I made a high lift door out of a standard one once turned the curved tracks around so the curves were at the top.... had to make bigger springs longer cables and change drums but it was a pretty good custom job considering i was doing doors for only 2 years

My new building has about 20' of ceiling height at the highest point, but it slopes at 1:12 pitch down away from the door. My door height is 14'. I am a home owner and want to order the doors myself and DIY install. Naturally I want to maximize the high lift. My biggest challenge is knowing how the door company measure the headroom for high lift. I know they need to adjust for the track hangers.

You need longer cables if I am hearing you correctly. What you do is look at the drums and get the model # and manufacturer. With that you can easily find the cable length formula online. The formula is specific to the mfr/model so you need those numbers. The formula looks something like..."door height+66" minus lift"

136+133 is 269" 269 - 31.5 = 237.5" of cable. Sounds like a lot of cable for this door unless you are using a pretty large diameter drum. There will be a lot of extra cable on the drum because you are only using one quarter of the lift the drum is capable of.

First I want to say that I find your video's both informative and quite funny.. That said, I have a strange problem that I hope you can help with. I have a shop behind my house that is a 45'wide X 28' deep. The guy who built it used it for car storage only.. Though you would never believe that was the case by the lousy design of the building. My blood pressure skyrockets every time I think about his crappy design. Anyway, I am planning to park in one side and work in the other on cars. It was wide open inside, but I have built a wall sort of down the center. Since he used trusses with the bottom being flat at 8'8", I have to do a lot of redesigning of 5 of the trusses. That will give me room to install a lift and be able to put an average sized car all the way up. But just as the issue with the guy in the last video, I would have to have the door down to raise a car. That also means I cannot put a car up and put anything under it as the door would not open very far. So I want to change the angle of the door to match the pitch of the roof. I think that would mean the full weight of the door, or damn close to it, would be on the springs at all times. ~~ The next issue is filling the opening from a 16 x 8 door to a 12 x 8 door. That isn't a big problem. But I do want to go to an insulated door AND put it on some type of door opener. So I am looking for your expert advice. ~~~ Can a 16' door be cut down to 12' ? I cannot see the edge very well, but as far as I can see the end caps are only held on with some type of seam sealer.. Is that correct? If so, I can cut it down and insulate it. That would save me a ton of money.. I think you for any and all advice and please do make some more video's. I laughed my ass off when I saw the two beer bottles come up in the shot showing the raising difference in drums.. lol... Oh yeah, the roof is 5/12" pitch...

Vertical lift doors blow my mind, there's no way I could have one. I mean... I understand theyre safe and all... but no. just... something about gravity dsnt add up right there... Id rather have a rolling up door
