I found this amusing. KZbin was excited to report an upsurge in activity (which means more engagement and thus more channel growth). Not making this up, too funny! www.joeredifer.com/crap/dislikes.png EDIT: I imagine that probably 7 to 10 of those come from regular "dislikers" who thumbs down every video we put out just because we're us and they don't like us for whatever reason. We're used to it. The rest of y'all probably did it because we didn't like a game as much as you think we should, and that is also amusing.

That or the brightness in game or elsewhere wasn't turned up, or the voltage on the output was wrong for either the scaler or system. I could be wrong but I know for some scalers there's some weird mismatching that goes on, it's not a problem I've run into on the GBS Control over component to VGA so it's hard for me to say.

Try playing the PC version of Doom, using a modern Doom engine, like Doomsday, or GZDoom. You don't need to add any mods, but it improves the experience, I use high rez textures, high quality music, etc. You should also try the Brutal Doom mod, it changes the gameplay significantly, but for the better. All those other Doom games you played are crap compared to that experience. After that you should play the Super Nintendo version...
@SuperMarioGuy123459 жыл бұрын
Steve Rempel Playing doom with a modern doom engine does not mean you're playing 'the doom'. You're playing a custom version and remember, at the time, PCs could not handle such engine. And by guessing, if you actually play doom, you'd probably don't like it.
@steverempel85849 жыл бұрын
I doesn't matter what I'm playing it's still really fun, and has all the same levels, items and enemies as doom, and 90% the same game play, (there's an option to make it 99% the same gameplay, by not letting you look up or down, but I don't want to do that.) I have played vanilla doom, and although still good, the mods make it better, and I see no reason to use the vanilla engine anymore. In the same way I don't see the point on turning graphic settings down if your performance is good at high settings. Also, by your logic, any of the console ports of doom also are not 'the doom' as they would all use different engines than the original. The brutal doom mod is the only change big enough to have a truly new game, although I do really enjoy that mod, I don't always use it. The SNES version of Doom, and the console ports on this video, suck compared to the PC orignial... especially the SNES version, I still don't understand how I was able to beat that version....
@SuperMarioGuy123459 жыл бұрын
Steve Rempel Well, all the versions of doom(except for the 32x) look cool. I've played the PS version. I don't have an SNES, Genesis or 32x to actually experience. I've also played GZdoom and it's pretty fun, but it's just the same game just with added features. It's your opinion anyway.
@steverempel85849 жыл бұрын
Pixelized Dreams That sounds similar to my opinion. I use GZdoom with my brutal doom mod, and Doomsday Engine when I'm not using that mod. I actually prefer the Doomsday Engine, but when I set my mods up, Brutal Doom didn't work with Doomsday. I would recommend you try Brutal Doom, and Doomsday engine. I also play hexen and heretic. I don't like heretic as much, but I don't know why, and it's bugging me...
@steverempel85849 жыл бұрын
Pixelized Dreams Also you could try the SNES version on emulator, the whole thing is just a mess of pixels, especially when the enemies are far away. Password saving for each level. Terrible controls, bad performance, missing levels. Playing the SNES version of doom, on PC using an emulator is the peak of awsomeness. Actually, I did play Turok 2 and Golden Eye 64 (For N64) on emulator, using a modern FPS keyboard/mouse control scheme, that was fun. I own all those games on cartidge so it's legal.

Can't help it, but the impression that I got from this video is that the dislikes come from just being bad at the game . Especially felt like that from the FF 7 part. -Did you actually check the "configs"? Besides changing the battle system from ATB to Recommended or Wait, there's also an option to change the game speed there. -And it's actually hard to lose against Rufus at that part (It's not even halfway of Disc 1 lol), The Elevator Boss is kinda tricky as you can only do range attacks and seeing your Barret is dead it makes it harder. Aside from that, Congrats on the 100.000 Subs. Started watching you guys from the Left in Japan 1 Video.

@theSato10 жыл бұрын
zerogear976 I wouldn't say that it's rushing through the game just because you don't sit around in every zone for an hour more to grind. Good single-player RPGs don't make you do that, you get enough exp and such from naturally playing through the game to succeed, and grinding helps with extra/bonus stuff, makes bosses easy, etc.

I've tried for so many years (and so many versions!) to get into Mortal Kombat. Honestly, I like the settings, the characters, the lore, etc... but the gameplay to me feels like busy work. Too many weird button/directional combos that never feel intuitive and require multiplication table-level memorization to really pull off. Buttons for blocking and running also just confuse me; I'll stick with Street Fighter II controls. The Legend of "Cage"-- I mean, Kage. A local arcade when I was in high school had this coin-op, and I tried it maybe twice. As mentioned in this video, the controls felt floaty and never as tight as I think they should have been. In addition, I don't think that (novice) players ever really get the sense of where they're going or feel any sense of progression in the game. I've thought about snagging the NES version to try it again, but haven't yet pulled the trigger. Finally (for this comment), DK64. I want to play this and like it, but I get lost very early and lose interest. While I understand the more open world and use of hubs, DK64 hasn't felt like its Donkey Kong Country brethren-- easy to learn and difficult to master. Perhaps it's time to give this game another go. Thanks for another fun video, guys. LOVED the end. :)

It's not for everyone but FF7 is definitely one of the best RPG's I ever played. JazGalaxy
@steverempel85849 жыл бұрын
With the Final Fantasy games, you can usually speed up battles, there's an option for that in the options menu. At the fastest setting I usually can't choose my abilities fast enough and the enemies attack while I'm choosing, and it adds a bit of a challenge. Your gameplay footage suggested you weren't playing at this fastest level. You do need to enjoy those turn based battles to fully appreciate Final Fantasy games, usually that enjoyment comes from developing and designing your characters (In FFVII's case, how you choose to equip Materia, do you give them magic materia to cast spells, or not give them any so they are stronger physical fighters, and later in the game with more independent and support Materia, these choices get more interesting.)
@BrySkye7 жыл бұрын
Yeah, turning up battle speed and text speed to max is something I would recommend doing the second you get control. I think the defaults were setup to try and make it all a bit less overwhelming to people new to RPGs. The game might have benefited from having a couple of pre-selects when you select a New Game, rather than expecting people to dig through the config screen of the menu. There' also the option to change the Active Time Battle system to, well, Active (or Wait) instead of the default which is kind of a hybrid inbetween the two. When its set to Active, the battles won't effectively pause at all when you're selecting things in the menus or performing moves, and that goes for your enemies as well as your own team. Whilst that makes it harder, you'll spend a lot less time waiting and can pre-select your characters moves whilst other actions are taking place. It's perfectly fine not to like the game of course, this is just to say that one of the main critiques of a game given here is something that can at least be adjusted quite easily without hacks or cheats. Speaking of, if that's not enough, the PS4 port of the PC version has a literal fast forward button, lol. I have to admit to being quite fond of the materia system, in that its so flexible. Which also means it's incredibly open to abuse if you figure out ways to fully exploit it with certain combinations that can effectively make you unstoppable. It was also nice being able to basically full customise all the characters, so you could build a party based on your favourites, as opposed to needing to use ones with the exclusive special abilities you wanted at that point in time.
@drunkensailor1126 жыл бұрын
That was all fine in 1997 but not today. Turn based rpg battles are terrible now unless they are strategy rpg's
@Ducksauce336 жыл бұрын
@@BrySkye Yeah but to truly become unstoppable with materia like being able to beat the weapons let alone beating Ruby with out being hit. You will need to master, and clone allot of rare materias which takes a astronomical amount of grinding with out a game editor. You also don't get allot of them till later in the game. The fact you can miss some materia and never be able go back to get it kinda sucks.

You know Joe, if you wanted to give Doom another shot and see it as it's best, why not just play the PC version? Ultimate Doom on Steam is the same game, just with extra levels (and some inconsequential tweaks), and that's easily obtainable for $5, and getting the disc isn't too much of a hassle (if not that, it's at least at a pretty good price from what I remember). Are you that much of a stickler for console gaming? And Dave, what is your response to the large critique of DK64, which is that there is much, *much*, *_much_* too many things to collect even for the genre, and that to merely complete the game, the complete total of a majority of the collectibles are required to be collected (simpler version: to just beat the game, you must be super OCD and not leave a single thing un-collected with one or two exceptions)?

Game Sack Doom on the console definitely was a thing back then. There was a huge amount of hype in my group of friends when Doom finally came out to the 32x. Turns out every Doom port I've played is crap. But the thing is, even the PC original is not that good on the first play through. Slowly plodding about in nonsensical mazes searching for keys gets boring fast. Doom came into its own for me when I ran through the game at the Ultra Violence difficulty level with the knowledge of the stage layouts. That's when you get the "id" feel that is present for me in Doom and Quake. Fast, non stop carnage with superb audio and perfect pacing. I don't hate you for not putting in the tens of hours to get to that part. You're an adult with adult responsibilities who is in addition to that running a top of the line (my favorite for that matter) youtube channel.

I loved MK on the Genesis BUT I had to have the 6-button controller AND I didn't use my stupid thumb for the buttons, when you use a 6-buttion Genesis controller you should use your first three fingers on all three buttons, then you can do combos and such - but the downside is you can't hit the mode button, but I'm not sure if that does anything in this game.

Oh man, if your goal was to get to the over world you were SO close. After you beat that boss, you just quickly get out of the building and go to the first mini-game of the game where you ride a motorcycle and use Road Rash style combat to protect your party, finishing up with one last boss battle at the end of that mini-game, and then you're out. I'm don't recall exactly how long all of that takes, but I think it's something like 15 minutes, give or take, depending on how long you spend on the boss. But, to be honest, even though the game get's a lot better and adds a lot of new dynamics after that, and the story gets much deeper after that, if you don't like it by the end of midgar you probably won't like it in general.
@JazGalaxy10 жыл бұрын
I don't know if I can agree that the story in FFVII gets "deeper". Defintely more convoluted, but not "deeper".
@DJIndy10 жыл бұрын
JazGalaxy I'm not sure how you could argue it doesn't get deeper after that point. It's fairly shallow while still in Midgar. Afterwards they start fleshing out the back stories and connections of characters, start showing a bigger picture, add layers to motivations, the history of the planet comes out more and becomes more relevant, so on and so forth. It doesn't become the most compelling story ever told, but it certainly gains depth from what it is in Midgar.
@JazGalaxy10 жыл бұрын
Obviously I'm being cynical, but I feel like the straightforward plot of Avalanche vs. Shinra is the best part of that game. After that, as it delves into Cloud's identity crisis, it ceases getting deep, in my opinion, and just shuffles it's feet with layer and layers of misinformation and obfuscation to create a false sense of depth and meaning. I feel Metal Gear is guilty of the same thing. I feel like there is a difference between a plot actually being complicated, and simple plot being told in a very complicated way.
@DJIndy10 жыл бұрын
JazGalaxy Depth and complication are not the same thing, though complication can sometimes add to depth. There is also a difference between depth and good or appealing, though again, greater depth often helps with those qualities. Still, a lot of people find shallower, simpler stories more appealing, and they do sometimes have their benefits if done well. The Avalanche vs. Shinra plot line is fairly shallow, but that doesn't make it bad. I personally prefer where the story goes from there, including where it goes with the other characters aside from Cloud, but I also find stories about identity very appealing.

With FF7, it sounds like you're just not into console-style RPG's, cause random battles are kind of a major component of most games in the genre (hint: they're not wasting your time, you get exp through fighting monsters). FF7 isn't so widely regarded because of how well it holds up, it's widely regarded because of it's place in history and its influence on a generation or more of console-style rpgs. It's still a great game, but the gameplay has not aged well.
@GameSack10 жыл бұрын
I like plenty of console RPGs. Loved the Phantasy Star series. I know how random battles work and I know what they're for. They're just not interesting to me in FF7.

Game Sack alright, I just don't see how they're any different from any other rpg. The interface is pretty slow and clunky though. @rm2kmidi10 жыл бұрын
Sato I think SNES games just generally had more responsive controls than Playstation, and FF6 was just pretty well made. Xenogears didn't age quite as well, but it's so unique that it still stands out.

When I first bought it I spent about 15 minutes playing it and gave up. The controls didn't click with me and the races seemed difficult. When I replayed it I figured I would play a solid hour to get a proper feel for the controls. Lo' and behold it ended up being one of my favorite racing games. Once I mastered how to take the turns fast the difficulty felt exciting and I ended up beating it 100%.

Final Fantasy 7 has to be one of the most divisive games. I personally hated it when it came out and that is coming from someone who loved all the previous games on the NES and SNES so I was just shocked at the linearity of the game and how stripped down weapons and armour were, plus the amount of grinding for the Materia was just insane. I have played it again recently but again it just didn't appeal to me like FF 4 or 6. FF3 is my favourite though due to the massive amount of party customization as well as having a bit more freedom in where you could go in the overworld (though some areas were still blocked off it was still better than later games)

FF3 was a blast on the NES... Sage and Ninja class anyone? I think the FF3 party was the most godly of the whole series. Legendary weapons everywhere, cool secret towns and stuff, plus the biggest baddest coolest airship of the whole series. 3 part final dungeon, damn that was a cool game. Joe, I get where you are coming from with FF7. When I first played it, I too got so bored with the game that I stuffed it in my collection. I only picked it up again after my little sister played it and got past Midgar. The idea that the tutorial part of a game who last HOURS before it finally opened up is mindbendingly stupid in 97'. That's kinda a flaw with some Square RPG's. They spend so much time on their story and character development, that their combat/battles feels like an after thought. I find it ironic that everyone is giving you crap for not liking the game. You said you played it with , "no cheats, not guides. Just playing it the way it was supposed to be experience," and everyone telling you that you are supposed to change it to configurations.
@PickleRick91x7 жыл бұрын
sofakingimmature because there is a fucking option menu in the game that says battle speed. You don't need prior knowledge or a guide to figure out a options menu.
@AlexKidd6 жыл бұрын
You shouldn't have to immediately mess with the options menu though, that is a sign of a poor game usually. Also if you speed it up you're just playing a slow game faster than you're mean't too, it's not really fixing the situation. It's the equivalent of saying a movie is boring, & telling people to watch it on fast forward as the solution

@GameSack10 жыл бұрын
Sounds like I hurt someone's feelings! Listen, I played over 7 hours of this game. I gave it an honest second chance. If I don't like the game, why would I continue playing it? Do the core mechanics of the gameplay change? I highly highly doubt that they do.
@Eandia10 жыл бұрын
You didnt hurt my feelings, you struck me as someone I shouldnt take seriously. You're entitled to your own opinion of course, but saying a whole game is overrated when you havent played but a little bit of, thats a bit disingenuous dont you think? You could at least say "what" about the game you think is so overrated, because you havent even experienced the story so it cant be that.
@GameSack10 жыл бұрын
Eandia If you watched the entire review, I said what I liked and that was the characters, story (from what I saw) and the music. And I said I do not like the battles much at all. They also seemingly comprise the vast majority of the game. I'll agree that I haven't seen much of the story, but I have seen the large majority of what the gameplay mechanics are like. And I just do not find them very fun. If this were a movie, I could see your point. But otherwise it's like saying that I can't decide if Shinobi is a game I enjoy or not by playing the first two stages. I needn't play through an entire game to decide that I do not like it. If the game takes over 7 hours just to "get started" then there's something seriously wrong with the way the game is designed. The game is massively hyped. Many games are. Perhaps some of this led to my expectations being too high. I don't expect you or anyone else to change their opinions, that's not what this show is about. We can only give you our opinions. And many FF7 fans seem very, very bitter about it.
@Eandia10 жыл бұрын
I cant agree with that because RPGs do take longer to get going, since most are 30-40 hour affairs, in FF7s case it is introduced in Midgar but really comes off the ground when you get to the world map which you didnt do. For the same reason you are saying this game is massively hyped, I can say that you are conditioned or inclined to look for faults because you're tired of hearing how good people think it is and you went in with very high expectations. What drew me in was the story with the game and the only thing I reacted to was that "the game" was overrated when in reality you liked the characters, story and music yet only had a problem with the battles. Im not bitter about it, and I enjoy finding different opinions and discussing, I just think alot of people, such as you, put all ff7 fans into one group and are more inclined to find faults with the whole game, even though as you admit, you enjoyed a great deal about it except the battles.
@Adrian_of_Arcane_Lore10 жыл бұрын
Eandia The thing is with most FFVII fans that in the same way you guys think that people who dislikes FFVII is "inclined to look for faults", you are clouded with nostalgia and fail to see the game for what it really is. I have tried to play FFVII on multiple occasions but the mechanics of the game is just bad to the point of almost being broken. I've come much farther than the guy in this video (about 15-20 hours in) because I wanted to give the game a fair chance, but the vast majority of the actual play time was a pain and the story (so far) did not in any way make up for it. The biggest issue with the game is the battle system, it's painfully slow and awkward and basic enemies take far to much time to defeat, and there is entirely to many battles. Apart from that the worst parts of the game were the horrible minigames that you are forced to do time and time again. I would never recommend someone who have never played FFVII to pick it up, since the chance that someone without a previous relationship to the game would like it is minimal. If someone wanted to get in to the series I would recommend FFVI which is a game I loved and far superior to FFVII in my personal opinion. The mechanics in FFVII is stuck in this awkward timeframe where they mixed old and new ideas and therefore it's very dated. Games like FFVI and Chrono Trigger is more refined in many ways, and therefore there mechanics are more timeless and even though they are older games, the way the are played feels better in almost every way. It takes serious dedication and oversight of bad mechanics to get in to FFVII if you have never played it, and most players simply don't think that the pretty decent story is worth all the time that the game wastes.

The original Legend of Zelda on the NES I can't stand that game... I've only been trying out console games for the past 6 years (I was more into PC games as were most Europeans) and on the list of "must play" was LoZ and oh boy was it a bad experience... From "A Link To The Past" onward everything got a lot better (one of the best games I've played better) but the original was just so confusing and time consuming, unless you had a guide which would negate the point of playing. Maybe it's because I've tried it at a later time in my life where I don't have the time or patience to experiment as much as I used to. By comparison, I have wasted some time in point and click games (Currently re-playing Monkey Island) but I've wasted far less time in those than the masterpiece that is the original Zelda game...

Minigames that you were forced to play- that's what got me. I didn't enoy them, probably because I didn't have hours to kill breeding a freakin' chocobo. My problem with PS1 RPGS is definitely the time it takes. The annoying load screen between fight screen and world screen, the random battles, etc. At any rate, I think FFVII is weak in comparison to FFVI, which also took too long. Grinding before that Kefka fight! Graah!

Joseph Brandenburg THIS. Hell if I want to play rpg I'll do it on my NES instead, hey at least on my NES the loadtimes aren't 3 hours long. TFW when ogre battle, FF5 and most others games both on the snes and psx were much faster to play on the snes. As for FF7 itself it's definitely one of the weakest entry of the series. I'd pick the black sheep FF2 over it any day a week.

If it were that good, everybody had played it and everybody had talked about that time, just like they talked about FF7. But it was released around time when Baldur's Gate launched, I bloody picked that over FF7, and it aged much better than FF7, plus we have HD version already, when FF7 remake is still in making. It is funny that me, who is really into japanese games, would prefer Western-developed Baldur's Gate over japanese FF7 but I always considered Final Fantasy series as stuck in weird void between Japan and USA/Europe, not enough japanese but not enough western either. And I know only three games that are in this same spot and peaked my interest: Lollipop Chainsaw, Madworld and No More Heroes. Blimey, I am still waiting for Valkyria Chronicles to get some recognition (and not bad publicity like with that awful Valkyria Revolution), that is future cult classic for sure.

I'm guessing there wasn't a lot of poon running around that house back in '97 :)

I'm some years late but the game I'm about to say may come off as a surprise to most. Growing up I was raised on NES and Super Mario Bros like a lot of kids in my generation but I never got into Mario 3. I liked 1 and World the best, only ever played 2 and 3 on the All-Stars collection like a lot of people. I decided to play a bunch of NES games recently and try to beat them, having always felt bad for not giving Mario 3 a chance I did. It's a pretty long game, hard as balls getting up to world 7 and beyond, and I have to say I can see why it's a lot of people's favorite. I used to think Mario looked funny and the different suits were stupid but now I really have a newfound respect for the game. Challenging through reflexes, not necessarily through memory. Good music. Varied boss fights. Cool items/powerups. The Bowser fight was cool too.

I had a similar experience with Code Veronica, which was the first RE game I played. It was fairly difficult at first, especially given the limited ammo, but I eventually came back and finished it. It helps that the knife is a lot more useful than other games.

I wondered if the "DOOM is nothing to blow your wad over" line was intentional. In the original DOOM on PC the data files were called ".wad", or just WADs. Although capable/intended to wad together many maps and textures (episodes essentially), the word basically came to mean "custom map". I've downloaded many a wad. I'm unsure because I don't know if these guys only know console gaming or what.

Most memorable 2nd chance was maybe Sonic & Knuckles... Once upon a time I laughed at Sonic '06 and Werehog and thought "what the hell was SEGA thinking?" I got a present handheld with 20 Genesis games and tried playing S&K because it looked most interesting but I couldn't figure out how to get out of the chain traps and ended my game there. Later, after actually reading the manual I learned about the spin dash and enjoyed the game a lot. Today I have purchased most of Sonic games from 1 to Racing Transformed, make sprite videos and still see light in the future of the Blue Blur. Thank you for reading this pointless message and merry Christmas (in 17 days)!

Oh man, Bubble Ghost brings back some memories. It was a game I played a lot as a kid on my original Game Boy, my sisters usually hogged the good games like Super Mario Land 2 and others, they didn't like that game so I played it a lot. Definitely a hidden gem.
