As an audiophile, I'll break it down like this. This is long, I apologize, but very thorough. 1) ALL headphones have directional audio. Every single one. Its called binaural technique. Its a recording device and provides positional audio on all sound systems. Do NOT buy a headset based on "surround sound" or "positional audio" or whatever crap they shill. 2) You will not really notice a difference between a 50$ headset and a 50$ gaming headset typically. If your budget is low, I would actually recommend a gaming headset due to the convenience 3) gaming headsets, as a generality, are far more comfortable for extended wear over high end audio headphones. I currently own pioneer HDJ-1500, HDJ -2000, ATH M50x, Beyerdynamic Beyerdynamic DT-990's, and AKG K240. (Why? Because they are typically each used for separate things. AKG for monitoring is amazing, the rest have a distinct sound signature that colors the sound). I have also owned razer kraken and steel series siberia v2. The Kraken's were the MOST COMFORTABLE headsets i've ever worn. Bar none. They sound "ok" I guess, but nothing compared to my higher end headsets. IF you are JUST GAMING and wearing headphones for a long time, its hard to go wrong with the razers. The all plastic construction concerns me, but not an issue if you are extremely careful Why buy a higher end headphone? Well. Sound quality. If you can "A-B" test them, you will hear a REMARKABLE difference in sound quality. Until you experience it yourself, its quite easy to be skeptical. Most reviews on gaming headsets tend to be from the ignorant consume base that has frankly not experienced higher end headphones before. "OMG IT SOUNDS AMAZING!"... not quite. For the money here are some recommendations to get you started. The sub 100$ market changes daily, and has too many competitors to mention, and typically you are better off just getting the gaming headset anyway. 100$ (do NOT buy these at full price, they go on sale ALL THE FUCKING TIME) ATH M50x -> pleasing audio signature that doesn't come at a huge cost. These are probably the most commonly recommended headphones of all time lol 130-150$ Pioneer HDJ-1500 -> these... these punch WAY above their price point. Comparable to 300$+ headphones in terms of audio quality. The problem? They use special ear pads that focus the bass (it literally will rattle your head, these do not distort, ever) which after extended usage causes some pretty bad ear pain (they pinch against the edge of your ear on your head, and they clamp down hard). The sound quality is absurd for the money. The noise isolation is unparalleled as well. Seriously, crank them full blast, and a person sitting right next to you cant hear you. If you're into EDM or heavier Rock styles, these headphones are the absolute best sounding you can get under 300$ Pioneer HDJ-2000's use identical drivers to the 1500, but have a larger design and are much more comfortable (much more expensive too), but the trade off is you lose that focused bass sound, which is unfortunate. The price difference is frankly not worth the jump. For 300$ there are better options. I bought a used pair for 80$, only reason i looked at these. 200$ Beyerdynamic DT990's -> these are EXTREMELY comfortable (almost as good as the razer haha), and have a very "Clean" and "open" sound. The bass is awesome, but lacks the focus of the HDJ-1500's. They have almost no sound isolation, so be wary of that. These sound amazing for dynamics and movies. If youre into classical music, holy crap these are the best sub 500$ headphones you can get, but i doubt this is the demographic for that. For the average gamer/music enthusiast, you are probably better off with the hdj or m50x. 300$ Philips Fidelio X2 -> holy crap these are the "total package" headphones. I got to play around with a friends set, and they are on my "To buy list". They are comfortable, reliable, durable, sound AMAZING, and have a very pleasing aesthetic. Win-win-win. The only downside is the slightly high cost. Above the 300$ range you start getting into the world of diminishing returns. A 10,000$ headset wont really sound 9,700$ better than a quality 300$ set. There are SOME exceptions, but most 300+ headphones become what we call "reference" sounding. This means you are getting closer and closer to what it would sound like in a "live" situation, as it was recorded and mastered. Most people dont actually care for this style of headphones, they want some "coloring" (think extra bass or midrange here).

+JgHaverty I actually have to commend you for the detailed explenation. some effort was put into it ^^ Do you have an opinion of the Turtle Beach gaming headsets per chance?
@JgHaverty8 жыл бұрын
Domyras My experiences with turtle beach's have been mostly negative. My local best buy has a headset booth where you can try on tons of different headsets. Admittedly most of my perception of them is purely anecdotal, and not from long term ownership They feel incredibly cheap for the lower cost models, and the "higher end" models are hilariously overp riced for the quality you are getting. I put on a pair of the "Elite 800"s and I almost laughed at how bad they were. 400$? The nerve they have. They werent worth 100, much less 400. For 130$ those HDJ-1500's I told you have a metal construction, with magnesium hinges, 50mm drivers, and you can honestly FEEL the difference, not just in audio quality. The razer kraken pro is extremely comfortable, has a nice style, and sells for ~60$ now (best buy has a set for 60$ right now). For cheaper headsets, I would very much recommend the USB version. Fixing and repairing a USB cable is FAR easier than the filament cable in analog headsets, and the cheaper you go, the more likely it is that that will be the failure point. Whats your budget?

+AsianInvasion So ignorant... The reality is you haven't tried any other headphones than the g633 so you're biased towards them. While not related to gaming headsets, I have a funny story. My roommate's girlfriend bought him a pair of Beatz headphones, he had them for about a month before they broke. He asked if he could borrow mine, the next day he gave them back asking where I'd gotten them. Apparently he thought they sounded way better than his Beatz ones did. The look on his face when I said I bought them for $20 at Walmart was priceless.

Amps: Increases the voltage of the signal coming from any audio source, could add some color (read: very moderate distortion that sounds pleasing) depending on what type it is, and allows you to A) Power headphones high impedance and B) increase the volume of your audio much more than you'll ever need.

Beats are the "spinners" of headphones, they SHOUT "I've got more debt than you do and far less common sense". I've seen more people out and about wearing beats around their neck like a necklace than I have actually using them. Its no wonder Apple bought Beats, they are all about shiny cheaply made products that are just a fad for fanboys, and those who can't bother to put a little time into learning how to actually use their products.

Good point on surround sound being achievable on regular headphones with the correct software. I've been using my pair of Sony MDR-7506 for a few years now, they're dirt cheap considering the overall quality and these paired with Razer Surround gave me a more than great spatial experience. I highly recommend gamers to have a look at audiophile or monitoring headphones, go for the classics like the DT-770, these cans are rock solid, they sound incredibly sharp and you'll have replacement parts for over 10 years (The MDR-7506 are 25 y/o and are still manufactured, as well as replacement parts).

Hi LTT, I found that interesting. I have a pair of Sennheiser HD515's and I was intrigued by your surround sound driver trickery comments. My question is: How does one achieve this effect in a headphone set such as mine. No specific driver for 5.1 on this model is available? One assumes it's a timing algorithm which can be applied to any stereo drivers depending on impedance and several other things. I think I just answered my own question!

If you don’t care about sound quality buy these headphones called the Phenom Pro by Evo core it has Leds, “gamer aesthetic”, and a boom mic that folds in. I bought mine at Tj Max for $24.99(I’m not an audiophile but they have 50mm drivers and decent sound quality from my 1-week of experience) They are extremely comfortable and durable(they can make your ears hot from your 3 hour sessions (like any closed or on ear headphones) of cup head but I usually play only 1 or 2 hours at a time. Overall, they are a great pair of budget gaming headphones with decent mic and sound quality along with “gamer aesthetic” in the form of green leds and green and black coloring. I’ve been looking for a nice pair of budget gaming headphones (with a boom mic) and I was look for anything around 60 or less and I originally was going to buy the Corsair void pro rgb but I found this a much better option.

for anyone who actually gives a shit about sound, you won't get some shit-tier "gaming" headsets. You'll invest in some actual headphones and buy a separate mic.

Sony wh 1000xm2? They are about as good or even better than the bose, although the bose is really really comfy.
@kbrecords45187 жыл бұрын
I have the Sony headset and the mic is super bad for gaming so you'll probably get shit from your teammates saying "your mic is ass" other than that audio is perfect and so is comfort
@alecwhatshisname51706 жыл бұрын
Jonathan Rodriguez yeah, because they're headphones, not a headset. They are used with an external mic.

Special EDy ditch bluetooth headphones for a good old analog cord. Less delay and interference is better than the convenience of no cord imo.

I deviated from gaming headset about 3 years ago when I got my Bose Quiet Comfort Noise cancelling headphone. I game on the MMORPG so I tend to game for hours for the raid night. The headphone is very comfy and at times, I forget that I am wearing it. I game in a lousy environment with fans and portable AC unit in my room so noise cancelling works very well with it. I've gone thru countless of gaming headset in my life and the Bose lasting longest of all. It still works after 3 years and still comfy. The only thing I have to gripe is the extensive wires. I use detachable MIC with it so I have wires running everywhere.

Gaming headsets are awful. Logitech expensive ones are dogshit. just buy normal headphones if you want portability and speakers if you can.

Godin The Killer Its FAAAAR superior to any headset and tbh it pretty much is end all; unless you're spending thousands on some uber high end dolby atmos setup.
@btoiscool8 жыл бұрын
Uk Gamer 1: I don't use headsets for anything. 2: No, it's not. From what I've heard, speakers of equivalent price usually sound worse, depending on the room, and treating a room is usually costly, because most walls are complete and utter SHIT.

@Daniel Borsos i think the term gaming headset is designed for gaming especially for fps. The main idea is to put the headset directly and use it without any setting. I believe if you buy studio quality onr and set it for gaming you can get it.

The most important thing that headsets offer over a set of phones is onboard sidetone capability. Yes, it can be done through software, but there's typically a huge lag that is effectively a speech jammer.

There are adults who play games and use gaming headsets... Considering over 18 is an adult, as some pro players out there. Simple as that, And im only 15 and have m50x's from Audio Technica, and im not considered an adlut yet...

I've got a Plantronics 780 headset here as it is one of only a few that will fit around not on my ears so my ears don't hurt and it is bigger so my boof head doesn't cause a headache as much. I have to say that the audio quality in calls/conferences, music and gaming has been exceptional from them (especially music). They are USB based and I'd grab another pair any time if these broke, they're bloody awesome.

Having headphones and a separate mic also have the advantage of not having the microphone 1cm in front of your mouth and not only is that good for reducing breathing sounds, but also the echo of the sound you have because the mic picks up on audio coming from the cans.
