I had my Saturn since launch and it just sat in my closet until I decided to buy a fenrir and see what was out there…it went from my least, to my favorite system. Policenauts, shining force 3, grandia, silver star, to some lesser known games like valhollian and linkel liver story are so great

If you do another one of these I'd like to see any or all of the following items, if you have them or manage to get them: Dreamcast ODEs (GDEmu and USB GD-ROM controller), Saturn ODEs (Rhea or Phoebe and eventually the Satiator if it's finished), 64drive (there's a new version), FDSStick (Famicom Disk System Drive emulator), HD Retrovision component cables.

If you read my previous comment you've probably deduced that I liked the first part a lot more 8^) The rest was good stuff too, I just don't care for clone consoles personally (with the exception of well engineered FPGA systems like AVS and Analogue Nt mini)

We'd love to... if we had that stuff!
@iCach07 жыл бұрын
Admittedly a lot of what I put on my list is hard to get but the FDSStick is pretty inexpensive at $17 and is usually in stock at the creators site. The HD Retrovision cables are totally worth the money and the wait IMO, plus they're pretty good at communicating and managing the sales. The 64drive is a little on the expensive side but worth every penny, it was developed by the same person who designed the HDMI board for the N64 and has some neat features compared to the Everdrive 64. The rest is a pain to get honestly, mostly because of the waiting times and not everyone is great at communicating. But with perseverance it's doable.

@CharlesNiswander7 жыл бұрын
I'm surprised nobody ever mentions the Raspberry Pi. For 35$ you get emulation of NES, SNES, N64, PS1, Dreamcast, PSP, Genesis, Gameboy, Gameboy Advance, Master System, I could keep going.....Commodore 64.....you name it, all through HDMI. I'm really not joking. Puts those silly expensive clones to shame.
@arcadeperfectreviews26537 жыл бұрын
Charles Niswander everyone always mentions that. It's not the first emulation machine. I have one and it's okay, but channels like this are for collectors.
@CharlesNiswander7 жыл бұрын
Of course, but as a collector, I prefer to not play the physical carts I own. I prefer longevity to that admittedly sweet feeling of "genuine" nostalgia you get from playing the originals....but emulation is certainly perfectly fine for playing (most games).
@CharlesNiswander7 жыл бұрын
And no, it's not the first, just far superior to anything but emulation on PC. Which some of us have been doing since the early 2000s....so no, emulation is far from a new thing. I just don't see a lot of mention of the Pi, so figured it in everyone's best interest to have the opportunity to know there's a cheap, effective emulation machine out there that's not a bad purchase. :)
@arcadeperfectreviews26537 жыл бұрын
Charles Niswander you're right it's not bad. I have one, but to be honest I really only use it when people are over to play arcade games on my HDTV. I also notice lag and the Pi does have a few frames of it. Still these retro collection channels don't really get I to the Pi much but there are 100s of KZbin videos on them. I mostly game on my CRT with composite and if I'm forced to emulate (mostly for non-neo geo or Sega atomus wave arcade games) I do it on my PC which is a heavy gaming rig, mostly because I have a lag free moniter. But yea I see your points.

No disrespect to db Electronics, but I've tried to buy their db Booster Plus for many years and it was always showing either Coming Soon or Sold Out. Giving up on it I ran across a very similar looking TG16/PCE expansion board from an eBay seller in China and bought that instead. I was blown away by the quality. Up until this I had been using the RF until around '92, then a Turbo Booster + until now. Aside from only costing $30 (as opposed to $60+), the best part is that not only does it do Composite, stereo, Svideo, RGB, but it also does YUV! Yep, good old YPbPr component video. The db Booster would require another $53 HDRetrovision Gen2 YUV cable to connect your TG16 to a standard HDTV or CRT with Component input. Highly recommended!

I wouldn't really consider VGA a modern accessory, lol. I haven't owned a monitor (or any display device) that supports VGA (or any analog inputs) for many years now. My entire setup is HDMI and DisplayPort only.
@CharlesNiswander7 жыл бұрын
For 35$ and a little bit of setup, the Raspberry Pi 3 can outperform ALL of those clone consoles in every way (if you're OK with using roms.) Under US archival law, it is actually legal to have backup ROMs of carts/software you own, and it does not have to be backed up personally by you if it is the same software (ie, if you own the cart you can download a ROM). (All this is really academic anyway since people aren't prosecuted for emulation of copyrighted ROMs, as in ever)...but from an ethical standpoint, it seems to be possible to legally back up the idea that you're doing no harm and well within your legal rights to use a ROM of a game that you did at one time pay for. And the Raspberry Pi is completely configurable and can play any system from pre-NES through N64 and even Dreamcast games. It's a retro-game lovers dream. And really not difficult to set up, though you'll need to set aside a couple hours to get everything set up how you want it, downloading game covers, etc.
@CharlesNiswander7 жыл бұрын
And yes, I believe under US Code Title 17 you WOULD be considered "owner of a copy" because software sold on physical medium with no EULA is a "copy" and not a "license", as is the case with many modern games. In fact, the protection of your right to make an archival copy of a piece of software that you own, under the DMCA (this includes movies as well), is full and includes the right to use said archival copy for utilization of the software, especially in the case of the original copy (the cartridge in this case) being physically no longer able to function. This means that if you ever bought a specific game cart and never resold it (having resold it would void this right) but you rather lost or broke the cart, you would still be protected to own and use a ROM of that game. Of course, all this would be near impossible to prove or keep track of, but the point is that no-one is going to persecute you for exercising your right to utilize archival copies of software you paid for. Even those who use ROMs unethically have never, ever been prosecuted for copyright infringement....it's just not a thing....which doesn't make it OK to steal games, but there IS a firm legal ground for there being normal, usual situations where emulating ROMs is 100% legitimate under US law (I'm not a lawyer and am speaking merely on well-founded conjecture, I'm not responsible for what anyone does with their time. That being said, this can all be researched and decided for oneself.)

Dude, most people don't have the time or ability for that. I'm the guy that everyone calls to hook up and/or fix their electronic shit; I'm fairly tech savvy, but putting one of these together is nothing I would want to or even try to attempt. Retail clone and emulator systems are simple solutions for most people. Also: kzbin.info/www/bejne/n2Tdc6OvZt5geJo
@CharlesNiswander7 жыл бұрын
Not very confident, huh? I tell you what, maybe it is difficult for some people, but I did not find it difficult. Yea, I'm a programmer, but basic computer skills was all the was necessary to put it together. I'm not trying to be insulting, honestly, but from my perspective, people seem pretty technologically inept if the lack of ability to use devices is so widespread. I had very little trouble, took me maybe a week of tinkering to get it all right, and the documentation is amazing. It's not for the lazy or super-busy, that's true. But difficult? Maybe if you're willing to admit lack of basic technological skills. IMHO, every single child should be taught to use a command line. It's the most basic interface, and extremely important in a world so dependent upon computers! Your comment, and John Riggs video (who is awesome) both make me sad. It's hard to believe people would rather drop a few hundred bucks than the $35-60 a Pi would cost (price varying depending on whether you already have SD cards/HDMI cable/phone charging cord already- who doesn't have that crap lying around the house?). I hear ya though man. I'm the one everyone calls too for fixing electronics of all kinds. It's more a lack of confidence people have, than a lack of ability. Many people, especially older people, see them as almost magical, and assume only experts can play with the innards. I feel it's important for people to take the initiative to learn how to use the devices civilization almost depends on completely now. Just the same as anyone who drives should be able to change a tire, replace a spark plug, change the oil etc. without being an expert. Leave the experts to the programming- anyone should be able to configure and set-up. I agree with your assessment. It just saddens me.
@CharlesNiswander7 жыл бұрын
And shame on Riggs for trying to make people feel stupid and incompetent! I hope he's not implying he had trouble with it. I saw a video a few weeks back, "explaining" how lag on the Pi when emulating N64 is unavoidable. I about lost my cool, because the tuber was a rather popular tech tuber, and my Pi doesn't lag at all from N64 games, or PS1 or PSP or any of it. It's all about proper configuration, and you're right, seems like few can handle such an easy task. There's documentation out the nose on the Pi.... :)

Random accessories and clone hardware... that's my kind of thing. The current HDMI NES hardware clones I've tested (8-Bit HD Versions 1 and 2, of which Version 2 is the one Dave showed, and the RetroN HD) seem to be pretty lackluster and all have varying problems. The first revision of the 8-Bit HD had faulty audio hardware causing severely mangled audio, but was compatible with the EverDrive N8 and the Zapper. That Zapper incompatibility on the 8-Bit HD Version 2 looks to be an odd quirk of the NOAC in the console that blanks out the screen when a solid color is displayed, so while the Zapper technically works, the fact the screen doesn't flash white means the controller itself never registers anything. In fact, I even had jitter issues with the Arkanoid controller on my 8-Bit HD Version 2 where pressing the button would make the Vaus jump to a random spot on the screen. I do not understand the broken EverDrive N8 compatibility, though, and even the Famicom Disk System is broken, with the RAM cartridge displaying a Battery Error non-stop. The lack of 4:3 aspect correction is a serious oversight as not even my TVs can squeeze the picture down to 4:3, but worse still is the audio sample rate of 32KHz, a sample rate that some TVs don't even accept and will handle the 8-Bit HD with no audio. The RetroN HD, though... OH LORD!!! This is the worst of the HDMI NES hardware clones with incredibly blurry HDMI output, the same 32KHz sample rate issue, an AWFUL color palette and still has broken Famicom Disk System and EverDrive N8 compatibility. Hell, it doesn't even have expansion audio mixing like the 8-Bit HD! The only good things about this clone are much bassier audio and a 4:3/16:9 aspect switch, but with how awful the presentation is, why would you even use this thing? I still have yet to test RetroBit's take on an HDMI NES hardware clone, the RES+, but I'm expecting about the same. I will be testing the AVS soon, though, and I'm really looking forward to that, especially with it being based on an FPGA and not a pre-existing NOAC design. With regards to the MiniGen, I'm a bit disappointed in how it performs. That noise in the video signal was an unpleasant surprise and I am SERIOUSLY annoyed at the lack of stereo audio. Also, the distortion here normally isn't down to a bad preamp, but rather incorrect resistors on the outputs of the GOAC's YM3438. Most of these clones use 10Kohm resistors, which are COMPLETELY inadequate; the bare minimum should be 33Kohm resistors. I certainly don't see anything that looks like an op-amp next to the GOAC, so I would assume this is the problem. Speaking of the GOAC, is that a TCT-6801 or TCT-6803 in the system? These have integrated headphone amps in them, and to use a single one for mono audio is just pure laziness. I'm not sure if this is what was done in the console, but most clones I've seen with the TCT-6801 and TCT-6803 that have mono audio use only one of the built-in amps. As for the MiniGen's Japanese equivalent, it's actually the MD Compact. Same case, but painted to resemble a Japanese MegaDrive 2 instead. Lastly, a word of advice: NEVER use an XRGB-Mini for Composite or S-Video off of either a Genesis or Genesis hardware clone. The converter has a massive color problem with the video signal and will often oversaturate, exaggerate rainbow-colored fringing artifacts and induce random, inconsistent hue shifts any time the box syncs to the incoming signal. Consider getting a basic Composite/S-Video capture device instead for that.

@Game Sack Have you guys seen this article about the Everdrives? Basically it explains how some flashcarts/Everdrives actually damage your systems over time. Check it out as I would like to know your thoughts. Also as a side note I have heard the Turbo Everdrive actually bends the pins slightly due to being thicker than a normal hue card and actually prevents you from playing normal games if you pull it in and out too much. db-electronics.ca/2017/07/05/the-dangers-of-3-3v-flash-in-retro-consoles/

I've never heard of that issue with the Turbo Everdrive in all the years since it's been released and I haunt plenty of forums where it's discussed. I've have no issues playing any normal HuCards. The only one I've ever had to preposition before it works is my Super System Card... and only that one. And it's been like that since before the Turbo ED existed.

I have several everdrives and have used them for years. None has ever damaged a console. However, I have experienced 2 broken TB16 everdrives after prolonged use (over 12 hours continuous). The TB16 console still works. Only the Hu cards failed. I believe the reports of everdrive danger to be complete nonsnese. The risk has been debunked by a electrical engineer as well.

if you actually read the article, the only thing he talks about are the 3.3 volt chips used on flash carts and what could happen to them. the article says nothing about effects on the console itself (which is a very slight increase in operating temperature) its pure fud and you should be ashamed for spreading it

Yeah dude, that's just people trying to scare you. Krikzzz, the guy who designed the EverDrives, knew what he was doing, honestly the EverDrive is probably safer for your hsrdware than most official hardware, like the 32X.

I think it's a great idea to deviate into accesories one can buy, because it's something any of us watching this video can relate to and be interested in. You sure know your audience, GS!

I have multiple 8bitdo bluetrooth controllers and I really love them. No wires, minimal lag, and great retro feel for my 8-bit and 16-bit games. My one complaint was that they felt mismatched to my Neo Geo and MAME games - but they recently release an arcade stick so now my controller setup is complete. I'm a really big fan.

I would assume the "idiotic reason" why some games don't work in 480p is: Memory A 480i frame buffer uses half the memory of a 480p one.

The 8bitdo controllers are amazing. I have every game I would ever want on OpenEmu on my Mac. The controller fits in my bag with the laptop very easy and doesn't take up alot of room

22:08 The reason the Super NicoFami can only display famicom games in Composite video is because the original Famicom and NES’s PPU (Picture Processing Unit) could only generate Composite Video. Most clone consoles that can play NES games and have S-Video can’t output NES games in anything better than Composite Video as they emulate that part of the system. They will display if you play using S-Video, but it’s not true S-Video. They output Composite Video through the luma pin on the S-Video cable, resulting in an image softer and blurrier than Composite Video.

Seeing that Sega Power Base Converter brought back memories...I found one at an old Electronics Boutique around 1995, out of the box but wrapped in plastic for $4.95 so I bought it. However, having a Genesis Model 2 it wouldn't fit. So, I took it apart to see where the components were, then I took a hacksaw and removed the overhang of casing in the back. Sure it looked horrible but now it worked great on my Model 2. I still have it despite the fact I now own an actual Master System, and I must say it's quite durable. Even tested it on a Retron 5 and sure enough, it works there too.

thanks you guys, I bought the pc engine block due to this video, had to get the one with the piece of plastic though due to the other one being out of stock! I did have a cheaper more home made one from before where you had to spend ages figuring out how the pins connected to the back, this one looks so much better

Thank you for saying what you said regarding the 8-Bit Do pads syncing to the SWITCH.....I have sat here nearly ripping my hair out attempting to get the two components to speak to one another, and I thought I was the only one!
