The games in the Bioshock collection looks considerably better than the originals on console. The 60 frames alone is a huge boost. Not to mention it includes all the DLC. NG trilogy is worse than the originals. Bioshocks are clearly better in the collection.

Tim Houston I'm personally referring to the mess that is the PC version of the game. Yeah it does look better (at least when you edit the INI file to turn on shadows that for some stupid reason is turned off by default) and thank god that they fixed the physics so that they don't run at 30 unlike the rest of the game, but they really didn't do much to the game to be honest. Hell, there are a ton more of technical issues with the PC version, and just strange changes like how the first person models are locked at 60fps, while in the original game they weren't locked to a frame rate. I've heard it's good on the consoles, but on PC, it's a fucking mess.

Probably 90% of Wii games made the console look like it was less powerfull than the gamecube, as many were just adaptations of PS2 games... So there's quite a lot of choice there. XD Even Nintendo themselves were a bit at fault there, WiiSports looks like an early Gamecube game, although it was intentionally kept simple. (the Wii was about twice as powerful as the 'cube. You notice it with Mario Galaxy and Zelda Skyward Sword's graphisms.)

Bit harsh... Flicky was meant to finally be an arcade perfect port - and it succeeded in its mission. New Zealand Story is the best home version by far. These are 8-bit classics and shouldn't be judged next to, say Gunstar Heroes or Thunderforce IV. Nice episode though, of course.
@CarozQH8 жыл бұрын
Yeah, Flicky was released as a budget game in the west, it really didn't need any amazing scrolling effects.
@cthulhupthagn57718 жыл бұрын
as they sqy around the Midway point just because it's a weak game doesn't mean it's a bad game. I think people misunderstand the point of this episode, the point was to illustrate games that did the direct opposite of push a game system. The game does look like fun and it probably is fun but it's a game that could run it on virtually an Atari system
@Fattydeposit8 жыл бұрын
cthulhu Pthagn That's a fair point. I guess I've just never thought of those particular Mega Drive games as being particularly bad examples of the console's power. They both run at 60 fps and originate many years before the console existed. The technical jump between, say, Streets of Rage and SOR2 is more impressive to me than any technical disappointment that Flicky and NZS might represent as Mega Drive games, if that makes sense.

Regarding Flicky: It seems so basic because it was originally a downloadable title for the Sega MegaNet service in Japan, so the memory footprint was pretty small. That's why it was released as a budget game here in North America. Fun Fact: Sonic 3D Blast (which takes place on Flicky Island) has almost the exact same play mechanics as the original Flicky. Five little birds follow you around which scatter if you get hit, and ultimately unlock the exit to each level. And clearly I wrote this note before getting to the Game Can segment :)

I always love this videos on this channel, but tbh this (and only this) episode seems to have missed the mark I think, Loads of games shown here are really good and Flicky is one of them, and New Zealand Story. I even quite like Athena - it's ironically one of the better ports, but it does suffer from bad hit detection. All that said, maybe they do make the system look weak, but they aren't bad games I guess is what I am thinking.

I think this opens up a potentially interesting episode comparing early vs late console offerings from the same team (since the weaker offerings tend to come early in the cycle and the ones that push the hardware tend to be later). For example, limitations that held back Super Mario World vs. where they were able to get around them for Yoshi's Island.
@SuperHamsterGaming8 жыл бұрын
I wonder how many late developed Master System games got crammed on a Genesis cart because it was backwards compatible and the Master System was on its way out.
@frankschneider61568 жыл бұрын
The Genesis was absolutely not compatible with the SMS, at least not out of the box without an adapter. The SMS used an 8-Bit Zilog Z-80 CPU, while the Genesis used a Motoriola 68000. That is even less binary compatible than french fries and horseradish flavoured whipped cream.
@SuperHamsterGaming8 жыл бұрын
Frank Schneider You're partially right, and partially wrong. The Genesis does have a 68k CPU, it also has a Z80. Usually the Z80 in the Genesis runs the audio program, but it is also used for backwards compatibility with the Master System. All the Power Base converter does is convert the cartridge shape, and trigger the pin on the Genesis slot that tells it to go into Master System mode. The Master System games run on Genesis's own Z80 with no other conversion needed. In fact if you have a Genesis Everdrive you can load Master System roms right of the cartridge. The only Master System games that won't run on the Genesis are ones that use the SG1000 graphics modes. The SG1000 was Sega's system before the Master System and the Master System was also backwards compatible. The Genesis however does not have SG1000 graphics modes. So yes the main CPU in a Genesis is a 68k, but it does have a Z80 and is 99.99% compatible with the Master System's software.
@TheDeeplyCynical8 жыл бұрын
A bit of trivia, Phantasy Star (the first game) had a limited edition Mega Drive release in Japan was just a master system ROM in a Mega Drive Shell. The Z80 CPU took vontrol of the system and ran the game in SMS mode.
@frankschneider61568 жыл бұрын
Super Hamster Gaming First: Great Answer, I obviously didn't know about a Z80 as a Co-processor at the time I wrote the post. So thanks for the info. It actually somewhat explains, why the Genesis is largely quite up to the level of the SNES, despite otherwise weaker specs. But I doubt that the Z80 usually did most of the audio stuff, as it has 2 dedicated processors for that (I just looked that up): a Yamaha YM2612 and a TI SN76489 (probably a DSP). So it seems to me, that the Z80 was indeed included from the beginning foremost with SMS backwards compatibility in mind, but Sega changed the cartridge slot and omitted a card reader to be able to sell an (obviously planned from the start) power base adapter. Sneaky bastards.
@TheDeeplyCynical8 жыл бұрын
Frank Schneider The YM2612 was the FM synthesis chip, The SN76489 was a Programmable sound generator used for sound effects and Master system audio the Z80 is used to control both sound chips in Mega Drive games. whereas it can be used as the main cpu when running master system games EDIT The backwards compatability is more like the PS2 where it used the CPU from the original Playstation to control I/O functions but could be used for PS one games as the main CPU and not the Emotion Engine

Ninja Gaiden Trilogy is a neat compilation but it feels like Tecmo did everything in their power to ruin it. The controls feel less responsive and some of the graphics even feel like a downgrade from the NES, they even censored the blood from Ninja Gaiden 2 which even managed to make it past the censors on the original NES. But the music was the worst sin of them all! Even the best remixes where inferior to the NES originals and whoever decided to take the 4-2 theme, the most metal song in the entire trilogy, and replace the instruments with a xylophone deserves to be banished into the world of Sonic 06.

ok so i did some digging, wanted to know if the NES version is really that bad and found this "Athena gained some amount of popularity in the West due to it's NES home conversion. Some of the multiple routes have been removed, and the sloppy controls have actually been made worse. Some of the damage has been rebalanced, but you can still find yourself getting massacred within a span of a few seconds. The graphics have obviously taken a hit, although they still hold up respectably, but the same can't be said of the offensive musical soundtrack. Athena is consistently voted one of the worst (and hardest) NES games of all time. It didn't help that much of the appeal behind Athena was ruined by the Western artwork"

If Athena looks a little familiar, the fact it's made by SNK will make it obvious. Athena would return later for their King of Fighters games down the line. Whoa, Final Labyrinth! I haven't seen that game since the Sega Channel days! Too bad I was too young back then to understand how to play it.

It's nice to find ROMhacks of Nintendo games using engine features that Nintendo didn't think about implementing. Even some modern updated sprite work of classics from the early '90s was possible to do back then, but now can be experienced today, including updated CD quality soundtrack and full motion videos the SNES couldn't do!

Hurray you guys are back!! Been binge watching all the other episodes so it's great to see you back... but for how long? Don't let normal everyday life get in the way of making these as I'm selfish and need you to entertain me!!

Virtual hylide bit was funny! That game is one of my guilty pleasures. Put a lot of time into that as a kid.

You could put about 50% of Atari Jaguar games on this list. Some games like Double Dragon 5, Dragon Bruce Lee, Flashback, Cannon Fodder, Bubsy, Zool 2and Troy Aikman football were just 16 bit ports and seemed really out of place for a supposed 64 bit console.

Fist of the North Star has never been treated well in a game format. You guys should take a look at the very first Hokuto no Ken game on the Famicom next time you do a compilation like this... it's baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaad.

If you throw the toaster in a bathtub while you're in it, the game will boot up like normal! You're welcome. (:

I tried it, nothing happened. Was i supposed to plug in the toaster?
@level948368 жыл бұрын
Kevster012 Maybe? you'll know it works when the toaster screams "DAYTOOOONA" and then plays it just like normal. or explodes into flames, whatever happens first.

Kevster012 My mistake, yes. I usually assume that most people know that, but I guess I should add that in for later tutorials! Thanks man!

Kind of weird that the Saturn version still had polka-dot shadows, you'd think they could at least have fully solid shadows considering the N64 managed to have alpha transparent ones.

Virtua Fighter (1) for Saturn. I enjoyed playing it, but the glitchy arena, and the way the polygons would flicker during the replays gave a very poor impression of the system's capabilities.

those are homebews though
@BlueNeon818 жыл бұрын
I accept that, but every Dreamcast owner wants a great game for that console, not just 2D shooters. Many homebrew games for other consoles may push the hardware limits, so why is nobody trying to do so on Dreamcast, too?
@AenimaEater8 жыл бұрын
I only want more 2D shooters because they´re my favorite genre ;)

BlueNeon81 yeah i m curious how far 3d could be pushed on Dreamcast.

Probably because pushing a 32-bit or later console exceeds the budget that a startup of ex-hobbyists has access to.

Flicky is also the race of the birds you have to rescue in Sonic 3d Blast for the Genesis. That you have to take to a special exit and avoid them being hit by enemies or else they stop following. Jeez, no wonder Telltale games went nowhere.

Most JRPGs in PS3 looks like a PS2 game.
@qishmish8 жыл бұрын
Dont go too much with exagerrating though. I mean, usually when i hear that someone says "looks like ps2 game" and i check that game and, OMG, looks like ps2 could NOT handle it's models, textures, locations etc. It may still look UGLY and in same time obviously being higher technology wise than ps2 hardware could do >
@JackieFroSTALKER8 жыл бұрын
People really tend to forget what games on the PS2 actually looked like. Some of them did push the hardware pretty well but they still didn't look close to the average PS3 games as far as I can think of.

in particular the Nippon Ichi games (like the Neptunia series) have detailed characters but very poorly realizied ambients
@manaphylv1008 жыл бұрын
I think the problem with the Neptunia series is the graphics engine they chose isn't the best for the job, but they still look much better than, say, Ar Tonelico 3 and Cross Edge. Maybe they should've gone with cell-shading like the Atelier series, which has pretty nice graphics - especially in the later titles like Rorona Plus and Shallie - and none of the frame-rate issues that plagued mk2 (and Victory to some extent).
