I realize this is a long time after you aired this. I read many of the comments below and didn't see a method that I have used in the past for this kind of thing(tho not as much with watering plants). If you have a lawn tractor(which you do) and a trailer sturdy enough to hold a 50 gal drum(plastic) full of water you can make a water tank with a faucet at the bottom to fit a regular hose that can be turned on and off at will. I make up the entire barrel with the fertilizer solution and then water directly from the hose to the plant. Not doing the water can at all. The fertilizer I used(water soluble) is a solution, not a suspension, so it dissolved in the water and doesn't separate out. A suspension won't work in this set up. Not sure this helps. A very easy set up and not very expensive. I do love your videos. I just discovered them and I've learned a ton from them. Thanks for that. Hope you find what will work for you.

Jackie Dioszegi Depends on the type of fertilizer. If it's the dry kind, it'll store forever as long as you keep it dry, sealed and out of the way of any wet or damp areas. The liquid kinds I've heard can demulsify as time passes and maybe lose its potency but I've never had this happen since I use it up pretty quick. As for heat, I'm not 100% but I'd keep both stuff in a shaded storage, better safe than sorry.

So, many years ago I worked for our town watering and caring for all the plants, of course we were on a larger scale than your gardens ( but small town so maybe not lol) and so we watered out of a huge tank in a big truck once a week we would add water soluble fertilizer to that tank and water as normal, we had a water pump with a cam lock garden hose attachment. You/Aaron could likely set up some kind of smaller water tank on a trailer with a one inch water pump to haul along behind the garden tractor and you could pre mix much more than your watering can! Happy watering! :)

When I was a child, we lived in the woods (very remote) and the Forest Service used to have water cans that were worn like backpacks and were very powerful. I can’t imagine carrying that tank, but I bet it could be put on wheels and used for fertilizing plants.

For first time this year, I've been using the EZ-FLO fertilizer injector with our drip lines - works amazing. You use a lower concentrate of fertilizer that you would with weekly feedings (because it is a constant feed) and our blooms have never looked this good. We replace the concentrate once every 2-3 weeks or so. We've been using Jack's Professional 20-20-20 at about 250ppm nitrogen with every watering cycle. This works especially well with Calibrachoa (Superbells), Petunias and Geranium which are heavy feeders.
@michaelmase54987 жыл бұрын
But for annuals in the ground, I hit them weekly with MiracleGro Liquafeed because it injects the fertilizer into the hose very easily. I normally don't like using MiracleGro because of its high salt content. But annuals in the ground don't need as much fertilization as containers do, so I'm okay with it for in ground annuals and leave the high quality fertilizers to my containers.

I feel your pain as I have over 4 acres of garden that I don't fertilize regularly at all because it is just too hard specially as I am not on town water so we pump up water for the garden from a communal pond that is part of the estate in which I live. The water pressure is absolutely terrible. So I use chicken manure pellets spring, summer and autumn and leave it to nature. This year I am going to feed my roses with the same stuff but I am going to do it fortnightly as we get a lot of rain in summer.

In uk, we use something called fish, blood and bone to fertilise beds. It's mixed into the soil with composted manure, about 2 to 3 weeks before planting out and the nutrients are broken down by soil organisms to make it available for plants. So watering in fertiliser isn't really needed. I might top it up with a seaweed feed or Epsom salts and this takes care all my soil fertilisation needs. For hungry feeders like roses and dahlias, and around trees and perennials, the fish, blood and bone dose with manure goes on in autumn and spring in generous amounts. For pots, I do add loads of slow release fertiliser and the water well and consistently. I only ever liquid feed tomatoes and vegetable plants, if their production rate drops. Otherwise, thrifty is my byword. Fertiliser costs a lot of money here😊.

hi I think slow release fertilizer when you plant the plant next year sprinkle it around the plant and then you could just use your irrigation system or your hose to water. and another solution would be a water tank that your irrigation system hooks on to and then fertilize your water tank. it would need a pump to pump it all the way to the back of your property but once you figure out how much water you use to water your garden with the irrigation system you know how big of a tank you need. that way youvferyolize and do not need to haul all around your property with watering cans or tanks. it's kinda like our Dutch farms have next to the barn the used to have 2 tanks 1 for water and 1 for red diesel to fuel the tractors and generators. but yeah depending on how much water it costs per day to water the whole estate would determine the size of tank. and it might not be pretty (but you can always build someting pretty around it.... or like in Holland burrie the tank into the ground. good luck with your watering project that's the only part of your house and garden that im not jealous about 😂

I agree about the ollas and you can even cheat & use clay plant pots with the dish. Bury the pot below ground to the bottom of the 2 inch rim. Fill it with your water/fertilizer & water then put the clay pot "lid" on it. (what would originally have been the pot dish to catch water.) I'm going to do this in my herbal garden when we move.

How about using a small rain barrel and attach a hose with your regular sprayer attachment on the end. You might need a small boat oar to mix it but I think it might work. Maybe you could go with the ancient irrigation system of clay pots "ollas" buried underground? You could add the mix of fertilizer in those pots and when the plants need water, they'll pull the water out of those pots. I was thinking about implementing this system in my vegetable garden. How about the hydrangeas? Do they also need a liquid fertilizer? How do you fertilize them? Thank you!

No answer for the water wagon idea, although I've seen large commercial applicators, so maybe a scaled down version would work. But if I had as much to water as you do I would have watering cans at every spigot, pre-fill them all before watering and then move about the garden. But I'll bet you've already used that approach. 👍

For watering with a hose or drip there are a lot of "fertigation" systems that basically take up the fertilizer at the spigot instead of the hose end. It would be nice to see a comparison of some of the cheaper options. Keep up the good work.
@MNhockeydude352 жыл бұрын
The problem with the fertigation systems is that you need a double check valve plus the system which are very expensive and also decrease your pressure.

It seems like there are fertilizer systems that you can add to your drip system so everything gets watered and fed at the same time. Maybe they come with an on/off switch. Obviously, you'd have to adjust the fertilizer strength since it would be an everyday thing or not if there's a switch. It would work like that hose fertilizer sprayer except in your drip system. I wish I knew the name but I don't. You'll have to research it. Good Luck.

Or why not use the Versailles garden petunia planting as a test ;) I know it would be a ton of work, but nice to compare. don't fertilize one quarter, use your usual method on another, the hose-end feeder and in another normal watering just adding slow release fertilizer continuously throughout the season. I've also used water soluble powder fertilizers directly on the ground for trees and shrubs without any bad reaction, it just needs rain of normal watering to go into the ground, but don't know if it would be too much and burn the annuals roots.

The thing that ALWAYS ruins the hand pressurized pump for me is the end always gets plugged and it's such a pain to unplug. I've been through several. If they would make a better design and have it easier to unplug, maybe I would try again. Also, it gets so tiring keeping the pressure up and the pressure is not sufficient.The hose end sprayers are expensive, and are calibrated to one brand of fertilizer. We need one that would use liquid or dry, and directions that were understandable-like teaspoons and tablespoons instead of ounces. The easiest are the sprinkle-able grains that you spread and then water in. Do they not do as good a job?

Cut your grass when it is cool in the evening, or going to rain and water immediately. During high heat & dry leave it uncut. Weeds don't grow in thick grass. Neighbor has Tru Green spray 3 times a year and his 1/2 inch tall spot bare yard is Full of weeds. I have never sprayed or used weed killer.
