Landowners had resources like strong houses with unbreakable doors, plenty of food stocks etc. Many of them left for safer places sensing something brewing (though none expected a genocide) .The rest were poor peasants and agricultural labourers who lived in huts. I know those parts intimately. Do some research. Diwan Bahadur C Gopalan Nair (Moplah Rebellion 1921) Sir Chettur Sankaran Nair (Gandhi and Anarchy) both of whom were eminent people who had studied the episode in depth immediately and Dr Annie Basant who did her own research all judged it as a one sided communal carnage and were severely critical of Gandhi on this count.

Dr. Sandeep, while providing the historical context to Khilafat and the support of Congress to it, has missed a historical progression of Congress' Policy towards Ms from the time of Mr B Tayyabaji, the impact of Bengals partition on the thought process of Congress leaders and Indian society, the role of Lucknow pact in parallasing congress to every demand of Mslms. All these trails eventually lead to the Path of Mr Gandhi who along with his own thought process lead it to some unexpected outcome. However, the literary evidence suggests that he was not in favour supporting the Khilafat and was of the opinion that if Mslms have to be convinced for any collaboration it should be on the terms of nationalist swaraj movement itself and not otherwise!

What an impossible character; and also one needs to give a serious thought to the theory that many Deshbhakt Indians, particularly those sufferers at the hands of Muslims during the post-partition days that doubt MKG's parentage that he was born while his official mother was in captivity in his Official Father's Muslim employer's household, the reason being that he was caught red-handed making some financial deal with a guy who owed money to the Moneyed Muslim in whose office the official father of MKG was the Chief Accountant! The man knew that since he has been caught on the vile act he can't escape death and he left Porbandar in a great hurry. And the Muslim owner, as was the norm those days. got hold of MKG's mother and others of the family and kept them in his household as unpaid slaves. And MKG was born in that period of captivity, which was of quite a long period with no trace of his official father anywhere in the vicinity. And many attribute this background to MKG's unusually extreme soft corner toward that particular community!
