That's so cool man. That one song, just said so much. I was 11.12? Sadly, I think it's worse now. But listening to it was like. "Yeah. I am in with this. He is saying it." Just so truthful and down to earth. We needed it then and need it now. If someone wrote a song called Stop the B.S. now it would fit. But how would you say it? Joe just captured it. Nothing new under the sun. The truth lasts forever. The lies? They keep hurting but will fade with time.

In addition to being a songwriter and singer, Joe South also played as a sideman with other artists on their records, like playing guitar on Tommy Roe's "Sheila," Bob Dylan's "Blonde on Blonde," Aretha Franklin's "Chain of Fools," and Simon and Garfunkel's "Sounds of Silence."

Harri, he had that one big hit for himself, but he's probably better known as a songwriter. He wrote the song "Down in the Boondocks" which was a hit for Billy Joe Royal in the 60s, in the 70's Lynn Anderson had a huge hit Rose Garden. He wrote stuff for Pop as well as Country artists.

Joe South had a few hit songs but he wrote some very big hits for other artists like "Rose Garden" by Lynn Anderson, "Down In The Boondocks" by Billy Joe Royal and "Reach Out In The Darkness" by Friend and Lover and a few others. He was a session guitarist at Muscle Shoals recording studio and played the swampy guitar on "Chain Of Fools" by Aretha Franklin.

Great singer/songwriter. This track was a "Song of Year at the Grammys in 1970. He's also known for "Walk a Mile in My Shoes" (which was covered by Elvis on stage) and the gorgeously sentimental "Don't It Make You Want to Go Home." He also wrote many hits for others including "Rose Garden" (Lynn Anderson), "Hush" (Deep Purple), and "Down in the Boondocks" (Billy Joe Royal).

As well as a hit songwriter in the pop, country and rock genres, Joe was a world class musician playing on records by Bob Dylan, Aretha Franklin, Simon & Garfunkel and many others. Like many of his generation from the American South he was equally influenced by soul/country/blues/pop music.

Harri, you really hit be in the gut with your history of when this song hit you. Now for the life of me, I thought what the heck, because I felt the same way! I think you may find your answer listing to Jimmy Reed, Honest I Do. keep in mind I'm totally guessing. Getting back to Joe, Polk Salad Annie, was a huge hit. I thought Joe South was Black and I was shocked to find many years he was white. Also, this song makes you cry, because it should be our National Anthem for grade school children, in America in all schools. Just put their heart on that song. Its a song bigger than American life itself. Thank for memory, because I would never have come across it, no way. I just felt the beat and melody was heart rendering, like a Otis Redding melody. Anyway, I think your on to something here. Joe is known for Swamp mud music, out of the south. He's likely to have written, Cherry Hill Park? Cherry Hill Park was band on radio at first but eventually got on radio. Hell was a hell of a writer and really I think well under rated. Respected more in England. but very loved in the American Southern States. Thanks for your study on this song.
@joesouthsgirl5662
@joesouthsgirl5662 Жыл бұрын
Cameron, I think you are a little mistaken. Tony Joe White did "Polk Salad Annie", not Joe South. Joe South did not do swamp style music, but Tony Joe White did. They are both white, but it really doesn't matter what color they are or were, they were both really good singers with amazing talents. Joe South described his own music as "country soul". He was an excellent musician and a terrific man. Joe South helped Billy Joe Royal get his career going by writing several songs just for Billy Joe to sing. He also wrote songs for The Tams. He was a very generous man.

Love your intro about, heard this and I can tell you where I was etc. This song is not Country it is UNIVERSAL. It's humanity and its nonsense. "God give me the ....to remember who I am." He just ripped off the veneers and said Why? Life's hard enough, ya know? One of the few, simple songs ever made that has great depth. It transcends time.

Country / Pop crossover music is among my favourite types .. While I generally find pure country a little dull, there are countless examples of country styled songs that were mainstream hits and are really enjoyable to my ears .. The 60's were full of them .. Artists like Marty Robbins, Don Gibson, Ned Miller, Glenn Campbell, etc had many such songs .. Check 'em out .. Cheers, Wayne
