Last of us part 2 is by far the most impactful game I have ever played...it's okay if the gamescoop crew did not like the narrative because it can be divisive but I thought it was one of the most impactful stories I have ever experienced in a video game. What's astounding is no body really talks about the gameplay because the moment to moment gameplay was amazing And Daemon with all due respect you shouldn't have spoiled the game in that way for people who did not play the game...it's far more complex than what you said

I was so turned off by how reductive, specifically Daemon was being about the story in TLOUP2. You can literally break down any story like this, add some eye rolls, cut away any nuance, dismiss multiple layers, and you can make it all look and sound bad. The first game can be reduced to just man and girl don’t get along, she has cure, they get along later, Man saves girl at the end. It’s just so reductive. And also almost every story nowadays has a clear cut hero and villian in it. We get dozens of them a year. This idea that you can’t possibly engage with a story that doesn’t have any heroes, probably deserves the biggest eye roll. But whatever, It’s fine, people have their opinions.
@PeterAtkinson4 жыл бұрын
@@carlosperez7646 I completely agree Carlos! I don’t mind if Daemon doesn’t like it but like you mentioned, saying nothing happened story wise is just not true. All the problems people have with The Last of Us 2 is because they didn’t like the direction the game went in. It’s much more bleak than the first game and there’s no one to root for. That’s what I loved about the game, the juxtaposition between Ellie and Abby’s storylines. The gameplay is arguably the most tense I have ever felt in a video game to date!

MUCH AGREED. To say that nothing happens narratively in TLOU2 is just flat out wrong, whether you take that subjectively or not. The same arc that Ellie and Abby both go on is dynamic, and for their journies to run parallel to each other humanizes them and validates their respective lives and all that incorporates it (homes, loved ones, etc). Does this storytelling take away agency from the player and make them uncomfortable? Yes, which is where I'll admit my bias towards storytelling as opposed to full agency in videogames (that's a movie, not a videogame, I know). But to say that Ellie and Abby end the game where they started is a complete disregard to their respective (grueling and agonizing) development arcs. One of my favorite realizations is how Ellie mentioned her fear of ending up alone in the first TLOU and where she ends up at the end of TLOU2.

I agree with Damon about TLOU 2. It is such a bleak boring trudge that goes on for too long being forced to do stuff you do not want to do, but are forced too; then stopping doing things you want to do. As Damon said, TLOU 2 is a HUGE disservice to the first game. I feel like the first game is a palette cleanser after the careless slog of the second game. I now have become no longer a naughty dog fan and it’s a huge stain on the first game.

This is probably the most unbiased take I’ve heard about TLOU2. Beyond the “oh I just didn’t like how the narrative went”, it’s how the narrative was told also. You were meant to feel things you couldn’t because of the game’s structure. Really good take! Still is a technical feat. Looking back at it now, wow, this game can pass of as PS5 even.
@thefearmakerlive4 жыл бұрын
My disagreement with Sam, Daemon and Justin on TLOU 2, is yes, you can make something where the characters aren't always likable, because if you want to talk about realistic storytelling, people aren't always likable. And why would you only want to play stories about people making decisions you agree with? 1st that isn't the case, because we've all played games where we don't necessarily agree with every decision of the protagonist, even if we just think it's a dumb decision, 2nd, wouldn't that limit what games could narratively do, as the participation is about engagement, not just always wish fulfillment. And yes, Ellie did make bad decisions, but in the moment, to deal with her pain and trauma, those were the right decisions for her. And if you didn't notice, everyone who Ellie or Abby kill in the game attacks them or is looking to attack them , but 2 people, Joel and Nora, and we see the effects both of those situations have on them. Then you're totally missing the mirroring of the two stories as it's one person diving deeper into her trauma until she consciously makes a decision to stop and another person who thought a particular resolution would free her of her pain, but found out it didn't, and we see how she actually begins to heal. The game is never about revenge, it's about people dealing with trauma, and how decisions, both good and bad, have repercussions. (SPOILERS)In fact, to counter Daemon's point, Abby is never on a hunt to kill Ellie, when Abby and Ellie meet in that Theater, Abby doesn't know who's responsible for the death of her friends besides Tommy. A lot of the game is about Ellie's obsession with Abby, but it's also about Ellie's survivor's guilt, her complicated relationship with Joel, & maybe the fact that she's reckless because she wants to die. Abby leaves Ellie alive twice, as Abby has a traditional heroes journey arc after the 1st time you meet her. And Ellie at the end makes a conscious decision to not be a monster, to try and forgive, which were the last words she shared with someone she loved. I know Zelda may not have such layered storytelling like this, but to act like the characters don't progress throughout the story or that nothing happens, when you have getting to Seattle, exploring and finding out about the WLF vs Scars war, the Dina and Jesse situation, the reveal of the last few years of the relationship between Ellie and Joel, Finding Owen, Yara and Lev, The Rat King, escaping the island, and so much more, is kind of disingenuous, and not true. Maybe too serious and dower for the entertainment that you all like, and hey, like what you like as this is all subjective. But let's not act like the depiction of trauma and violence, and addiction and love in this game, beyond the experimental, for big budget games, narrative structure, isn't impressive. And by the end, how can you not like both protagonists, who are both on a path to healing and being better versions of themselves.

Assassins Creed isn’t about stealth. It’s like thinking all Templars are riding horses, with the Red Cross, looking for the grail, and etc. Also Origins, Odyssey, Valhalla are prequels. The whole Assassin part started in Origns, Odyssey was about the Isu, Valhalla leads into the first AC. People take Assassins Creed a little to literally. The AC are about letting us be free, while theTemplars believe in control.

The Last of Us Part II is, hands down, one of the best games ever made in my opinion. It is a masterpiece in almost every way. I appreciate the different points of view here, but rarely have I been so stunned with such poor assessments from a panel. It is a disservice to the game that it cannot be better represented on this episode from a panel that includes someone who actually shares the opinion that it is a pinnacle of storytelling. I mean, Damon... bless your heart, but "nothing happens in the story"? Would you levy the same the criticism for The Mandalorian, the plot of which literally is a Mandalorian needs to take a creature to a Jedi? When movies inevitably fade into less and less relevant vehicles for storytelling, and is ultimately replaced by video games in terms of storytelling quality, it will be because games like TLOUP2 paved the way for the medium to evolve into something more important than it has traditionally been.

If you think TLOU was better than ghost of Tsushima you need to take your head for a wobble

I think they just hit people differently. Ghost had such a beautiful world and I enjoyed it (the duels especially), but I couldn't believe how draining the lack of variety in mission structure was. "Defeat the mongols" was driven into my head so often it felt like I was playing a very pretty 360 era game. I cannot think of a less interesting protagonist than Jin Sakai, either. They are both good games that I think personal preference influenced a lot. I can't bring myself to finish every quest line in ghost and I want an update so I can play TLOU2 a fourth time.

Id like to play TLOU2 but without the cut scenes. Gameplay is king but story is worthless.

And what happens in LOU1 then? its a glorified companion mission, with both Joel and Ellie living. After all you go through in part 1, there is no vaccine created and Ellie lives. So basically nothing happens there too. When u simplify the story to that degree, yeah it sounds bad, but that's not entirely fair. You guys sound like the internet trolls hating the game for silly reasons ("agenda puShInG!!1). That's disappointing. You absolutely can dislike the game all you want, but selectively using that critique, when it can just as easily be applied to the first game, and heck, so many other great games out there, makes me just want to unsubscribe from this channel.

I can understand why children love animal crossing, but adults? It’s so boring.
