A steam car like a Doble would be the only practical nuclear conversion if you had a 1MW RTG. With 20% thermal efficiency, you'd get about 265hp. Such RTGs weren't made as far as I know, but there is an isotope that could work Po210 (140 kilowatts/kilogram energy density). NIMBYism would keep them off the road, even though they couldn't explode. If built, such a car could go for several months without refueling. The other issue is that RTGs don't have an "off", so there'd be a lot of waste heat.

How can you tell by the audio? Should it sound smoother?
@QuantumLeap835 жыл бұрын
@@roam3r690 you can tell timing is off by the intermittent flames coming out of the carb - this backfiring occurs when the intake valve is still partially open on a combustion stroke. As to running on less than 8, yes is should sound smoother. This thing has open headers, so the exhaust tone should have a "balanced" sound for lack of a better word, since exhaust from every cylinder has equal access to the environment. Instead you can notice that it has the sound of a car that has an exhaust leak, or a two or maybe three cylinder engine running at low rpm (when this one is running at high rpm. Combine that with the overall lack of power and lack of willingness to rev. The ZIL engines are big but low on HP but make decent torque. I would expect it to make about 150 HP but would expect it to make maybe 300 or so lb/ft when running correctly. And when all cylinders are getting fuel, air and spark at the correct time with good compression it should be willing to rev in a more "snappy" manner. They must have done a slight tune and service to get the timing right as on disassembly timing would have been knocked out and down they would have all of the vacuum lines sorted and everything “calibrated”, because of how well it ran.

Unlikely. That is soviet made truck engine - it probably isn't in very good condition, but it also has been built to low standards - heavy and unbalanced moving parts, heads that are not particularly well breathing and so on. It was made to move around truck with some 9 tons or so weight, so it has the size and torque, but it also has small carb, ignition setup suited for low rev operation and correspondingly low power output.
@mshathlonxp5 жыл бұрын
@GM Kof hard of course I don't know - how could I, living in a latvia, exUSSR country, know anything about soviet made crap - right? :) Wrong - westerners could have better impression about soviet made things just because they got export versions, while we mostly got domestic stuff - if you don't know, export cars, tractors etc, were built to noticeably higher standards than domestic items - parts used to assemble them went through second, better, quality check, assembly lines ran slower, with best workers and more inspectors, quite often some separate parts were imported, like carbs and so - so even with this higher quality, british importer of ladas, cars of highest quality available to ordinary soviet people, was taking apart them, painting, fitting new interiors etc, and sold them as a no frills car - while over here in domestic quality it was positioned as "little lux". Since we have replaced our soviet made crap with mostly german made stuff, I can assure you - germans back then made cars which, although a bit more demanding in repairs, was WAY superior in everything. Because of that, and availability of cheap second hand cars etc, the only leftovers from that time still visible, are mostly soviet made tractors, although mostly smaller ones, as bigger ones consume disproportional amount of fuel, compared to similarly sized western ones, and the trouble of keeping one on road is mostly afforded by small lot farmers.

you should build a sketchy exhaust system with some universal resonator and a home-made cross pipe: the project is beyond awesome as always, but i would like to hear that massive engine! Maybe you could make it pop out from the side of the car! or a massive pipe from the back

The coolest Lada.. to date. A Lada Boat would be nice with a low revving diesel

Hmm.. I can either go back to work or I can click on this thumbnail informing me that Russians put a 7,000,000 cm³ truck engine into a 1981 Lada. Hmmmm..... what should I do?
@Snubbs5 жыл бұрын
7 litres is 7000CC. 7,000,000CC is getting into serious marine diesel territory, at which point you don't put the engine into the car, you put the car into the engine.

This engine does not need a turbo. A proper tuner who can finde and disable the timing issue should last. Than it would burn tires like hell.

great vid as usual, just a suggestion, the engine really needs a better carb, twin down draft at least or the equivalent of a holly four down draft and a re-tune. you will get the revs you want and then some.
@asjmpickle5 жыл бұрын
high ram four barrel would make it twice the power no doubt. and fix timing
@004JV5 жыл бұрын
No need for any other carb, will do fine. Fuel delivery is more than enough. The way intake manifold is designed requires a lower cfm carb. People tested four barrel carbs in actual trucks and engine loses low rpm torque completely then. By owning the actual truck and looking at the way this engine behaves. I would take a look at carb accelerator pump. Engine is not definately getting enough gas and is therefore on low power. Gear shifting problems are due to first gears being unsyncronized. But with the torque and low weight car they probably could drive on higher gears only. Since there isn’t a good look of the engine I’m not sure did they remove external rpm limiter from engine. Engine is limited to 3000rpm in truck. For sure you can push it’s limits in car use.

I hope they do as you have said, they should have a beast at the end, look forward to seeing that.
