or "H" (Low/Medium/High) RPM. Thus, a PLD09220S12H is a Power Logic D-series 92mm × 20mm sleeve-bearing fan designed for 12 volts and high RPM.

@@More_Row yeah recouping research cost of hundreds of billions to implement an outdated technology into this stale and fucked up market that is help back by a number of things starting with CPUS bottlenecking even 10 series high end cards let alone the 20 series. Game engines so outdated everything looks almost the same. The lack of actually pushing something to be for a small few so that it drives up the need to create more cost efficient and more powerful hardware to keep up. Whats the point in creating far better hardware if basically everyone can use cheaper weaker hardware and be completely fine doing whatever they want it means theres no need to really push for anything. It becomes completely stale. Consoles are the biggest reason for this already and game developers as well.

What a well built cooler. As always from EVGA i love how they optimize everything for airflow. I wish manufacturers would stop putting stupid logos and fancy designs on the whole entire SIDES of the card, it just restricts airflow. Best example of this is my 1080 AMP! Edition from Zotac, the sides of the card are covered by fancy fake carbon so much that i can feel a lot air ejecting out of the actual fans and not going out the sides. My temps are really hot aswell.

At least that thing doesn't have anything in front of the fans. Many new cards seem to have ornamental pieces of plastic blocking the fans, reducing airflow. Examples: i.imgur.com/sj3BXjf.jpg and i.imgur.com/ImthpNj.jpg

Steve question about backplates: Are backplates being used on these bigger cards to add structural integrity to the cards? I've heard a lot that there's no thermal performance gain, and while looking at this BOHEMOTH of a card I thought "That is a TON of heatsink, that has to stress / flex the PCB....oh....huh....it might just screw onto the backplate to move that stress there....." -> The way I see it, the backplate could theoretically force that PCB to be straight / flat despite the large amount of weight pulling down on it... though the PCIe connector might still be stressed

And here I start to wonder what the phase change temperature of the heat pipe is. Since some might say that it should be as low as possible. And that technically isn't optimal, since the phase change temperature of the system when the water/liquid boils. Thereby drawing away heat. But one needs to get bellow that same temperature for it to go back into liquid. So what temperature would be optimal? I personally would make a rough "guess" that somewhere around 55-65 degrees C would be fairly optimal. Since most GPUs tends to go to around 80 degrees C during operation. This would mean that our heat sink can be at a warm 60 degrees, giving a large delta to ambient air flowing through the case, and through that provide efficient cooling. Downside is, the idle temperature of the system would be higher, since the heat pipes aren't all that conductive when below their phase change temperature. In terms of CPU coolers, one could upgrade from one small cooler, to a larger one, without seeing any change in low load temperature, even if the better cooler would be able to keep the peak temperatures lower under higher loads. (This is a quirk of heat pipes that I find particularly funny.) But it has also made me wonder, would a planar heat pipe make for a good IHS for a CPU? Since a heat pipe can have higher thermal conductivity then a slab of copper.

I kind of feel like a fool for paying full MSRP for a generation old card but I got it direct from the manufacturer and GODDAMNIT I PAID MSRP and that at least feels good to be able to say. Wouldn't it be better in terms of price and performance to buy a reference card and stick an aftermarket cooler at it? There are beefier coolers out there but something like accelero twin turbo 3 is $40, designed for 250w tdp, has a proper backplate and it's radiator sits a bit higher than graphics card pcb unlike these rads that sit on top of the graphics card.I'm pretty sure if one wants to stack graphics cards they would go for ref design or do custom loop stack.

Question. Why don't companies sell separate heat sinks and PCB's as graphics cards? Put your own heat sink on it. It is possible if they would follow standard rules with regard to layout which prescribes where you can and where you can't put the GPU and memory. This way the cost would be lower but much more importantly, we wouldn't waste so much metal and enery (to process that metal). Given that many of us buy a new graphics card every 2-4 years it would make sense to reuse the heatsink and fans, both for cost and the environment.

Is Kryonaut any good for repasting the 'thin and light' gaming laptops that are currently prevalent? With the i7 8750 and 1060/1070, they often seem to run hot, and I notice that Kryonaut specifically calls out that it halts the drying process 'up to 80°C'. You know, you gotta love a translucent front plate. You know, made out of the kind of plastic you usually see on the cheapest electronic accessories that you can buy on Aliexpress, and not on a premium high-end PC component that costs 1350 US dollars. What the fuck EVGA.

All those complaining about price didn't complain when they were calling these Titans a few years ago, should've kept the name and came up with a new name for the $3000 tier like Goliath.

Canadian dollars are not the same currency as US dollars. You can't compare prices between different currencies without doing a currency conversion. 2000 CAD seems to be 1490 USD. US prices are always without taxes. If you have a 13% VAT, then 1350 USD x 1,13 = 1525,5 USD, which is 2043 CAD. So the price in Canada seems to be perfectly in line with the 1350 USD price. In comparison, 1350 USD = 152 130 Yen. This card seems to sell for 400 000 Yen in Japan, which is about 3550 US dollars. Now that's expensive.

Maybe I am wrong, but I feel like with how much these cards cost now, the heatsinks should be solid copper, seriously, it would only cost a few dollars
