3-4 weeks ago, I decided to try this with my very poor-looking, leggy mint. I cut it ALL down, all the way to the ground. As of today, I have 5 small, beautiful, lush mint plants bursting through the soil in all corners of the pot. THANK YOU for saving my plant!!

@@rafaltruszkowski2751 yeah, it completely died down. It was good, but i was moving and put it on a bit too dark place in the new apartment so it died down. Then i cut it down and put on the window and watered daily. It's been a few weeks but it still hasn't regrown. Maybe it's because summer is over?

@@IcarianGreenWings if you're desperate, you can always dig into the soil with your 🖐️ and see what's up! Inspect the roots, see if any new shoots are coming up. If you are watering it daily, it might be too wet! You shouldn't water it until the top two inches of the soil are very dry. Also, make sure your pot has drainage. Otherwise your bottom of the pot will retain all that water, and the roots will rot in that underground pool.

I just pinch once the mint gets about 3-4 inches. That way it's always producing and bugs won't get to it as it's healthy. Also your plant may be root bound so it needs a bigger pot new dirt and it will be beautiful once again. Great vid ☺️

I’ve had my mint plant for over a year and I grew it from seeds so I must say I’m quite attached. Lately it hasn’t been doing well at all and I’ve tried everything I can think of. This is my last ditch attempt at saving it. I’ll add an update with how it goes.
@Gardeningat58N

Mint usually needs to be dormant once a year to grow well, cutting it back and leaving it somewhere cold for a few weeks should give it the dormancy it needs. Then bring it back to a warm location and it should grow well. Mint is usually dormant over winter so you might find it doesn't grow well again until spring.

I wish the same thing happened to my hair whenever I went to the barber's! Regarding mint, I planted a strawberry mint a few weeks ago in a piece of poor land and the plant is green in the top leaves but the lower leaves have a bronze tinge. I wonder if this is the normal state as it grows or whether I ought to water in the current warm weather please? I know mint is supposed to be "bomb proof" but I am not brave enough to find out if it is "me proof!"

If its died that quickly then it's probably due to lack of water. I would give it a good watering and see if it perks up, if it doesn't after two days then cut off all the dead and wait a couple of weeks to see if it regrows. Mint likes to be kept damp at all times, but don't have it sitting in water.

@Gardeningat58N
@Gardeningat58N 2 жыл бұрын
Mint usually goes dormant in cold weather so I would cut it back to the ground and allow it to become dormant over winter. If your growing it inside and it's warm enough you could try growing it over winter, but they don't usually do as well over winter with the low light levels. I would use a liquid feed that is high in nitrogen, a balanced liquid feed also works well. The high nitrogen levels encourage larger leaves.

@@Linda_Meyn If your in the UAE then it should grow over winter as well as summer. But as it's not a tropical plant it probably won't last more than two years in a warm climate as it needs a winter dormancy period at least once a year to grow well. @Gardeningat58N

You should be able to do the same to parsley, I've done it a few times, it works but not quite as well. Also parsley is biennial so after a year or two it will flower and die, but cutting all the leaves off can reduce the chance of this and you can sometimes get an extra year from the plant. Its got a thick tap root a bit like a small carrot, so it normally has a lot of energy stored ready to regrow its leaves.

Thank you for the information and the video. I appreciate it. Are you using a grow light? If yes, what kind, name, watts. Thank you.
@Gardeningat58N
@Gardeningat58N 7 жыл бұрын
I'm glad you found my video useful. Yes I'm using a small grow lamp, the one I'm using has a pure white light and fits in a usual desk lamp, the reason I use this kind is because the desk lamp concentrates the light in a small area, the white light is good for making time lapse videos as it doesn't have any colour tint, also the lamp is low power to save on my electric bills. I use a compact fluorescent bulb with a ses e14 fitment. The bulb is 20 watts and has a light temperature of 6500k which is simmilar to daylight. Here is a link to it www.amazon.co.uk/MiniSun-Energy-Saving-Daylight-Spiral/dp/B00CS38J82/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&qid=1505981628&sr=8-6&keywords=grow+bulb+cfl If you want to grow plants under grow lamps this bulb is ideal for individual small plants, and I have had great results with it as you can see in this video, but if you have large plants or a number of plants you would certainly need much more powerful bulbs with a higher lumen output.

Thanks! How often should you water though?

Mint loves water so make sure the compost is always damp, but don't let it sit soaking wet as it will rot the roots. How often you should water will depend on many different variables, such as light, temperature, pot size, time of year etc. But I usually water mine two or three times a week.

Did you save your mint leaves when you cut it down?
@Gardeningat58N

No, they were not very healthy leaves and so wouldn't have tasted very good.

What is the best environment for them? Mine is growing weak and leggy because I put it on a shade, but now I thought of putting it on direct sunlight. Can you give me some advice?

What fertilizer did you feed it?

I used a houseplant fertiliser as they tend to be high in nitrogen which encourages lots of lush leaves.

I need help with my apple mint, but first; The time lapse was phenomenal, including the silk worm or spider that created the web). Thanks so much for that. Now, what if you accidentally got some borax on a leaf and didn't see it until it killed most of the foliage. I rinsed the entire plant thoroughly, cut all the foliage off and see new growth on ONE side of the plant. This is an "apple mint" plant and I am in love and driven to save it. They're all sold out or I'd just buy anther one. Can't beat the flavor... favorite mint ever! Please help. Should I cut out the dead roots? Idk... I'm new at growing food this year. Have been happily working my tush off in the garden. :oD

How often do we water mint plant?
@Gardeningat58N
@Gardeningat58N 3 ай бұрын
Mint plants like a lot of water, make sure they are always damp and are never allowed to dry out. But make sure they are not soaking wet and sitting in water, otherwise they will rot. I can't tell you the frequency as it depends on lots of factors such as pot size, light levels and temperature, but I would expect every two to three days on average. On a sunny hot windowsill more like daily.
