I have a theory that since GTA Vice City, Rockstar decided that it'd be "immersion breaking" for you to fly to a connected piece of land and see nothing but low poly terrain and bad textures, hence why they decided to stick with floating cities/states. The reason why they made out-of-bounds terrain in RDR2 is because you rarely fly a lot in the game, even in that Hot Air Balloon mission. And even if you did with cheats, most of the terrain is non-collide able. (Except the unfinished parts of Mexico)

5 has a good approach as well, were you can technically go as far as you want, but your vehicle breaks down and a shark kills you. A land border could work in the same way. You drive out in the countryside, surrounded by deep forest, car breaks down (if you're in a plane or helicopter engines die and you crash) then once on foot a bear spawns and kill the player.

yeeeah, I kinda like this idea too. I don't know, it gives you that curiosity and a flavour of mystery to the world's game. As well as it creates an impression that the game's world is bigger than just the settin of the game. Otherwise you get this feelin of isolation, I hope I explained it any comprehensibly 😅

​@jesusramirezromo2037 Yeah it was possible if they cut back the physics engine. Lessened the euphoria physics. Less unique NPC actions and scenarios. Look up all the random Scenarios that can happen in IV. This puts a huge load on the engine, and your CPU. Lots of scripts running. Also they got rid of a lot of the dynamic shadows. GTA V is actually easier to run and will run better on lower end hardware because of this. It's also 64-bit. IV is limited to 32-bit. Can only ever use 4gb vram.

I find it very interesting that even though The Carraways aren't present in GTA 4, they are still consistently being mentioned. This sparks an idea that maybe they will revisit Liberty City in a future title and expand on the Liberty State.

Yeah, I know but New York City is very congested tbh, and don't mind if it's congested if they based on such or make it congested as a vibe of the game, but not make it too congested and make areas to escape from such, especially story wise, that's why I like GTAV map wise but even though I also have some gripes with GTAV map after exploring it for 10+ years to the point that I have already been there and starting to see faults and problems in the map layout such as the desert being too small, not enough foliage in general, the map loops around too much, bit of a travel between location but yet feels like it could be a bit bigger at the same time, so much wasted potential with the sea and ocean travel, and so on, I think Los Santos and San Andreas map should be a bit bigger tbh and we need a better desert then just a small area in the middle of the map, so yeah If we ever go back to those locations, hope they be a lot better, bigger and more improved then such, so yeah

I'd love to see the Carroways in the game, Hampton and Long Island based area for Liberty City would be cool tbh, have few easter eggs like Jaws (area based on the location as well as props and such referencing the movies), The Great Gatsby (location and easter eggs based on the movie and novel) and so on, kinda a cool idea, also maybe include parts of Connecticut too maybe, also maybe some up north state of New York would be cool, up near Buffalo and near the border of Canada and other states, well maybe whenever we go back to Liberty or dlc that takes us there tbh, or maybe a North Yankton kinda situation tbh, so yeah

Been playing the game for the first time recently. Some of the dialogue does feel like it was written before any of this was cut, and didn't get changed when the content was cut. Certain NPCs will say someone is coming from upstate, etc. It makes me feel like certain missions used to take Niko across the state for various missions.

I really think the real reason why they decide to cut and downscale the map is because of all the space and time constraints, because the map would mostly be unfinished and the story would more likely be unfinished too, filling every areas with missions and activities is very important to implement in the game. If Staten Island were in GTA 4, it would've been called Richmond Hill Island or Ellis Island. Perfect names for a fictional borough.

Story wise GTA IV is the best GTA game. Content and Gameplay wise, GTA SA is the top. To some people GTA SA had the best story. I disagree the Los Santos part of GTA SA was definitely good, the San Fierro part was ok but felt incomplete, Las Ventures part was wierd, there were mostly random missions which did not fit with the theme of the game. GTA IV story was better structured, each mission felt relevant to Niko's story in the base game. The progression felt natural from each island to the next. The two DLCs also had a good story but some narrative choices made by Rockstar felt out of place when you compare them to the base game.

It's a common trend were the games feel rushed, especially further in. SA is the perfect example, great in the beginning then slowly worsening as the story progress. Now that they have endless income from shark cards, one would think they no longer have to rush and could release a detailed base map with a good story which over time expands with additional map details, new locations and a progressing story.

I agree with most of this, but I actually really liked the Las Venturas part of the game. Missions like Vertical Bird, Black Project, and Breaking The Bank At Caligula's are some of the all time best. For me the story dropped off when Sweet got out of prison, had a tantrum, and had you doing Grove Street business again, when really CJ had outgrown that. Thankfully that was right towards the end. Other than that the story was great, but IV 100 % has the best story in GTA games, with San Andreas a comfortable 2nd.

I have a theory that in order to explain why we can’t just go to other states in GTA games is that the story only takes place in that portion of the state or City. That makes sense as to why liberty city is an Island with no visible land masses far from the city. It’s like the land that connects to shoreside vale in gta 3 and LCS where the USA exits and we can’t reach it but since VC, VCS and SA have planes and helicopters that are meant to be accessible and usable R* removed the other parts outside if the story location. All the maps don’t make sense geographically. RDR1 and 2 have land outside of the playable area because there are no planes or helicopters like in gta. If computers and consoles had the power to host an entire country and R* had the man power they would absolutely use that and implement it but since they can’t they have to explain the gta games away as islands instead of whole states. Look at Chinatown wars for example, we know Alderney exists but we can’t access it and there aren’t any tunnels or bridges that take us to it, the game physically any hold Alderney but in the GTA universe it exists just like the caraways. Bullowrth is a town surrounded by green mountains and has no roads leading to it, none of the water leads to the ocean and there aren’t any airports but we know there’s a whole country outside the town but because we’re a teen who can’t drive cars planes or boats there isn’t any need to break the immersion and just make bullworth a small island like the GTA games. Las venturas shouldn’t be too far from los samtos, san fiero exists in the HD universe as it is mentioned in police scanner files and it should be an area up past Paleto Bay. I think it’s all a convenient illusion for the players during the story of each GTA game. If they made it possible (in terms of hardware limitations) to connect each island/state and their cities it should be through the use of borders. If you get close to a bordering state then you will be threatened by the states army base with fighter jets forcing you to hop on a plane or bus amd going through a loading screen to load up that island.

Great video as always A countryside in game could have make some variety and make the city big. In gta 5 online my character lives in blaine county(Paleto Bay and sometimes in Grapeseed), i love LS, my favorite city in all gta(played gta since SA), but i also liked blaine County while playing Trevor, and the devs give some good opportunities in business there in the game. So in GTA 4 it could have been great, but in other way they could have chosen Alderney for Bellics to hide since its not really considered LC, Bohan was near one of Dimitri bases.

I always thought that it's weird how we only have this one city floating in the ocean. I would've made them create a whole piece of land where at some point, you just can't go any further as you're leaving the map. In that, I would've had them put in this Carraways region and a bit more on the Alderny side with just a wide forest region surrounding the sub urban areas and the ocean on the side where it's supposed to be. I would also have them make Bohan bigger to really look like the Bronx. I don't understand this whole "There's not enough time" argument, like bro.. nobody is rushing ya'll and if you say quality over quantity, then don't rush the project. All that extra stuff may have been finished in like 8 months. You already had the concepts and all that, just add some more, perfect it and finish it to give it to the guys doing the world building and give them all the time they need and maybe in 8 months, it would've been done. Liberty City and Alderny obviously gets the most attention and time, but those sub urban areas don't need that much effort. They're supposed to be simple calm areas and not a detailed concrete jungle.

I think it fit the atmosphere perfectly to have LC be an island. It adds to the feeling that you cant escape no matter how hard you try. You cant buy a plane ticket to San Andreas or drive to vice city. The city itself is such a dark and oppressive force that doesn’t allow you to leave. That’s how New York feels in real life for many people. Unless you’re rich, the city is all you have, and you’ll never have the money or resources to leave. Liberty city being nothing but an endless, suffocating cityscape captures this feeling perfectly. There is no peaceful suburb. There’s no sunny beach. No picturesque mountainsides. No paradise just past Alderney…Just inescapable concrete, and beyond that…. Nothing. Just ocean

Honestly, back in the days after GTA San Andreas many players that I knew, including my friends, expected to see a huge upgrade in everything in GTA 4. Like, we expected to see more options and more stuff to do, like more mini games, more possibilities, even bigger map, bigger vehicle tuning and stuff like that. But when the game came out we are all were disappointed very much. Some of my friends even called GTA 4 as the worst game in the series, because he didn't liked the fact that it doesn't have those many aspects that made GTA San Andreas a better game. And if that was not enough, PC version of the game had a bad port. Like, despite the fact that system requirements matched for the game, you couldn't play the game even on lowest settings. I personally had to play the game with 5 - 15 FPS and I had to deal with the fact that we had so much bad PC port. So yeah, seen that Rockstar even cut out a huge chunk of the map makes the situation even more sad than it already was. Because they were talking about quality but in the end released unfinished, broken and cut game.

As interesting as it would have been, what practical purpose would The Carraways have anyhow? Be it a suburban are, or a "hotel resort", or even an empty plot of land, I don't think there'd be much to do there, since there already isn't much to do in GTA4 outside of missions. Yes, they could have made a mission-giver reside there, or have a mission take place there, but given how small and empty the area, it would have unlikely made for an interesting mission location, and would just waste the player's time driving to and from. I mean, look at San Andreas? It's got a ton of "countryside" (I'm talking about both the actual countryside and the desert), but there's very little to do there, just a handful of missions (granted, the desert does have some landmarks to sight-see), and most of it is really disconnected from the main plot anyway. So really, besides providing some immersion, it's kinda pointless. Edit: Also, after Dmitri sets Roman's apartment on fire, Roman and Nico technically flea to another state. The second safehouse is located in the in-universe equivalent of New Jersey.

it seems like you don't enjoy the countryside atmosphere yourself and i get that. However for most people, even if there wouldn't be a lot to do there, it's still adds diversity to the gameplay and offers and escape from the city clamour if you will, which I would personally love and I do love in GTA SA and GTA 5

The real shame is the amount of work they actually put into the beta, maps and features that is almost finished, then removed and forgotten forever. Same thing in GTA 5, the beta map was supposed to have a lot more vegetation and details overall, but it had to be removed to optimize for current generation of consoles. Now 11 years later, with more modern hardware accessible, and several re-releases, none of that stuff has been added back. Even tho they could do that, with relatively small effort.

GTA 4 being just city is one of the big reasons I did not like it, coming from the joy and wonder of San Andreas with the three cities, country side, desert, and such a variety of environments sucked. The lack of an suburban area or rural area was a huge slap in the face, then combine that with the lack of customization, lack of things you could do, and the stripped down gameplay made a lot of people very unhappy with GTA 4. I could not wait for GTA 5 when it was announced because of how lacking GTA 4 was, still love GTA 5 now because while I am hoping GTA 6 is good there is still plenty of fun in GTA 5 like GTA SA. I actually had to go back to SA when 4 was out due to it just not being as fun and the only city thing got old fast.

tbh, this is why gta 4 was never very good to me. The map just sucked. It felt janky in controls even for its time, and graphically just muddy. Very unlikable character. Not really sure what people see in it, but suppose to each their own of course. I just prefer as much freedom as possible. The difference with red dead 1 and gta 4 was huge.

This game was good. But it's not my favourite in the series (far from it). The story was depressing and so was the environment. The controls were irritating. Also sa was also released during a happy time of my life. Sa was an improvement from VC, IMO there's no way four is better than SA or GTA five for that matter. Have a good one.
