In your garden walk thru with Roy he made a great statement. He said sometimes you just have to tell certain areas “sorry guys. I’m just not getting to you this season.” That was a lightbulb moment for me. Really helpful.

What a breath of fresh air to hear inspirational gardeners such as you describe the difficulties in keeping things going. I think we all need to figure out how to “do” less with garden tasks. Last year I was watching another of my favorite KZbinrs who was growing tired of working in the heat and she started to say, “this is the point where I have to just (and I thought she was going to say, “get out there and get it done.”) Instead she said, “just let some of this die.” 😂😂😂 I think of that phrase often❤️

I garden on a much smaller scale and I feel overwhelmed too. It's that feeling of "never-ending" when all I really want to do is reach the finish line. And I don't mean stop gardening finish line, I just mean no new beds, no new plants (unless something needs replaced) and getting to a point where maintenance and care-taking is all I really need to do. I want to get to know each and every plant and give it what it needs. I don't want to be an expert on every plant, just the ones in my garden. I just turned 60 and I've come to realize the more you create, the more you have to maintain. Low maintenance is my buzz word these days, along with deer resistant and zone hardy 4-8 minimum....since I'm zone 6 and some plants didn't survive this very cold December. I have broken my gardens into 6 different areas (zones) and I only work on one at a time. That has taken a lot of pressure off me....just focusing on what I'm doing and not all the rest that still needs to be done. Hope you get it sorted out and show yourself some grace. Gardening should be fun....but it certainly can be back-breaking work too.

So refreshing that you share your real feelings about how overwhelming gardening can become. Some KZbinrs make it look so easy to manage huge gardens which is a disservice to us out here who are looking for support and advice. I love that you are leaving the need for perfection behind!! Yay! Based on your recommendation for solar lights and edging tool I ordered and am excited waiting for delivery. Thank you!❤

I think I figured out why everyone seems to be burnt out by working in their gardens. During COVID, no one could really get together and enjoy life as normal, because normal had significantly changed. There were no weddings, no parties, no graduations, no trips to the beach, or anything much to do. Staying home was the name of the game, and working in the garden became a respite for many. There were no other distractions. Now that things are starting to go back to pre-Covid times, we find ourselves torn with multiple choices and priorities. Compared to other activities, the garden is on the list, but often gets delayed for other fun gatherings. We've been isolated for so long, it's hard to pass up getting together with friends and family. The garden will always be there, but family and friends are first.

We are on the same page. With age comes wisdom and knowing your limitations. I've been working very hard in my garden the last few years trying to make it more maintenance free by planting more trees, shrubs and groundcovers. I can see the light at the end of the tunnel to a more maintenance free garden where I can putter and not "work" so hard.

Thank you so much for your videos, Erin. We don’t care about the weeds. Just show us the pretty things in your garden over and over. A moment on a video repeated doesn’t seem repetitious. We go outside to look at these things in our yards as often as we can. So we like to see them and hear your talk about them as often as you have a mind to do it. I know this is time consuming though. I wish you had more help. We all do don’t we. Please thank Mr. Much More Patient for his role in bringing all of this to us. We are grateful for all of his help. Thankfully we’ve had rain in Tennessee to get a break from the watering for a minute. ❤

I feel you Erin! So overwhelmed here in NB, Canada . Trying to build a greenhouse(with my 78 yr old father),helping daughter out (with her 3 yr old eldest ) who just had a new baby which lives 4hrs away(not to mention driving back and forth due to false labor episodes🤦‍♀️). And soooo much rain. My gardens have been on back burner and are definitely showing it. Weeds, insect pressure… Finally the GH is up and about ready to plant in although still a few touches to finish on it. Daughter is finally settled with the new family and I feel I can breath again and am yearning to get back to my garden and serenity. I never expected building a greenhouse would have been so much work. But I will appreciate my time with my dad and cherish it forever!

i have a huge garden, consisting mostly of very deep mixed borders. My beds are mostly perennials, with about 460 dahlias tucked into the 4,000 sq. ft. I plant up 20 huge pots of annuals and have a few large raised bed for succession planted vegetables, as well. It's....a lot. For the first time, I've hired a very skilled and hardworking nursery employee to come and weed, edge, and dead head two days per month and let me tell you, it has made ALL the difference in how much I can enjoy my garden. I still have plenty to do, but now I have the time to make about ten bouquets a week and fiddle with roses, tie climbing vines, and just enjoy it. Think about it, Erin!

Overwhelm affects us all. I wouldn't blame age, though. I'm seventy and still doing all my own gardening and even some hardscaping. It doesn't have to slow you down. We moved and I started a brand new garden five years ago and sheet mulching was an integral part of making it happen.

My husband and I have been working like crazy the last few years making our 5 acre property in Ellenburg NY beautiful with gardens and fruit trees and vegetable/ berry gardens. July 2nd torrential rains flooded our property and destroyed a big chunk of it. I am devastated and feel overwhelmed with starting over but am trying to stay optimistic. Luckily our house was untouched and just minor flooding in our garage. Many friends and family has reached out to offer help and a local garden center has offered to give us perennials to replace what I lost. So thankful for such kindness ❤

Erin you are such a joy to follow! I found you a few years ago on your Wine & Weeds videos. Never disappointed with your topics and projects! I too have new banana trees. My neighbor has shared the new shoots with me. I have one in my front yard and two in the backyard in an area we have named “The Nature Walk”, a path in the woods for our grandkids. Thought it would be cool for them to walk under their long lush leaves! Incidentally, she harvests the leaves in the fall before the frost takes them. She rolls them up and freezes them to use for her tamales.

I am one of the geranium “Rozanne” lovers. It covers the ground quickly and suppresses weeds, blooms continuously from spring through fall, has the most beautiful lustrous bloom color and also will grow back quickly from the clump if you prune it or give it space. It is a prolific grower, however, and will overtake other plants aggressively (like a vine on the ground) if you don’t prune occasionally. Like all others watching, I love Erin’s channel and content!

I totally get what you’re saying about large projects. When we first moved into this house I cut down a 20’ x 100’ row of overgrown privet with nothing but a machete. Those type projects are out of the question now. Thankfully we are in a better position financially so we can hire it out. There is something to be said about ‘good enough’. Not perfect, maybe not even the ‘right way’ but the right way for us and that’s a good place to be.

I love watching Fargo and we end up sounding like we were in the movie for days after, and I’m a southern girl. “You have no call to get snippy with me” (Chris) is a common phrase around here.

we used to live near Hidden Gardens and I loved walking there when my kids were babies/toddlers, because it was very stroller-friendly, but still had TONS of off-sidewalk trails through woods and streams for them to stretch their legs. HIGHLY recommend! And yes, it's an extension facility of MSU.

Love these q and a videos! Thank you for your comments about hardy geranium. I love them! And they never perform as well as I want them to. I’m glad to know I’m not alone.

Hey, Erin, you just keep being you! I think I probably speak for most of us in your community when I say that. We all keep tuning in to listen to you because of what you bring to us as a "real" gardener. Doesn't matter worth a hill of beans what kind of accent you have. Personally speaking, I love that there are so many different accents in the world...makes life so much more interesting. And, yes, so many of us can empathize with you about the really slow start to our gardens this year. My daffodils usually emerge right after the crocuses, with tulips and hyacinth coming next. This year my daffs came up LAST. And the foliage from all of my bulbs seemed to hang on forever, making it difficult to plant new things in their place. So, yeh, I'm right there with you...feeling a little overwhelmed. Just have to keep on keeping on! (Does that last remark show my age?) 😂 💚😊💚

Erin, you inspire me with your knowledge and creativity! It's good to know I'm not alone in feel the garden overwhelm! I loved the video with Roy and especially his comment about using the good ole garden hoe to cut down on weeds. I bought a stirrup hoe for my new beds and it is my new best friend! Thank you a million times over from Grand Rapids, Michigan!
