Replacing the brake lining on my Sears Garden Tractor - this is the 2nd one I've done and it seems to work good and is pretty inexpensive. I found the lining at McMaster-Carr.com - www.mcmaster.c...

I just finished both of my tractors. I works fabulously. Total cost for both was around 30 dollars. The only thing I did different was, after gluing I wrapped the assembly around a 4 inch piece of pipe instead of using clamps. For those folks who say it's easier to just buy one, good luck with that. As of May 2023, it's no longer available. Well done, Sir. Great solution 😎

Thank you! That's a great idea about the pipe.

What I did was measure the diameter of the drum and cut a round wooden drum out of a piece of 2x8 ....glued the new pad to the band then put in my wooden drum and clamped the loose ends into my vise and let it set up. The problem I had was the old pad fell out ..... It looked like it was never glued in at all. This tractor was bought in the late 80's or very early 90's and I only use it for snow blowing now since I got a 60" zero turn. This tractor is like new but with the 44" deck and 4 acres of grass to cut .... it took me forever. I like the dual range and the 18 HP Kolher engine but last year the fuel pump started leaking gas into the engine oil. I just put on the second replacement fuel pump ..... I guess the Chinese division of Kohler figure Americans can afford to replace fuel pumps every 2 years. I also rebuilt the Carb and was going to get a new one from "I Save Tractors" because they send along an alternate choke lever that my tractor needs but I'm 71 yo and to buy it and let it set until I need it would just be ridicules since I probably would forget where I put it and just have to buy another one. I wish I I knew I was going to live this long after spending 44 years in a coal mine ..... Oh well ....can't live forever I guess.

Great work GP! Ya know that's one area of my tractors I neglect is the brakes and think I should give more attention. lol

I know what you mean - the first one I did was completely gone - it was just the metal band left.

gardeningpreacher, on lawn/garden tractors I tend to neglect the brakes, but once you don’t have them you start to like them. It’s scary when you can’t stop, one time I tried towing a trailer & went down hill in reverse going forward, so if it got out of control I could have at least some breaking action.

Accidentally found your video. I have a need for doing this. I had recently thought I wonder if it was possible to realign the band break..? And while reading up on Band Breaks I stumbled across your video. thank you for making this video and showing me how easy it is to reline a band break. Thank you for the link to where to order the material I will be attempting to realign the band brakes on a Power King 2414 tractor. Wish me luck but after watching what you did I think it will be no problem at all to accomplish the job. One very happy camper thank you. lol

Just buy a band on amazon. $40 & you’re done. May never need to replace again depending on usage. If that band lasted 40-50yrs it’ll be fine. Just replaced mine on my 73 st16. It was, so bad I could move forward with the brake pedal all the way down. It was freaking scary, I had one foot on the pedal, one hand on the wheel, & one hand on the shifter, ready to shift out of gear if I needed to. I was getting lots of grinding in the brakes & wasn’t safe. At one point I had a little brake action, but the little that was left wore out completely. I could see a shiny spot on the band when I got it off. Took a while, but now it has brakes. I did a predator swap, & took the muffler off so now it’s loud & I see flames coming out the exhaust, & plenty of power. My channel: MikeJD60

What is the "material?"
@gardeningpreacher2 жыл бұрын
It's a brake lining material from McMaster-Carr - one inch wide. They sell it by the foot and I usually buy a couple feet at a time.
