Hey guys, I just want to weigh in on what the Genesis means to me. When the console was new, I was way into my NES but I gushed at all the photos of Genesis games in Gamepro magazine. I remember specifically seeing the in-depth Ghostbusters walkthrough (maybe it was EGM monthly?) and thinking how smooth the character sprites were. I craved to play that game. Other games that I want to mention that I think looked cool were James Buster Douglas Boxing and Altered Beast. This was before 16 bit Sonic for the most part. Hell, I think the Berlin wall was falling down around then. The Genesis was the coolest console out and I had to stick with my NES because my parents bought that stuff for me at that time. But man did I look at those game mags constantly. There was one time when I tried to weasel my way to a friend's house to play Genesis under the guise of getting together to study social studies, but his mom was on to us and actually made us study. She actually sat with us and made us read out loud! That was stupid. Moonwalker also looked cool. Anyway, by the time the SNES came out I looked past the Genesis and drank Nintendo's "we'll give you watered down awesome" kool aid. Now I look at the Genesis as a super cool moment in time. I'm a devoted Nintendo fan and will appreciate the Genesis (as well as the Sega CD, 32x, and Saturn) as type of coolness that wasn't my path. A friend let me borrow his Dreamcast while I recovered from a sports injury and it took weeks. Weeks of playing Soul Calibur 1! I appreciate you guys. Your magazine episode is one of my favorites. Take care.

Yeah, I share the same feelings as you, I'm happy that I got in a contest around in 2012 a Genesis model 2 with a reproduction cart of Mega Man: The Wily Wars, since then I have loved to play on it from time to time, I really hope Sega can do a good job with it's upcoming mini-console like how Nintendo did (unlike Sony with it's "fail"station classic), but, even if it fails to deliver the intended EXP. I have the real console, and if I want, I could get a model 1 easily at a game store close to my former elementary/junior/high school.
@Robert_Manners5 жыл бұрын
Yes you could not have put it better, without the existence of the SNES the systems would not have moved into the arena that produced the great games we had to play during the mid 1990s. Yes Konami were making profit short term but they were warned by their own people that Pachinko is a shrinking market (average age of Pachinko player is over 60), that Pachinko parlours are shutting down because profitability is getting thinner as their audience dies off and that heavy regulation against the "loophole" they use and machines that try to appeal to younger people (and fail) were planned. They ignored all warnings and chased short term profit and managed to do it so badly they made less money than when Pachinko was a side business for them. Konami now have no choice but to return to video games with the new regulations and the problem is they've alienated almost everyone who would work with them and have lost most of their greatest designers. Outstanding! Just put a pizza in the oven and find out that theres a new Game Sack video up...
Phantasy Star 4 when Alys meets her fate is probably the closest a video game has ever gotten to making me cry. Then it's pretty traumatic when she appears before you optionally later on.

A Six button controller, mind you, that is still emulated to this day by game controller designers in the "fightpad" series, using a single pad (no sticks) and 6 face buttons, with the only real change being the addition of two shoulder buttons to replace L2/R2|LT/RT. It's still super ergonomic and a great controller. I actually gave anfriend of mine in college an OG Sega Genesis one that had a USB mod on it and she used it for years to play skullgirls on PC, quite well I might add.

Joe c'mon man. Despite the rumor, Sonic 3's Ice Cap zone was NOT written by Michael Jackson. It was Brad Buxer who recycled the song Hard Times from his past in an 80s new wave band called The Jetzons. Hard Times is on KZbin so go listen to it, it's awesome.

Nice factoid! I'm sure I won't remember that name when I tell people in future, but I honestly surprised with all the retro gaming stuff I watch I hadn't heard the TRUE origin. Thanks :)
@3dmarth6 жыл бұрын
True, though I don't think that's what he meant. There were several other tunes that were removed from the 1997(?) PC version and/or Sonic and Knuckles, that Jackson could have worked on. The track used in Carnival Night is a standout, as it includes a sample from MJ's song "Jam" (though it comes out pretty garbled even by Genesis standards), as well as a little riff that matches that same song. Miniboss/Launch Base/Knuckles's theme are also possible candidates.

I'm hoping to get Sega Genesis Classics on the Switch for Christmas just because of some great games I never get to experience but mainly I really want it for Beyond Oasis, I rent it and really liking it but I can't find it when I was younger and I assume trying to get that physical copy of it on eBay and Amazon might be difficult of course so Sega Genesis Classics is the next best thing. Thank you for showing me more Genesis games that looks fun and interesting to play and amazing video!

"Greendog is the only game you need for the Sega Genesis" - that is a true statement, if only because I have literally every single other Genesis game (for now)

This is why I got a Genesis, instead of an SNES for Christmas 1993. I loved my NES, and the SNES does have some great games, but the Genesis always had better overall content. Also the SNES didn't have backwards compatibility.
@VirtualVernon6 жыл бұрын
@YTCensorsMe Poop LOL Omg yes i forgot that It was a mail in offer, I remember now that you mentioned it. We also got Streets of Rage 2 with it, but It may of not been a pack in game. I think my mom bought Streets of Rage 2 because we had to wait for Sonic 2. I was only 8, my older brother was 10, and older sister was 12. We begged for that system that Christmas. At the time we only had an NES, so it was so amazing to see the graphics. We opened all are presents and were so bummed when it wasn't there. But then she was like I think Santa left something behind the couch, and there it was. We all freaked out, and immediately set it up. My sister got the farthest that day, she was able to get to the final boss in Streets of Rage 2.

@Did Niggards Do That? The Genesis had better platforming, racing, shooting, and fighting games. SNES may of had the Genesis in JRPG's, but 10 amazing SNES games doesn't beat the Genesis library. Also you need to check out Beyond Oasis, its just like Link to the Past. I'm very surprised they didn't mention it. They always say they can only show the games they own, nut you would think one of them would of owned it.

@Did Niggards Do That? All those SNES games you mentioned are utter garbage. As was everything that came out on the SNES. Objectively speaking the SNES is the worst console of all time. That's not a subject up for debate.

Why did consoles lose the 6 - button face layout on control pads since the Sega Saturn? It would have been nice to have retained that AND also have the shoulder and trigger buttons.

okay man i have to know how the hell did you do that shot where you go inside the Sega and float around those chips? It looks too detailed to be 3d modeled, its to still to be an HD snake cam... i have watched this 10 time and i am blown away by that.... HOW DID YOU DO IT! (please?) oh and i have been watching you cats for a couple years now, i lover your show.

Gauntlet 4 has one of the best soundtracks of any game ever made! Kind of surprised you guys didn't mention that. Still tho, am glad you guys covered it. They pushed the living hell out of the Genesis sound hardware with this thing. I've never heard a Genesis title sound that freaking good before. It literally sounds like CD audio at times!
@skins4thewin6 жыл бұрын
@Ben Owen1 LOL don't be ignorant? Why, because my opinion differs from yours? Nah, none of those sound near as detailed as the Gauntlet IV soundtrack does, at least to my ears. They are good and all, sure, but they are not next level like Gauntlet IV is. Its soundtrack sounds comparable to those chiptunes you hear being made by the top guys in the scene, aka the ones who have learned to push the Genesis sound chip to the absolute limit. Some of that stuff goes above and beyond anything most thought the Genesis sound chip to be capable of. Gauntlet IV has a level of detail to the music that those games you named simply do not have. You are of course free to have your opinion, but I most certainly am not ignorant for not agreeing with yours.
