Two interesting/fun points to add to this that don’t change the overall message of the video: 1.) Melvin Capital, the hedge fund targeted by name by r/WSB, was also the hedge fund that heavily pushed shorts of Tesla. It’s CIO spoke out publicly against Tesla value. Elon had pure motivation to bankrupt them when he wrote that tweet. 2.) The naked shorting of GameStop is scummier than people realize. The hedge funds knowingly sold naked shorts to drive down stock price in an attempt to bankrupt the company. If the company ceases to exist, you don’t have to cover the short, it’s just pure profit. They weren’t just betting on devaluation, they tried to force a company out of existence without considering the consequences

The thing I find so fascinating about people who are so defensive about Gamestop is that they fail to realize that Gamestop is an absolete company, that themselves know are obsolete, and have thrown in the towel on trying to salvage a buisness model. Same for AMC. Movie Theater business has to change completely to survive and AMC and the current business is just unsustainable as we move forward. I have no understanding of the rationale of buying any amount of these stocks.

Some people did it because they saw an opportunity to make money due to the amount of naked shorting, and a lot of people just wanted to screw over hedgefunds. The very first guy who bought a substantial amount of the stock ended up becoming pretty famous. He turned 50.000 $ into 50.000.000 $.

re 6:25 the story behind this is still one of the most insane financial stories of the modern era and outside of Germany no one talks about it. Basically Porsche tried to take over VW with massive financial shenanigans, then VW ended up buying up Porsche. Important to note that both companies were basically owned by the same family clan Porsche/Piech, and somehow the end result is that the Porsche Family holding now is the majority owner of VW while VW took over the actual car maker Porsche. Also part of VW is owner by the german state and part of the Porsche holding is now owned by Qatar. So Porsche had to sell Porsche to VW to then buy VW.

The entire point about "naked shorts" turned out to be completely false. All the shorts were legitimate. A short interest being big doesn't mean any shady stuff was happening, it just means that after the first borrower sold the share, the new buyer let someone else borrow it. Basically, Holder A lends it to Lender 1, Lender 1 sells it to Holder B, then Holder B lends it to Lender 2. All of that was perfectly legal. It is also very possible that Holder A and Holder B were the same person if they were lending their stocks out for passive income while trying to buy more.
