The laser is one of the must underrated weapons in the series, the laser goes through the enemies hitting others behind them. The only downside is the fire rate, the laser and the cluster is all you need, just keep switching between the 2 rapidly and you will finish the bosses really fast

Agreed. Many novice players shun the laser in favor of spread, but laser is a top-tier weapon if used with finesse.

Contra III along with The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past were the two games which made me take the SNES plunge back in the early 90's. I was a pure Sega fanboy prior to that.

When I was little (like... 6-7 years old) and had only a Genesis, my neighbor got this game for his birthday, and when I saw stage 2 intro, it totally blew my mind! I thought that graphics in games could not get better than that! Good times... It was the first time I saw any kind of sprite rotation / mode 7 stuff

One of, if not my favorite SNES game. Played this since I was a child until college when I finally beat it in Hard alone. I took YEARS to learn you ahve to double tap the shoulder buttons to be able to rotate fast enough for the second "base" level. This is what prevented teen me from beating this game. Once I discovered that and I started experimenting with quick weapon switching it took lots of practice to actually beat it on Hard but it was *so rewarding*. To this day few games have given me that feeling, perhaps the Souls' series or the Ninja Gaiden series (both 2D and 3D). Scratch that, Devil May Cry 3 also gave me that feeling as well.

This is one of them love/hate games (a bit like ghost n goblins on nes) . I hate the game but love playing it , I'm 37 and still have never complete it. I am hoping Nintendo switch might do SNES games like they are doing with the nes and maybe I might find someone to play online and complete it lol.

Goddamn what an amazing game. The gameplay, the music, the atmosphere. I love in hard mode when you have to fight the alien's brain (edit, okay so you fight it in more than hard mode). So many memorable enemies, including the giant terminator that used to give me nightmares. But man are you guys terrible at it!

Contra III: The Alien Wars is the best Contra game, even better than Hard Corps. Its level design is unmatched.

Indeed. While Hard Corps is more elaborate, the level design does take it down a notch. Oddly enough, the Game Boy Advance port of Contra III was in fact a mashup of the two games. It replaced the top-down levels with two from Hard Corps.

@@logria10 Honestly though, the gameplay of Hard Corps was even better than III's. Being able to carry 5 different weapons, slide and ride more vehicles was something surreal. But Alien Wars' dark atmosphere couldn't be beat.

I never beat this game when I was a kid. But thanks to a little save state action on my SNES Classic, it's now under my belt! Lol. And no, I'm not even ashamed to admit it. I wanted to see the end. Maybe someday I'll do it.

Oh, and don't forget to use the R button so that you can steady yourself, and shoot at objects without moving left and right

Lol no, Hard corps is great with all the chars, paths and endings, but his level design is too weak if you compare it with Contra 3. Even Contra 4 has better level design. Also, Contra 3 on hard is the hardest Contra game.

There's an extra layer to the last boss fight on hard. He gets like an armor case, grows legs and chases you up the tube. I have to kill him while hanging off the chopper. It pretty kick ass.

I remember this game. I got good enough to play on hard difficulty and clear it without dying once. Doubt I can still do that without a couple dozen hours of practice though!

Yay i love meet some Super Probotector! i mean Contra Spirits,i mean Contra 3. the japanese version is more forgiving because it lets you use codes and you also have unlimited continues. oh and my best advice to play this game on hard(you have to play it on hard to see true final form of the end boss and the best ending)is to get 2 C guns and constantly changing them while using them, that works pretty well to beat enemies and some bosses fairly quickly, and it also allowed me to beat this game on hard without dying, no joke. i find funny how PeanutButterGamer and Space Hamster coincidentally made a video playing this game recently xD
