It makes me sad that dutch translations for my favorite authors are very rare. Its just much more immersive to read it in my own language. Meanwhile the shelves are full with god damn Terry Goodkind and fantasy for kids.(I would love dutch malazan books)
@Samuel-s1e2 ай бұрын
Terry Goodkind? Oh yeah… at my local (large) bookshop (also in the Netherlands) half of the fantasy area is book tock romantacy, which is fine if it sells. Another quarter is delegated to mister Badkind, which kind of stings when you’re an avid fantasy reader. Another sixth is LotR and ASoIaF which I love, but I’ve already read them. The rest is leftovers. It sucks. Good news about Malazan. The very well made French translations were a success and many Eastern European translations are coming (with really cool illustrators), so a Dutch translation may be possible in the next decade.

Daniel, about the English phonetics in your book, I think that's a fantastic idea and you should stand your ground on that. What you said about the readers being ahead of Mikhael makes me think of some movies or shows where a character yells something in Russian, Spanish, swedish, etc trying to warn the protagonists but that protagonists don't understand and exacerbate things. but if you speak that language you are "ahead" of the protagonists and know something is gonna go wrong. I.e. the opening scene of John Carpenter's The Thing
@rosieplanetta86892 ай бұрын
I agree with atlasunderthesky! Additionally, I've seen this done well with some of the discworld books where you also see the main characters trying to learn the words the new guy from the golden empire is saying. As a result, you see the tourist character say the English word in the phonetics, then you see how the main characters mispronounce the word and slowly get closer to the proper phonetics. Adds both realism and humor 😊

So I’ve been reading through Stormlight for the first time to be ready for Wind and Truth, and I haven’t read any other Cosmere stuff. I’m halfway through Oathbringer right now, and honestly haven’t felt at all lost by not reading any of the other books/series. The only thing I can think of is maybe I don’t know the full context for what some of the interludes mean, but other than that, I’ve yet to hit anything that I blatantly notice as “hmm, I don’t know what that is and it’s probably in another book”. So for my money, I don’t think people NEED to read other things before starting Stormlight. They can if they want, but it’s not a necessity.

Gotta be honest, that short trend of a vocal minority complaining about black elves in ROP is pretty much dead and gone. Honest Tolkien fans who think ROP is a joke of a show dont have to be cautious anymore cause they dont want to be lumped in with racists/sexists and right wing culture war hawks. They are still out there but most honest people agree that it's just a bad show on almost every front, and Amazon is banking on internal fighting and name calling to shut down honest criticism. At this point, we shouldnt want a season 3.
@HeavyTopspin2 ай бұрын
Oh, that's the strategy now. Race-swap a character or change their sexuality, do press about how "inclusive" and "groundbreaking" it is, get the expected reaction from that vocal minority, and then claim that is the reason for any criticism of the show/movie regardless of what the criticism actually is. "The vast majority of people hate our poorly written-show? Must be because this character is Identity X. Look, we've got three mean tweets to prove it!"
@Crispifordthe3rd5152 ай бұрын
I really don't think it was a vocal minority. People keep saying that out of cope or to downplay it, but it was not a minority in the slightest. And although I hate to say it, I kinda agreed with them? Not because of the same reasons THEY complain about it (they're just racist and try to hide it) but just because it's one of many things ROP does that just craps all over the original source material. Had Tolkien wrote it that way originally I literally would have no issue, but because he had a very specific world in mind (with it being based are European folklore and Catholic inspirations), it is definitely a problem. Albeit, probably the smallest of them.
@HeavyTopspin2 ай бұрын
@@Crispifordthe3rd515 I think you had three groups. The smallest being actual racists, who of course were magnified and held out as "proof" by the show's defenders. The second believe like you do, that it simply didn't fit the lore (and many pointed out they could have introduced Easterling or Haradrim characters to fit the diversity). The third realize that they're following the Disney playbook: race-swap a character, wait for the inevitable complaints from group 1, and use that as "proof" that there's a "racist right-wing conspiracy" to bring your show down because you dared to support inclusivity.

Tolkien was very clear that he hated allegory. You say “anti-industrial’” allegory, others say it’s an allegory for the two World Wars. Tolkien would say neither. A story containing some themes does not make it allegorical. Other than that, totally agree. There's an extended portion of the story where the Gaelic-speaking aliens are conversing with English-speaking humans and all the English is written out in Scottish/Irish Gaelic phonetics. Basically what I mean is that maybe reading language that way might feel like a chore for some readers; Of course, as an artist I understand that making something easier to consume is not necessarily better from a creative standpoint and sometimes you just have to go with it, but it's also true that is the kind of thing may turn off some readers.
