Always a pleasure to watch Steve do a teardown! I wish there were more of them (not only for GPUs, but for MoBos and other computer hardware as well). REGARDING THE FAN: I believe the model number can be broken down as follows... The first two digits ("PL") simply stand for Power Logic, the next ("D") is the series; this is followed by the (3-digit) size and (2-digit) thickness, then either "B" (for Ball bearing) or "S" (for Sleeve bearing); lastly, we have the voltage and "L", "M", or "H" (Low/Medium/High) RPM. Thus, a PLD09220S12H is a Power Logic D-series 92mm × 20mm sleeve-bearing fan designed for 12 volts and high RPM.

The lack of actually pushing something to be for a small few so that it drives up the need to create more cost efficient and more powerful hardware to keep up. Whats the point in creating far better hardware if basically everyone can use cheaper weaker hardware and be completely fine doing whatever they want it means theres no need to really push for anything. I've heard a lot that there's no thermal performance gain, and while looking at this BOHEMOTH of a card I thought "That is a TON of heatsink, that has to stress / flex the PCB....oh....huh....it might just screw onto the backplate to move that stress there....." -> The way I see it, the backplate could theoretically force that PCB to be straight / flat despite the large amount of weight pulling down on it... though the PCIe connector might still be stressed

And here I start to wonder what the phase change temperature of the heat pipe is. Since some might say that it should be as low as possible. And that technically isn't optimal, since the phase change temperature of the system when the water/liquid boils. Thereby drawing away heat. But one needs to get bellow that same temperature for it to go back into liquid. So what temperature would be optimal? I personally would make a rough "guess" that somewhere around 55-65 degrees C would be fairly optimal. Since most GPUs tends to go to around 80 degrees C during operation. This would mean that our heat sink can be at a warm 60 degrees, giving a large delta to ambient air flowing through the case, and through that provide efficient cooling. Downside is, the idle temperature of the system would be higher, since the heat pipes aren't all that conductive when below their phase change temperature. In terms of CPU coolers, one could upgrade from one small cooler, to a larger one, without seeing any change in low load temperature, even if the better cooler would be able to keep the peak temperatures lower under higher loads. (This is a quirk of heat pipes that I find particularly funny.) But it has also made me wonder, would a planar heat pipe make for a good IHS for a CPU? Since a heat pipe can have higher thermal conductivity then a slab of copper.

Wouldn't it be better in terms of price and performance to buy a reference card and stick an aftermarket cooler at it? There are beefier coolers out there but something like accelero twin turbo 3 is $40, designed for 250w tdp, has a proper backplate and it's radiator sits a bit higher than graphics card pcb unlike these rads that sit on top of the graphics card.I'm pretty sure if one wants to stack graphics cards they would go for ref design or do custom loop stack.

Question. Why don't companies sell separate heat sinks and PCB's as graphics cards? Put your own heat sink on it. It is possible if they would follow standard rules with regard to layout which prescribes where you can and where you can't put the GPU and memory. This way the cost would be lower but much more importantly, we wouldn't waste so much metal and enery (to process that metal). Given that many of us buy a new graphics card every 2-4 years it would make sense to reuse the heatsink and fans, both for cost and the environment.

Canadian dollars are not the same currency as US dollars. You can't compare prices between different currencies without doing a currency conversion. 2000 CAD seems to be 1490 USD. US prices are always without taxes. If you have a 13% VAT, then 1350 USD x 1,13 = 1525,5 USD, which is 2043 CAD. So the price in Canada seems to be perfectly in line with the 1350 USD price. In comparison, 1350 USD = 152 130 Yen. This card seems to sell for 400 000 Yen in Japan, which is about 3550 US dollars. Now that's expensive.
