As someone who inherited a yard with shrubs I would not have picked myself, this whole philosophy of exposing the trunks has saved me from ripping out some mature shrubs that provide privacy and structure. While I may not care much for the foliage the shrubs provide, I am thoroughly now able to enjoy their architecture. Thank you Linda.

I’ve really enjoyed pruning shrubs into trees for sometime now. I was delighted to see you do it as well! Here in the Pacific Northwest gardeners love to prune up their older rhododendrons into trees and, my gosh are they striking, especially when in bloom. I’ve also used this method with a very large Pieris Japonica, a camellia and a waxleaf privet. Love the sculptural look that it gives the garden! I am a great fan of topiaries too! Thank you for your videos, they are really enjoyable!

Unbelievable how much better that looks !!! Love it. More in scale with the new nandinas & the whole composition with the window box will be balanced-I am certain of THAT - when you get that finished. I appreciate your most patient approach to this modification- I tend to rush through- been watching you for almost a year. Really ! You’ve taught me to slow down a bit. I only have privet that I do that to- that is mature enough, on the back fence of my 1st acre. There is an 8 ‘ wide gate leading to the back acre. I know people despise privet - But I am in love with the scent & the screening & the homes it creates for wildlife.

I loved this video , that you had stewart right in there with you in the shrub with a great inside view, talking and explaining things while pruning your shrub . Yesterday i pruned and shaped my small plum tree (volunteer tree from neighbors) into a topiary form and it does feel so great to get into that zone! I used to paint acrylic, and oil, not that great, but i do love art, and i feel like pruning feels like art to me, and so satisfying to trim how you want it to develope. Gardening and pruning feels like a form of art to me, placement, shaping, colors. Just this past year i realize it is a form of art to me, placing plant textures and colors complimenting each other , highlighting or accenting colors and shapes and sizes. Love the feeling! It takes me away, like some form of therapy. And last week i learned about how trees and plants can communicate and connect to each other and i watched so much online about it , i am so blown away that i had to let my husband and sons watch and learn about it too. I have a much greater appreciation of my plants and nature now. Love your videos and im a dedicated daily watcher and subscriber! Please let us know when the date of the QVC show will air so i can order!

I have a very small garden behind my garage with a pathway running through it. Last year I bought a pieris with every intention of pruning it up once it gets large enough. Because of the confined space I wouldn’t necessarily be able to have a large bushy shrub, but by pruning it up I can have the height and add smaller plantings underneath. I am also planning on doing this with viburnums and have done this with lilacs and privets as well.

I just pruned up a massive 12ft leylandii in this way. I was debating whether to take it out completely. But after catching a glimpse of your beautifully “pleached” mature conifer, I was inspired to give it a go. To say I’m pleased with how it turned out is an understatement! I took all the lower growth off right up to the top of my 6ft fence. It’s opened up so much planting space and has given me a few more hours of morning sunlight into the flower bed opposite it. Thank you for inspiring me to think outside the box Linda, you’re truly heaven sent!! ❤️ xxx

Thanks for that guidance, Stuart! When Linda cut that branch back I said to myself, “get rid of it!” The rejuvenation pruning tip is a good one but it’s important to research whether the plant will tolerate it, and when is the best time to do it. Not all shrubs will flush back when cut back so severely. Happy Mothers’ Day!

Gotta love a garden epiphany! That feeling that the plant is talking to you 😊 I seem to do more work on exposing trunks of trees (star magnolia, redbud, dogwoods) than I do on shrubs. For the first time, this year I’ve been doing rejuvenation prunes on sand cherry, rose of Sharon & Hypericum (inspired by videos like this) I’ve learned cutting is a good thing. We are just going into winter here in New Zealand and I jumped the gun with one of my Rose of Sharon, and gave it a good haircut last week. I've got three more to go but will wait until ALL the leaves have fallen. The one I did has now got a great tree shape to it rather than a thick mass of twisted and sometimes spindly branches down to ground level. I've saved the cuttings and will use them to try and make some teepees for my climbers in summer. I love your videos Linda.

I limb up shrubs on a regular basis and maintain that look. I've done it with lilacs, laurels and more, and it lightens the area below to allow for additional plantings and more air circulation to keep the plants healthy. Love the look as it does, as you say, often give a more tropical feel to the space! And I, too, agree that just rearranging items on my kitchen counter is uplifting, as is re-arranging furniture! I do it periodically and love the 'new look' and feel of my home.

We limbed up our yew hedge. We had a long, rather boxy and boring yew hedge across the front of the house on the north side. I dreamed of floral bushes like hydrangeas because the area is very shaded and needs some color. I watched one of your episodes where you talked about limbing up and the next day went out and tackled that hedge. It looks fabulous! It now has a bonzai appearance and the trunks of the four, equally spaced plants add architectural interest. They look amazing. I love the yews now and so glad we didn't tear them out. We are underplanting with Japanese ferns, dwarf hydrangea, hosta, coleus, etc. If I could post a picture I would.

Greetings from Vancouver Island, BC, Canada. Discovered your channel a couple of weeks ago and love the content. Last year I trimmed back an overgrown Japanese Rose that was over taking an area of my garden. I love the plant, but it loves to travel. My plants underneath appreciated it and thrived last year. Will be doing the same this year. I have one small blue spruce that I moved last year, it wasn't doing very well where it was. I was going to pull it out, but I have had this spruce for many years, so I think I will trim back the damage and see how it does this year. This morning I watched Must Grow Flowing Shrubs and while doing my weekly grocery shopping decided to stop by my local nursery and bought a Proven Winners My Monet Weigela.

I love pruning my shrubs and have done many. I intend to do several more like my snowball viburnum, I love yours. I have also done several tea olives and a camellia. My zone is 8A in Georgia.

I do this to all of my small trees and shrubs because I need to get rid of some shade. It also allows for me to plant stuff underneath. I’m in NJ and my goal always always always is to have something blooming for as much of the year as I can. I start w snowdrops in January and end w sedum and mums in November. I love your channel and am so glad I came across it!
