People don't appreciate the Sanitation workers enough. The Trash men and janitors and house cleaning etc. It's a very important job and it takes a strong person to deal with that. Without them trash and nasty bodily fluids and unclean areas would overrun us and 80% of people look down on them but honestly they are better stronger more humble people.

My ex cleaned the booze cruise ships on Helsinki-Stockholm route; you need a strong stomach, be quite fit (because the turnaround time is fast and the ships are big) and nothing should faze you mentally (like finding dildos, people having sex, worryingly large amounts of blood, semen or mystery substances, dead bodies, you name it). They made nice money, but it wasnt for everyone. What god-awful messes people leave behind, its insane! Ive even made the beds and checked I hung up the towels before checking out.. while some other person felt necessary to crap between the sheets, lie in it and make shit angels, hurl on the pillow and smear it on the walls and carpets.. Choices we make 😮

I worked as a garbage man for 3 years, but i cant pick out the worst smell. Over time, you get used to it. What dtuck with me was a time a guy put a big rubbermaid bin out for us to take. It was full of water with a 6 foot long snake just rotting inside. I left it behind and the guy chased me up the street telling me it was my job to take it... but i would not put in on my truck... worst thing ive ever seen...

Back in the early 80's, and yes I can still smell it, someone had thrown a half eaten chicken out but had placed it in a massive glass jar. We dared each of us to open it and smell it and dumbo me did. That smell still sits in my memory to this day.

I've worked in paving construction for a couple decades. The "tar" in the asphalt has a very strong smell and that stuff shows up on sight at about 200 degrees. It didn't take long for me to get used to the smell, but people smell it on me after work. Working out in the public, people obviously notice the smell. For some reason, the Asian folks seem to have the strongest reaction to the smell. They almost always hold their noses as they walk by. Yeah, trash is stinky too...

I'm a former equipment operator at a landfill the worse we had was there was a packing plant in town and they would bring out the spinal cords in a open top trailer once a week WOW was that stuff nasty we would get on the radio and say the soup trailer is coming in whenever we seen it coming in

I got to know my local garbage man a bit and I was outside one day when he pulled in to pick up the garbage and he jumps out of the truck and says….dude check out what somebody threw away today as he pulls a ruger 10/22 rifle out of the cab. It looked to be decent shape and I looked it over well enough to go grab a few shells and we loaded it up and it shot perfect. He said he had found another rifle a few years back. Who would throw a gun in the garbage can? This is very rural Minnesota where I’m at.

So I've had a lifelong struggle with addiction and I finally feel like I got a hold on it but I know the just unlimited darkness and hopelessness that it brings to the human condition. I used to do repair work for WM..we had a customer at a meat packing plant. Hundreds of gallons of blood in every Dump. Summertime and 2 days of being broken down before we were called. The smell still haunts me

I lived in a high rise before and the trash chute room always smelled particularly horrid when people would throw away old shrimp or old meat. The dumpsters were emptied everyday but every once in a while there would be a day where it was just unbearable.

As an ex-garbageman, I think one of the worst smells is when you're in the building you powerwash garbage trucks in, there is one large pit, but the rest of the building just has a small trench that doesn't completely clean itself out, so stuff decomposes overnight, and it hits you first thing in the morning getting the truck ready. That'll make you nauseous. The pet boarding house with bags of feces was up there, too. Would just smear itself all over the packer. As a farmer, I'd rather smell pig shit anyday :D

When I was younger I used to ride on the back of a trash truck. Maggots in standing water on a hot summer day is one of the most putrid things I’ve ever smelled, along with a bunch of baby diapers that have been sitting in the can all week in the heat. I used to be a garbage man, and you do get used to just general trash smell. However, I used to dump the dumpster at the sanitation station (which was raw sewage), and that was the second worst smell for me. The first was this trashy dude who had goats and cattle, which he didn’t take care of very well. Occasionally I would dump his dumpster and there would be a dead livestock animal in it… THAT was the worst smell I’ve ever encountered as a garbage man.

i've worked a few different types of sanitation jobs and the worst smell IMHO is human shit. but he's right. cat urine/litter is a runner up along with diapers, tampons, and vomit. in no particular order. i'm in hotel housekeeping now and the second i found out nobody really smears fluids on the walls or craps in the trash cans i knew i was going to be fine.

I own a small fast food /sea food restaurant and in the summer we used to clean squid stomachs, that shlt will become the nastiest vilest stink, there is no way you can toss them into regular trash, we used to keep them in hermetically closed plastic containers and I would drop them in nature once per week, they were 100% biodegradable and safe to dump out but it had to be away from civilization. The stecnh could knock the man out.

Had a blind date years ago that smelt like cat pee, She also was so heavy my car leaned to the right. Got stuck on a speed bump getting out of her building. Told her to get out of the car so I can clear the speed bump. There was no second date. My car stunk for weeks after that blind date. Think I dropped her off with my buddy that set use up on the blind date. He drove a 4x4 Jeep Cherokee. My lowered 1991 Honda Civic couldn't hold this girl.
