Hi guys! Like I said in the video you might have seen this tutorial already, but I hope to hear your opinions which one you like more so I can make better videos in the future. This is a shorter version and I think it doesn’t really miss anything that was in the longer version (except the hinges but there’s tutorial for that). Edit: the old video can still be found here kzbin.info/www/bejne/oHjSm2CuotR5bpo (I unlisted it to avoid any confusion)

I loved this video because even though there are some problems in the gauntlet (lack of compound curves except for the thumb and awkward knuckle ( the large knuckle plate is too big shouldn't overlap completely the smaller one at least in closed hand position) Now, the things that I love is how you explain the methods to make creases and increase the over all mobility, this was some truly precious advice that will help me a lot in my own creations; what I got from this video is some very valuable knowledge I had problems getting ^^
@GarageKnight
@GarageKnight 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for a very thorough feedback! Yes the knuckle is a bit large, the reason is that I experienced the limits in movement and I also wanted to make it in a way that you can fully open and close your hand. And when the hand is fully closed (fist) you have a flat surface in it so you could hit with it. It really opened my eyes about have far the movement can go. But I got some ideas how I will refine the design sometime in the future!

These look really good. Although I already got some kind of armored gauntlets for my costume, I might still try to make yours, as right now I am interested in historical precision (it is for a Mandalorian costume, which I try to push heavily towards full plate armour). It is really good that you showed particularly the holes in such detail, also how to work the knuckle plate. Love this tutorial.
@GarageKnight

Thank you very much! Yeah the holes are something I learned when I studied different types of gauntlets. Although all I have is images and videos that I've searched online, I've never seen gauntlets irl except the ones I've made. I'm continuing my studies on armor mobility and I have one project going on where I have some new progress on it. Hope to finish it soon! Thank you for your feedback!

Hope I'm not sounding dumb, when it comes to those obvious bolts that jut out at the final chapter, he does actually round those out with a hammer right?
@GarageKnight
@GarageKnight 2 жыл бұрын
No dumb questions here, feel free to ask anything. Do you mean the rivets? They are already round at the other end (outside) and I just cut them to right length and the hammer the other end.
@rallymaster5509
@rallymaster5509 2 жыл бұрын
@@GarageKnight At around 10:16 more or less. Were those the rivets you cut those down? (The ones that appear to be on the outside). I'm making my first set, that's all.
@GarageKnight
@GarageKnight 2 жыл бұрын
@@rallymaster5509 Those at 10:16 are just nuts and bolts, I always use them as a temporary solution to attach the pieces since they are easy to remove. When I'm ready to assemble the whole thing, I'll remove the nuts and bolts and replace them with rivets (those are a bit harder to remove...). Riveting is what you see in 10:30. I just realized that I didn't show the actual riveting here very well, sorry for that. You can see me doing some riveting in my viking shield video at 8:44. There are of course short tutorial videos of riveting in youtube. I think I might do a short tutorial about riveting myself at some point.

@loicklein101 3 жыл бұрын
@@GarageKnightyeah finger pieces , for the other I managed to count them (I think)
@GarageKnight
@GarageKnight 3 жыл бұрын
sorry this is a long one: the distance between the holes in the leather is 1cm. Meaning there's one plate every centimeter. Measure your fingers and you get an estimate how many plates you need (the first hole is above the nail, the last just below the knuckle, but since you attach these to a glove the distance might be a bit longer). Now don't attach all the pieces right now. I actually made the leathers a bit longer than needed and I also made few extra pieces. Then I made the piece shown in 6:05. Now you place that piece over your knuckles and put the leather piece with the finger plates on your finger. Now you can check if you need to add more finger pieces. Then cut the extra leather out. That's how I did it, hope this helps. Just ask if you need further instructions. And btw the amount of handplates you need to cut is 3.

@@GarageKnight like 1 cm length? Because i can already buy them at 1cm length
@GarageKnight
@GarageKnight 3 ай бұрын
@@DCZIAKFR There are few things you need to consider when selecting the length of the rivet. I used two methods: "tight rivets" and "sliding rivets". Tight rivets are simple since you only attach two metal things tightly together. You can see more details in this video kzbin.info/www/bejne/sGWXiH2fd9Wpl6M at 01:47. As you can see you need about 2-3 mm extra length when you hammer the other end. In my gauntlets, I riveted the brass parts on the vambrace tightly since they don't have to move. Sliding rivets (actually term when speaking about armors) are a bit loose so the plates can move as shown at 09:30. The length of the rivets depends on how tightly you have build your parts and how easily they fit together without space in between them. Some medieval masters built them so well that you couldn't even fit a paper in between the plates and they still moved really well... But I couldn't achieve that lol. So to answer your question: I just measured my gauntlets and the finished sliding rivets are about 6-8 mm, so they might have been about 1 cm before I hammered them. But remember that I used 1,25 mm steel so if you use 2 mm steel then 1 cm rivet might be too short. But like I said, it really depends on how tightly your pieces fit together and how much movement you want. If you can, make a test with the 1 cm rivets before purchacing more, but you can quite easily cut longer rivets with a hacksaw as shown in the video I mentioned above. Sorry that I can't give a straigth answer, but I hope this helps. If you want to check the longer version of the video, you can see it here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/oHjSm2CuotR5bpo
