The Atari GSP is an awesome device. I love retro gaming and I was able to add additional 2600 and 7800 ROMs. I know I can add NES and other king of ROMs, but for my personal needs, that's plenty for now. I will consider the handheld depending on what software it comes pre loaded with.

Jon, As fast as I'm concerned you are the preeminent expert on all things GSP/GSG. I've been obsessed with the GSP all year due to your videos, and as soon as I see one pop up that has any mention of anything GSP/G related I stop everything I'm doing and watch. One bit of speculation that I might have missed- If we can connect the GSG to our tvs, will that mean it will support the current and future GSP/3rd party controllers?

It's a paddle ... not an arcade spinner. When released, it stops dead in its tracks - it doesn't keep spinning. Furthermore, unlike a spinner, it has extremities to the left and right - it can only be turned a set distance in a given direction, before it'll hit the extremity

Just about to start watching the video... I'm most excited about this product compared with any formal GSP2 or the 7800+. It all depends on the price and hopefully it won't compete in the same price bracket as the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 or even the current Switch new since it'll have much lower spec hardware and resolution likely. Price is the key for me.

@@GenXGrownUp I think it's a solid MSRP for retail at $149 assuming that it truly is the all in one retro portable that can play both 8bit and 16bit games perfectly at 60fps (that's all I expect from it personally). It'll be competing with the multitude of Chinese unlicensed portables with similar screens (but admittedly NOT all the various input methods) at $75-$150 instead of the Switch/Switch2. It was a pipe dream to hope for it to come in at $99 but given the GSP's price drops not long after release I hope it'll be a bit lower as well at places like Costco again in the US.

There is very affordable technology (FPGA) that eliminates lag and can even eliminate slowdown in some games that originally had it depending on the core used.

All the usual retailers I go through down here in Australia got nothin yet, all the Gamestation Pro stuff is out there but none of the portable biz. One thing I do think that My Arcade may do is push out the new firmware at the same time as the release of the Portable? have to check for a 1.04 on their site. And I'm hoping to see that new controller they showed off aswell that you covered, 3 buttons is perfect for my Sega library... to think I had my eyes on one of those Ayn Odin 2's but I think I'd suffer from selection paralysis 😅 probably better to save the cash and invest in the Portable instead.

This thing looks cool. I don't actually like handhelds because my eyesight is terrible but the HDMI output might change my mind. I own a Gamestation Pro and was hoping it could replace the RPi that is sitting in my modified Arcade1Up full size cabinet. Unfortunately the lack of button remapping has killed that dream.

My feeling is that the Game Station Go is pricing itself out of the market with an R.R.P. of $150. The soon to be released Evercade EXP-R is hitting that sweet spot of $99 which I think is about right for a budget handheld. Also, compared with the Atari Super Pocket which is going to be $50, it just doesn't add up. Yes I know it'll have a paddle & trackball, which is a nice to have but it's possible that Evercade could come up with a spinner/trackball offering for the VS-R moving forward. I may be way off with this but I do understand that being able to add roms is important to certain people and maybe that's who they're aiming at. I still hope it meets or even exceeds expectations and sells well for My Arcade. Keep up the awesome work Jon!

IMHO not apples-to-oranges, but more of a types-of-apples question. Granny Smith vs. Red Delicious maybe. 😉 As you noted, a number of different Atari-centric handhelds are in or entering the market, and I believe the serve different players. Things like the Super Pocket will satisfy one segment of the market, while the GSG is being positioned as a more versatile and premium Atari emulation handheld. No one product can be all things to all people, so having options can only be good for Atari fans. And yes, I'm also eager to get my woodgrain Atari Super Pocket in-hand!

Its on the left so it may take a bit to get used to for me, unless they provide an option to flip the screen (and the console) putting it back on the right. Viewers have been commenting on that since January. My guess is that since it has an HDMI out, there's no need to reshape the video for widescreen TVs. Not sure the widescreen wastes space, though. A 4:3 would've probably just been smaller in the same height device.

I hope this is good. I really wanted to like the GSP. It was the perfect machine for me. No need for carts (I already collect other stuff) and you can add your own games. My biggest issue is that there is always a latency with controller inputs. Even when the/a controller is plugged in and it bothers the heck out of me! Hopefully they fix that so I can replace it and enjoy Atari with friends again.

IF they get the ergonomics right and if I can dump my 5200 games and they just work with the keypad (for keypad games obviously) and if we can remap too, this will be a gamechanger cause it has all the control types built in. I am cautiously optimistic, heck, even a little excited. One thing I could not tell, do you know if there are shoulder buttons for 6 buttons or only the 4 face ones? If it ends up with the usual community emulator updates etc, without 6 buttons it won't be so good for snes and genesis. Also isn't 7 inch a little large? Lynx games will look very pixelated, I think for retro games I prefer 4 or 5" TBH. And yes I am talking about screen size LOL.

The screen size of 7" is actually a great size for me as I can game without having to wear reading glasses given typical HUD sizes for 8 bit games. I'm ok with pixels personally as long as the scaling is done well and uses as much of the screen as possible.

I'm mostly just hoping for a truly quality track ball for Missile Command and Centipede. I'm not really concerned re: paddle vs. spinner. I never had any problem with the CX30 Paddle controllers, particularly because they had such a wide sweep. I'm old skool so I don't have any use for shoulder buttons. They just get in the way in the handheld I have. Also, I've found that a D-pad doesn't make a particularly good joystick. It would have to be a really special D-pad. But, YES, I'll bite! I'm really mostly interested in the very earliest "retro" games: Atari arcade, 2600, 400/800, 7800. I'm curious about the other games that were around then, like Intellivision, but I don't need to be trying to play any PlayStation games on this thing. At least not for a good long time.

Hopefully the A B buttons can be swapped for NES games. I have a few My Arcade handhelds and micros and this is a big issue I have with them. As I'm sure you know, A B is not the proper configuration for NES games.

I really wanted to buy the 2600+ but its lack of support for running roms which you legally own, made it impossible for me to buy it. Now the shocking thing is that they license a thirdparty who does the things right (sd card support). What I would like is the GSP with the 2600+ skin and original Atari controllers. But nobody seems to be able to release that. I might consider this new GSG, though, if they got the spinner right and if it supports adding roms with a sd card.

All I have to say is...Most portable consoles barely get the Dpad right. I'll be shocked if all 5 sets of inputs work great (dpad, trackball, paddle, numbers, buttons). Has potential.

The system is well designed, but the price is way too much for a retro gaming handheld, especially with the Nintendo Switch lite now cost less than 200 bucks. The only thing that will make it worth buying, is the included Atari games particularly 8 bit and Lynx games!

It really needs an actual D-pad, not a circle with a plus on top. Meaning like the NES, SNES, and not like the CX78+.

How is that functionally different? If your finger can feel the plus, I'm not sure how eliminating the ring would change behavior.

@@GenXGrownUp The plastic around the plus-shaped D-Pad acts a brace where you can position your finger, particularly in the diagonals, without unintentionally pressing the D-Pad. It gives finer control than if a whole circle is exposed.

Speaking of button controller remapping I'm surprised the Wii U is the only system with button controller remapping for the virtual console games. The games you control is such a weird layout that some games were really annoying to play with it so that wii could have definitely used it And then while the switch has global button remapping it doesn't have remapping for the old school switch online games which is really dumb. Not having button remapping will always get a thumbs down from me.

Now that they own the rights to intellivision how about an intellivision usb controller, that would take care of the cores that need a controller with a numpad. To back up the other comments, mame 2003 plus support for spinner and trackball in mame would be perfect. Is there start, select and superkey on it? Build it with a chip that supports batocera, leave the atari branding, boot from sd?.........maybe make it a push pull spinner.....right analog stick...getting close to perfect to run everything from 1970 to 1993. I love the 70s yellow and orange, make the rest black?...some atari 2600 ridges in it? Chrome rainbow strip for the 2600 jr, 5200 and 7800? flashing volcano button?

@@GenXGrownUp You're right. I love the Atari hardware asthenic and I was describing a dream handheld for classic gaming. But to cover the whole Atari console/arcade catalog there should be a spinner and analog stick. The push pull spinner was selfish. Atari never used one. The inclusion of a trackball and paddle open up so many more accurate control options than anything offered by companies like ambernic.. I'll grab one.
